Title: Spru-can on the lam
Post by: proditor on January 11, 2008, 08:07:12 AM
Well, it's started and then some.

Pics to follow, but so far; flight deck cut, bridge and hanger built, one smokestack completed, decals purchased.

I also bought really small helicopters...so small I'm not sure I can paint them.    :o

It was a bad esoteric pun?   ;D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugitive

That was what I intended, but I only went with it because it sort of rhymed.

It's going to be a photo-finish.  If the decals arrive tomorrow, I might pull it off and have a completed model.

If not, I'll have a nice white ship.   ;D

I appreciate that, but I just checked and the vendor hasn't even charged my card for my decals yet.  I'm a little frustrated with that, but it's my own fault for not ordering them months ago.

Regardless, I got a ton done today, so here are the final mockups.  ;D

I love how you did the port sponson.  It doesn't look it, but did you flare out the bow for that full on carrier look (ie, not the pointed bow of a Spru-can, rather the broad bow of a flat-top)?

Ok... a Ships GB sometime this year, anyone?

I should have taken a picture of the bow, cuz I got sneaky and I'm rather proud of it.

I took the raised bow of a Ticonderoga, and mated that to the flight deck.  So you get the broader support, but still keep those really speedboat-like lines.  It reminded me of the Saratoga and the Lexington, and well, those were my favorite carriers asthetically, so it made me happy.  ;)

The sponson was actually fun.  I was looking at the DoD sketch, and then our profiles, and I realized we all transposed the sponson.  And you really NEED it for the the uptakes and the gun, so putting it back was a given for me at least.  Tehn, I again got tricky and did the bulk work in sheet plastic, mating it to the hull with sculpting putty suitably shaped and then sanded.

I'll keep checking the mail and my e-mail to see when the decals come in, and once they do, I'll make sure to post some finished pics.

On a side note, I really wish I knew how to cast, as I really wish I had a few more of the two main structures.  Re-building the hanger and the forward stacks is going to be a PITA if I decide to make another one of these.  Heck, I'd probably cast the hull too just so I don't have to PSR like a mad-man again.

Ah well, best laid plans of mice and all that.  :D
