Greg, really don't think you are seeing Iranian aircraft in your area and since they are the only ones who make them...

You need to sneak down to the local base and try getting us a pic.

Course, if Iran does have aircraft operating out of the Arizona desert, that opens a whole new world of questions.

difficult would it actually be for the DoD, USAF and N-G to whip up a conversion in order to
get an idea of the Iranian machine's capabilities?

My guess is not very.

It's been over six months since I have seen twin tailed F-5's flying out of Williams AFB, but they are there and gone in a second or two...no time to rush for the camera. The military portion of the airfield is off limits, the only things you can see from the fence are the C-5's and B-52's.

Everyone kept on telling me that I wasn't seeing them. Darn it, I know what a bloody F-5/20 looks like!  The design was leased from Northrop by the Iranians...they didn't design it, so why couldn't we have built some too, for 'aggressor' training?

My guess is not very.

Perhaps, but i don't think the USAF would go through the hassle to convert it for a real aircraft. They could find it's capabilities by computers. Afterall, it is merely an upgrade, not a new aircraft, and some sources say that much of the upgrade is of the non-visible type

Here's a thought: Boeing or someone may have dusted off the YF-17 prototypes for flight testing of some sort.  The original Hornet did look a bit more like the F-5 than later marks.
