Title: Royal Canadian Navy Shar
Post by: F-32 on August 02, 2007, 12:57:23 AM
After the 1982 Falklands War and the success of the Sea Harrier and VSTOL Carriers in sea conditions that would have rendered normal carriers unusable, a number of different nations decided to opt for this combo.

The first was Canada who purchased two new carriers (Toronto & Thunder Bay) each with a single squadron of FRS.1's with two land based training and reserve squadrons.

Entering service in 1987 the Canadian Sea Harrier differed from the RN example by not having the prominent pitot tube.  The reason for this is rumoured to be that when the Canadia delegation first visited the UK to view the Harrier it was one of the pilots birthdays.

A party was held that evening at Dunsfold and when the ground crew went out to prepare the SHAR for another days flying they found that 25 empty cans of Molson had been speared onto the tube!

The model is 1/72 from Italeri, the scheme was inspired by some of the great profiles on this site, and the decals were provided by Toad (thanks Toad!)
