This is really cool, Greg! I'm really impressed with how you're able to build such a variety of subjects so masterfully.
Am I the only one that often gets inspiration for camo schemes from dinosaur/reptile models?

Looks like that solves the " I can't reach him. Big head, little arms!" quandry. ;) Looking forward to your progress. :)

Make him wear an Edmonton Oilers jersey and have him ripping a scale Calgary Flames jersey to shreds! Have a miniature case of Labatts Blue ™ nearby on the diorama base, too.
If she drank to much, she'd be....well, never mind.

Cutting and chopping ? Looks like you've smashed the poor girl !
:o
This kit looks like a vinyl kit in its "poured" style configuration.
It is hard, injection-molded plastic though, right?
Yes, but the styrene is very, very soft, and doesn't accept CA glue very well.
the Lindberg dino kits in their main 'Jurassic park' range are all pretty good for chopping, iv made a few of the T.rex kits in my time, repositioning the heads and extending the tail, etc.
its definately got a meaner look than for eg. the dainty Tamiya rex and matches the movie artwork really well too
the 'raptor' kit needs a tad more to make it into something more presentable, as it is its head is more Deionychus than Velociraptor and its pose is pretty much frankenstien (can be made to look pretty neat as a sortv scifi subject tho, in my case reaching over to touch a slab of black acrylic...lol)
the 'spitter' aka. Diliphosaur, again can be made into something interesting with just a lil work (lose the frill and head crests to make a small Allosaur!!?)
another source of some neat dino modells is the local natural world store, cheapo toy store or museum, all of which sometimes having 'toys' suitable for conversion into something a lil more 'realistic'
ill see if i can dig out some snaps of my smaller dino models over the past few years (most of my more recent ones being merely maquettes for full scale examples and not too detailed!)
looking forward to seeing it finished, cheers, Joe
oh, just a snippet...tot teddy bear eyes fit neatly into hollowed sockets of the kit pretty well...look out for the small transparent ones with black pupils...
Great tip about the eyes! Thanks! I converted the Lindberg Raptor to a Dryptosaurus nasutus last year, you are correct the kit is waaaay too heavy for a Velociraptor:

I once saw an article years back, where the moddeler was building the Tamiya dinosuars. He used eyes he bought from a Taxidermy supplier, they're not
that expensive (at least in the sizes you need for a model) & have the advantages of coming in several sizes & species so you can get the exact look you want. They're realtively easy to get hold of these days too with that Inter-web thingmybob.
Have a look at this article:

Slightly OT, does anyone know of monkey, ape or human ancestor kits? Or any prehistoric creature kits of any kind?
.. heres a 1/1 scale 'Eotyrannus' i put together for Isle of Wight 'Dinosaur Isle' museum ... lightweight steel skeletal structure, sculpted polystyrene foam body form, latex moulded skin covering, acrylic paint finish followed by colour washes and satin laquer (the eyes were cast in clear urethane resin, backpainted, the teeth and claws in a transluscent form of the same)

Aurora made cave men figures(Neanderthals and Cro Magnon types) way back when and occaisionaly see them on Ebah or give Comet Miniatures a call. He often has old stuff
Revell has done a Gorilla I think as an endangered species range and I seem to remember a small monkey from either them or Monogram
Greg, good thinking using the file, looks just right.
Looking good Greg!
Thanks all ! We have decided to name her "Sheila"...a tribute to both the Aussie friends and the Canuckians.
You can see how just moving the head a bit, and the tail, make it look like she is running fairly fast after something:

This is ridiculously good, Greg. Is the reshaping of puttied joint sections as difficult as I think it would be?
Dude...it is a walk in the park compared to putty jobs on a plane...these dino kits are a breeze!

Jeez, thanks all...I am glad that you like it so much. Dino kits are just too much fun to NOT build ! Highly recommended!

