Indeed fascinating, and if you go through the entire site, there's stuff about the Overland Train project, abandoned WIG machinery, tank graveyards of the middle east and africa... and a really funky Bulgarian monument shaped like a flying saucer.

Cool link!
These abandoned structures, especially monuments or factories, have a rather morbid charm.

Yeah, that one's pretty creepy. Just what was it with the Soviets that they felt the need to construct concrete monuments at every other crossroads?

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

Yes I have been right the way through it, and there is some very fascinating stuff there that is for sure. The photos of Chernobyl are very creepy.

It wasn't much different from the west, really. Plenty of monuments in Denmark. The US is full of them. Lots in the UK as well. Main difference is that

a) funding to complete and/or maintain them ran out in 1989-1991

b) they are more interesting because they are abandoned

I think the Liberty Statue and the Eiffel tower would have been abandoned in a similar way if the west had collapsed.

puddingwrestler

Well, the Eifel tower was actually meant to be a temporary structure for the great exhibition...
