Hey Guys, i was just surfing Google when a Question came to me:did the ADF Ever use the UH-1 Huey for Army Service?  been tempted to purchase the Huey Hog by Monogram & Thought i'd ask. Hope i'm not sounding like a Nutter for asking. Thanks for looking. Dan

The RAAF and RAN operated the UH-1 for most of it's service with the ADF.   For the RAAF history, I'd recommend here:  http://www.airforce.gov.au/raafmuseum/research/aircraft/series3/A2.htm.

For the RAN (has some pictures but no history): - http://www.adf-gallery.com.au/gallery/Iroquois

Here for history of RAN Helicopter Flight SVN: - http://www.navy.gov.au/Fleet_Air_Arm_Museum_Display_-_RAN_Helicopter_Flight_Vietnam

Here for RAAF/Army operation: - http://www.adf-serials.com/3a2.shtml

Please stop wasting members time, if you had attempted to try searching Google for "UH-1 Huey ADF" you would have had numerous results indictaing active use by all elements of the Austrailian Armed Forces of the Huey. Some of the guys here probably have had some interesting experiences with said aircraft during their time in service.

If you wanted to know further details of ADF Huey use then ask but please don't pretend to use google to phrase your question, when a simple google search plainly illustrates that you haven't bothered and are relying on other member to do your research for you.

Its OK.  I'm sure he'll try harder next time.  ;)

Flew about half a dozen times in Iroquois over the years.

One exercise was the year after one had hit a ridge behind the main camp and crashed and burnt.  Silly buggers had been carrying ammunition, POL and personnel.  A big naughty (you can carry any two but never three together).  They built a simple cairn on top of the ridge which was nearly impossible to get to by chopper and held a service up there.  Strange seeing two choppers perched on the ridge seemingly to almost topple off, while the service was conducted.    They took us up there later on "familiarisation" flights to show us the crash site.  You could see where the chopper just missed the top of the ridge by about 10 feet and then slid down about another 20 feet and burnt.  They'd recovered the wreckage just after it had happened but the big patch of burn ground was quite sobering.

Of the different choppers I've flown in, I have to admit the Iroquois is my favourite.   Nice and steady and seemed to be built like the proverbial brick Dunny.   Didn't vibrate all over the place like the Chinook and didn't seem to be built of tissue paper like the Kiowa.  Blackhawk was similar but I hated the exit towards the tail rotor "feature" of that one.

I loved my flights in UH-1s, usually B models that were used as Crash Rescue a/c.  Great fun hooting around the bush and dropping into clearings in seconds.  Most of the pilots were ex-Vietnam so quite crazy when it came to handling.