Look, its been eating masking tape!
looking good...what scheme dyu envisage for the ol' girl ?
i recall a chap over in Australia (Andrew Parker?) doing some work on 'palaeochromatophores' where he had some luck isolating colour from fossil fishes, last i heard he was intending to check mummified skin samples of Carnotaurus from S.America, but not checked recently for any further updates!
my fav scheme for a large carnosaur has always been a really dark underbelly graduating to a light buff colour on its uppers, looks menacing and definately different from the usual pale belly schemes, i always tried out possible schemes upon my neices toy dinos first, or better stil got them to come up with the schemes which id then translate onto my models! (explains why theres an orange and yellow Dimetrodon and a pink Troodon in a UK. museum...lol)
His work is the stuff that inspired the colour changing Carnotaurus's of Jurassic Park 2 (the book, not that film)...there does seem to be some basis looking at the cellular structure of the skin for this to have been possible. (Think of a ten foot tall chameleon with sharp teeth and a bad attitude!)
The only reason to have a pale belly would be for protection while swimming, from water predators looking up, or for the ability to spot infection ...most predators do have pale bellies, but those that exist today are far smaller than these ancient archosaurs...
I am going to be doing an "early spring" diorama, so there will be a little bit of snow on the ground...probably going to base her in light tan and a forest green, since Albertosaurs would have been great ambush hunters, bursting from the coniferous forest to savage travelling herds.
If its a female, more subdued colors would probably make sense. Modern birds are like that, females more subdued in coloration than males. That model is certainly eons ahead of the tail-draggers I built as a kid many moons ago. Beautiful work!
similar in 1-1 scale..all 47ft long of her...
during build...
on location...
due to its size thats what made me think of not having a pale coloured belly...itd be pretty visible amongst the foliage... (this beastie, 'Millie', was finished in an overall bronze colour resin tho so as to emulate a sculpture)
'Leelu' a Coelophysis...a quick and dirty model this time...wooden former, polyfoam bulk, epoxy putty, latex skin and resin sealant, the finished piece was painted up this time like a sortv antelope, reddish brown, black patches, pale belly, with the additional flourish of a flourescent yellow neck and nasal panels ...
'Icthy' epoxy resin over a wood and wire framework covered in tissue matting ... 1 week turnaround time ...
'Iggy' under construction, a big block of polyfoam...
.. and on site with the prev shown 'Eotyrannus' ...
Rarely have I had a thread hijacked in such a wonderful way ! Spectacular work, the positioning of the archosaurs is flawless, as is the finish...more, more !

Hi there
Just a small point but its quite unusual to find the landscape so dry and cracked next to water.
I know you said the dio` was early spring and it is possible for the cold to crack the ground, but if it`s that cold would reptiles be active?
Mind you I`m probly jumping the gun and you intend to cover these bits with turf etc.
Sorry going back into the cupboard.
PS what do you use for water?
Yep, the "cracked" effect was actually unintentional, and gets covered over...will keep it in mind for future projects, though. I mixed two uncompatible powders together, Fix All and Thinset, and it took daaaaays to dry, hence the cracking.
Archosaurs really weren't reptiles (at least, that is the current pattern of thought), were warm blooded like birds are, and hunted year round, even in the snow, the the area they frequented would only have been freezing for limited times of the year, and snowfall would have been short lived.
In this case, I used Enviro-Tech Lite resin for the water...it smells a bit, but not as bad as some other resins, and costs about 17 bucks per pint...just a little more than hot setting resin (fiberglass resin). If you remember the Arado diorama, I used hot resin on that one, and damn near melted the floats of the plane!
Glad you all like the fish...it's those little things that make the difference.
QuoteGlad you all like the fish...it's those little things that make the difference.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You are a remarkable artist. This is awe inspiring and just plain fun to look at. In other words, yer the MAN! :salute:

So, this is how it's going to be, eh, Greg? Build a model, get a trophy?
Cool: For every model display shelf you fill, you're going to need an equivalent shelf just for all the resulting prizes/trophies!

Two JMN's talking about how the hips were too wide for an Tyrannosaurus...someone else pointed out that it clearly read "Albertosaurus", and was supposed to be a mature female, per the comments section on the model tag.
I didn't have to say a word.
One of the IPMS photographer's paid me a nice compliment, He said in all of his years taking pics of contest dino models, this was his all time favourite. I was blown away, and speechless.
When I was down in Galveston with my family, we went to Moody Gardens and they had a aminatronic dino exhibit. When I saw these big dinos, I immediately thought of you Greg. I think you could get a job painting these bad boys! B)
