This is the only what-if project I found...
It's an RC boat, about 50 cm long with a 1:72 Harrier on the rear deck.
I'll put some more photos on my website in a while (if they're worth bothering, anyway. Most of the photos look crappy thanks to the awful lighting in the museum.

Hey....that dude with the Harrier boat stole my idea !

Lemme at 'im !

But it sure is pretty ! That's one of those models that you'd love to get your hands on, and detail it all up with rails and ladders and doors.......next time you go, try folding it under your coat and walking out the door !

Did you get any other pics of the other big boats around it ?

Cheers !

Yeah, I have some more pictures. There's one guy who had a 1:72 model of HMS Hermes, made quite a few photos of that one. That's the one I really wanted to smuggle out, but a. it didn't fit under my coat (hell, it wouldn't have fit in my car), and b. the owner was bigger than me.
I'll put the photos up in a day or two. The large ship in the background of this photo is USS Leahy. Not finished unfortunately, but it looked promising. Most of the ships were a bit older (e.g. there were a number of Dutch Navy ships ca. 1950s-60s), a bit earlier than the period I'm interested in so I didn't make too many photos of those.

I've put up some photos here:
NMM gallery
I'll add some more when I have time.

That Hermes is a What If project in and of itself.  Look at the air group.  There are RAF Harrier GR.3s, Sea Harrier FA2, and Sea King, Seahawk and Lynx helos.  Oh and a Chinook.

Jesus Harry Christ!  :o

That Hermes is just unbelievable!

Oh my....          Oh that Hermes is simply gorgeous...

Wow Hobbes.....that's awe inspiring ! I could play all day with that sucker ! Take her down to the beach, do a few assaults ! Good way to pick up the babes !

Love the airgroup as well.........Mmmm Harriers !

That kid is treading awfully close to her, tho......... :dum:

Can't wait to see some more !

Cheers !

That's amazing - any idea how long it took the guy to make ?

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Hobbes

I've added some more photos to the gallery. I'll see if I can get more information on that HMS Hermes model.

Hobbes

Another addition to the gallery (some detail shots of the Hermes). I spoke to the owner: he's been working on it for ten years now, and it still isn't finished. For one thing, the starboard side isn't done because he can't find drawings or pictures of it. The Sea Dart launcher is also not done yet.
The boat can be split in two for storage. It's built to be radio controlled, motors, receiver etc. are installed, but the owner is reluctant to actually run it (with all the stuff on deck it's become fairly fragile...)

Captain Canada

Holy Mackerov....that's blooody awesome !

I feel like a kid in the candy store, looking at all those pics ! What a blast it would be, up to your armpits in water, launching Sea Kings and SHARs on a beach assault !

A kid could play all day !

Thanks alot, Hobbes !

Also nice to see that Imperial Canuckistan tiger bird !

And are those wee Fireflys and Sea Furys in 350th scale ?

I think so, yes. That's a model of Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman (R81, ex- HMS Venerable, later 25 de Mayo).

QuoteFor one thing, the starboard side isn't done because he can't find drawings or pictures of it. The Sea Dart launcher is also not done yet.

The Sea Cat launcher is avaiable in 1/72 scale (I saw one on a model display at Elsecar yesterday). 1/72 Ship Fittings B-16 is the Launcher and B-28 is the Director.

As for details of the starboard side there should be some available in various books and musuems (She's still in service in India BTW 0 so the Indian Navy should have some photos if asked)

Cheers

Thanks, but I forgot to ask the owner for his mail address so I've no way of getting that info to him.
