Soviet Coastal Monitor Vyborg

So I got this idea a few months ago, but the main build of the October Revolution was eating up LOTS of time, and then I got distracted by another project acting like a bright shiny penny, so I was going to bag this one entirely. Then we got the extension. And I think I can whip this out in 2 weeks.

So here we go.

The Basics: The Vainamoinen was given to the Soviets as war reparations. It was renamed Vyborg and served in the Baltic Fleet for 6 years, she was then modernized in the 50's, and served until 1958. In the setting, she is then put in ready active status, and sits around doing not much until the late 70's. As rumors of massive build-ups in the US Navy being to circulate, they bring back the Vyborg as a small test case for what they want to do in a much bigger scale with the October Revolution. Due to the austere refit, she is back in service with the Baltic Fleet by 1981, and she serves with distinction until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1995.

The ship is one of the few kept relatively active due to being smaller in terms of replacement needs and crewing, and serves another 10 years in the Russian Navy, before being sent back to Finland as an all but broken husk. Once there, she is refurbished as a museum and continues in that capacity today.

Pictures!

This is where we started:

And this is where we are after tonight:

Interesting, looking forward to seeing her built

Day two. I was starting the ink when I realized the paint wasn't completely dry, so that ended out the work for now.

Changed the secondaries to include 2xZSU-23-4 mounts, 2xAK630 CIWS, a new fire control radar where the old optical used to be on the aft tower, and eventually, some SSMs cuz why not.  ;)

I do love the way you upgrade these old ships

Talking of old ships. Have you seen that the Finn's have just put an electricaly powered ferry into service which started off as a coal fired on in 1902 (or there abouts) was latter converted to oil fired and has now gone all electric. Still poodles along at 1.5 knts or so though

This caught me by surprise... apparently even the BBC has ran a story of it, while I haven't seen any headlines in the local press ;D

It started off as wood-fired in 1903 though ;)

Dang, that's cool! The bit about engine redundancy was cool.

Oh yeah, day three.

Most of the major stuff is now in place, and even painted!

We have the SSMs in place, the Zilkas are seated, and the main 12" turrets are in place. I still need to finish up the mast, but this little sucker is zipping along (Of course, I probably just cursed myself with that).

Don't forget Drum Tit for the Darlek's  ;D (or optical sights as the cheaper option )

Looking good, you could do with the Skywave LCT  for the rocket version set to do as Stalin's organs  ;)

Nice paint job on the deck planking BTW

No, totally meant to go with the little searchlight looking things. I can probably squeeze one in on either side of the bridge to get both sides.

Thanks for the reminder, I'd totally forgotten those.

Day Four: Added CIWS directors, aerials on main mast, lots more painting; mainly details and inking. Hopefully tonight is final paint details, then tomorrow is flat top coat, and done!

Ah yes I should of twigged that (no pun intended) given Finland's abundant forests. It was in my daily paper and I was going from memory.

As for the build, it gets better and better

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.
