When the Meteor and the Tiffie are finished this week, I'll be taking a break from building for the RAF 100 theme for a few weeks to make a start on this:-
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi32.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd30%2FJackson001%2FWhat%2520If%2520Models%2F262%2F262NationalistItaly1.jpg&hash=2a3316dfe34d0072d34e359330f7b7fdda3a76fe)
Spent quite a lot of time with our Richard coming-up with camo schemes for Nationalist Spanish & Italian 262's last year. It may not be exactly this scheme when it's finished, there's a couple of others I'm very tempted to use, but each scheme IS accurate and well documented on other airframes. I wrote a whole 'thesis sized' essay for the 262 in Spain & Italy and their participation in the second Desert War (1944-48) some of which Iposted here on the Alternative History page.
Anyhoos, I'll be using this:-
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi32.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd30%2FJackson001%2FWhat%2520If%2520Models%2F262%2FBox2.jpg&hash=7fe20e7328b5db55bda0d093a694803ae05a6861)
As my 'raw material' and will probably be making a start sometime in the next two weeks or so. As ever when I get-around to remembering to post-up progress shots, I'm happy to take all pot-shots, criticisms and questions.
Ian
YES!! YES!!
*stands on sidelines cheering*
Gorgeous subject and I have total faith in your ability to pull it off Ian
I have a few of those kits in my stash and will be watching this build with great interest to see how well this Tamiya kit goes together.

I know I said that I was taking a break to finish some Sci-Fi builds and some commission builds but I need to take a break from my break.
So I'm doing this one baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems I'm not the only one doing a Gekko inspired build ;D
Look forward to your build!

Not a 'shake and bake' build by any means and at this point, the wings are only pushed into place. left the gun cover off for now, as it's easier to install the nose gear, also I wanted to add a lot more nose weight.
Ian
Get it done while you can............................no time when the new 1:1 rugrat arrives. :drink:
That Gekko blokes got a lot to answer for.
Some self explanatory progress:
Construction finished - I've left-off the intake fronts as they are going to be white and the rudder..... because I forgot it !

Another five minutes of spraying (and twenty minutes cleaning-up !), here's what I have:-

As you can see the white panels on the upper and lower wings are different sizes, just to add interest and I believe that some of the 110's had this stile earlier in the war. Also very early on decided NOT to have the white wing tips follow the panel line, looks more 'aggressive' with them at 90deg to the C/L, doncha think ?
Hopefully, tomorrow, I can get the Grigio Mimetico (Bluey Grey !) on the underside.
Ian
I really love the way you have done your preshading. You are a great teacher

Nice camo. You're masking worked great.

I thought you'd put the grey paint on a bit thick, then realised it was blutack. :banghead:
Looks super.
Is it straight from the box apart from the scheme? Why not put it into the nationals Competition?
I've a SFTB Spitfire in Biggles colours going in, and probably a Crusader Hurricane too.

Hey Lance, the only 'special preparation' I made was to brush-paint two coats of Klear/Future over the whole topside and left it o'night before adding the Blu-Tack.
Sisko - "I bet your heart was racing as you pulled the masking off!"
H*ll yes !

B*gger !
Ever had one of those days ?... 'course you have. Picture the scene, scorching hot afternoon - well at least it was in sunny Merseyside - Mrs & Baby Hunter-Gatherer (now renamed Toddler-Gatherer), have gone out to the local park, all my chores are done and I'm standing in front of my 'Schwalbe' with airbrush clutched eagerly in my paw......
Time to apply the final matt varnish coat (Humbrol MattCote). Ten mins later all done. Twenty mins later, it's still shiny, another ten mins, still no change, but the varnish is dry. OK, no biggie, try again with a different bottle...... same performance/result. An hour later - after spraying some Olive Drab at a 'real world' model, and cleaning-up, one more try with a third bottle of MattCote.
Yep you guessed it - still shiny :banghead:
I'm guessing it's something to do with pigment separation & too much thinning, but could you believe the same thing happenting three times..... Ahhh well, off to the LHS on Thursday to re-stock.
B*gger !
Ian
Ian,
My last model that I finished (Bf 109G-10) I used Humbrol MattCote on it and also had the same sort of trouble with it being too shiny, after a couple of times of re-spraying it did not get much better so I tried using Mr. Super Clear Flat (from a spray can) and it worked quite well.
I prefer using the Humbrol flat clear but the last bottle of the stuff I bought does not work quite as well as it once did so I won't be buying any more of it.

Oil wash - heavily thinned raw umber into all panel lines to give the whole a 'sepia' tone. The recesses for the control surfaces including the leading edge slats were given a wash of Paynes Grey to emphasise the shadow effect.
Oil wash on:-

Still not matted down, so thought I'd post these shots in lieu. Hopefully I can get this finished over the next week. In the meantime it's on to assembling the Tamiya Marder APC for the GB.

Is the old T-shirt soaked in any solvent?
Tiny, and I do mean tiny amount of regular thinners. Once a patch of t-shirt gets too dirty, move on to another, otherwise you just end-up smearing/mixing the oil tones. The key is to leave the wash to settle (minimum) overnight.
Ian
WOW and BEAUTY what a lesson   Such an excellent learning experience. I will now go try to redo my last efforts..... or take up fence building ,knitting seems too complex
Well, there ya go, Ian: setting up a whole new class of excellence on the ol' What If site!
PS: By far, the finest matte clear I've ever used is Testors Acryl Flat Clear. Thinned just a touch with tapwater and blasted at 45 PSI from a distance.
Will take the shine off of anything and I don't think it cares what kind of enamel, paint, lacquer is underneath, either.
Ian, this is truly magnificent!
Barry is right, Testors Model Master Acryl flat clear is good stuff!
Your a very brave man Ian!
Great job on a very difficult camouflage scheme!
Richard.
It's Back !
No pics yet, because, (and in no particular order):-
1: I only matted it down yesterday when ALL the children and Mama-Gatherer were sleeping (Shhhhh don't tell 'em)
2: With three minutes to go before I HAD to leave for work this evening, I was still struggling with (VERY) unco-operative lycra thread, an awkward model and some Cyano glue !
3: It's 0200 here and I'm at work !
4: I'm sure that after all this time you lot won't mind waiting till it's completely finished. I hate rushing a model that I've invested so much time and effort in, just to meet some self-imposed deadline. I've done it before and it's a sure-fire way to scr*w the project-up for absolutely no reason !
Pics to come..... patience my friends, patience.
Ian
Woohoo it lives!!!

mmmmmmmmmmmm.......................................havent you got some sailors to look after??

Erm, Barry...... It's NOT in the GB, it was started waaaayyyy before, as a simple tribute to Richards' skills and efforts, the MiG and the Marder are for the GB ! - Everybody thanks so much for the very kind comments, as ever they inspire me on to the next project...... Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.
