What's a JMZ? Maybe it's like the DMZ, i.e. a Joyless Modelling Zone, where JMNs are allowed to roam free? 

Anyway, I've got a picture like that (but I'm not scanning it at this time of night). it's a shot down the deck of a US carrier with pretty much all it's A-7s lined up, and the thing I notice is that the nose & anti-glare panel on every one is different. Painted radome, bare fibreglass radome, short anti-glare panel, long anti-glare panel, no anti-glare panel, hard edge, soft edge: it's the picture that made me realise that an awful lot of the modelling "accuracy" obsession is bunk....

Patchy!  I've noticed quite a lot of Tonkas like that recentley, mostly due to long excursions in Afghanistan.  The basic airframe is old & dirty, but lots of bits need replacing at different intervals.  I've been looking at pics of the Lightning fleet recentley & they looked similar close to retirement, old faded paintwork that nobody was bothering to touch up because retirement was imminent.  If you paint them like that though, you always get someone piping up that it's not representative of a real aircraft.  Well, yes it is!

I have the old Verlinden "lock-on" book on the F-15.  On it there is a 2 page spread with pics of a CR Eagle taxying out.  4 pics taken on the same day by the same photographer using the same camera and probably the same film.  4 different shades of grey.

I also got my Model Art profile on the F-2 today, one bit has 4 pics of the centreline drop tank (off different planes).  All 4 are different shades of blue.

Joyless Modelling Zealot - An alternative to the much (over?) used JMN. Just my opinion but I like to keep the word 'Nazi' separate. We've had the discussion here before and there are a number of opinions, mine is simply that if the word 'Nazi' is used too frequently then there is a danger that it may devalue the original. Others disagree, and that's fine, there's plenty of room for all opinions here.

Nev, Thanks for the link, I ordered the book, it's on back-order and according to the eMail I just got from HLJ should be with me in no-longer than six-weeks. Of course that means I wont start the F-2B till it arrives, so will have to find something to replace it...... Maybe something for the Nats

Choose any grey you want and you'll be golden fine! 






*Maybe we could shorten "boring grey jet" to BGJ.

** Fer the rec'rd, I don't think the F-16 is boring. Then again, I probably should say so, with 20+ in the stash. Same goes for any grey jet - F-14s (30+), F-15s (10+) and F/A-18s (40+).

Fair enough - I always thought that the alternative for JMN was Joyless Modelling Numpty for anyone who had a problem with "Nazi".

Do the MSG panels suggest a change in camouflage for RAF aircraft, i.e. at their next major service, will they be sporting all over MSG?  If so, I guess this means that over the last fifteen years or so RAF front line aircraft will have worn just about every shade of grey in the inventory.

Also, is it a trick of the light or does the Tonka in Ian's last post still have a DG/DSG tank?
