For Kit, and anyone else who is interested, this is how I paint instrument panels etc.

First the parts of the AZ instruction sheet that are relevant.









If the part you are wanting to paint has raised details, as in the case of the AZ MB-5s instrument psnel you are laughing.

First you paint the part in it's base colour.
When that is dry you dry brush over the raised details.
Dry brushing is a technique learned from the figure modelling fraternity.
What you have to do is get the required colour on the brush, then wipe it of until the brush is almost totally dry.
Then you drift this lightly over the raised detail of the part you are painting.
After that you paint in the colour bits with a tiny little brush.

That's superb Jim, thanks so much. 

There's no raised detail in the Skybirds cockpit, despite the instructions saying that there is, and the instruments on the panel are just dents, so trying to outline them is almost impossible, especially when it's glued in place.

I may be able to post my somewhat less good results tomorrow.

When dry brushing one of the tricks I was told back when I was figure painting was that it works better when you dry brush using enamels. That was a long time ago however and paint technology has changed a lot.

What do you think the MB-5 would have been called in RAF service?

Remember this is a big, powerful, fighting beast.

Thanks for any ideas, but please remember it/they may not get used.

I already have names for the next two models, but neither of them are destined to be RAF.

Here's a pic of the moldy oldy from my stash.


Makes any other kit look good! No decals, no prop blades, no landing gear. But it was $2.65 in 1985.

You can make it into a very nice looking model kerick, here's my Airframe MB5, albeit with a lot of Aeroclub accessories

Don't use Mustang parts at all, the closest u/c you can use is actually from a P-47 for the main gear and a F6F Hellcat for the tail wheel. The real one used Tempest main wheels so use those and the prop diameter and shape were as a Shackleton' although it does have a longer and more pointy spinner
