After reading SSgt Baloo's profile thread, I thought I'd share this. I started it a month or so ago. It's been on the back burner as I've been working on other models & GB's.
SSgt Baloo's thread: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,22060.0.html
Here are the kits parts. This is a Tamiya 1/72 P-51D. Nice kit. The fuel tanks are going to become the engine pods.

Like, SSgt Baloo, I decided to make it tricyle gear instead of a taildragger. So here I've cut out the main wheel well and will move it aft.

I post more updates as I progress on this one.
Ed
Cool to see someone doing this in 1:72 (I've played around with moving Mustang wheel wells on few projects but never would have attempted it in 1:72!). Keep it coming, Ed!
;D Great project! Where will you take the jets from? Meteor or else?
Cool ! Is it going to be a late war USAAF '46 type ? Love the profiles.
@ Ed S: Did you ever finish it? I can draw but I can't whif in 3-d so I'm anxious to see how this turns out.
Not finished yet. It got sidetracked when I spend all my modeling time doing all the group builds this spring. I'm hoping to get back on it soon.

Yes! (Twin clapping hands...)
Yes, I have made some progress on this one.
Here it is with the basic assembly. Wings and fuselage glued up.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi213.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc250%2Fesveum%2F100_5633.jpg&hash=911ec831e70a98016fa239f407767ec1c3242675)
And here is the underside. The wheel wells have been moved aft. Now it's time for the epoxy putty and start the PSR.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi213.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc250%2Fesveum%2F100_5631.jpg&hash=85019f537186b076ad6a0ff32af9b508a6f7c55b)
And finally, a close up of the cockpit area.

Good!
Nice to see her back on the bench.....looking good !
Here's the current progress. The PSR on the nose and bottom is well underway. The engine pods (modified F-4 Phantom external tanks) are in place.
Here's the underside. You can see the new nose and the putty around the wheel wells to blend into the underside.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi213.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc250%2Fesveum%2F100_5647.jpg&hash=fa50962f23ab1f636dad9b223ec97a93ff5ef04f)
Here's a nose on shot. You can see the engine compressor section inside the intakes. They are from the spares box.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi213.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc250%2Fesveum%2F100_5644.jpg&hash=b66f429d25a0eefb665a0c49b2e5863cc99d8fa2)
And here's the topside. You can see the new nose shape clearly.

Looks Great So Far!!!!!!!!!! will you do a Paint Scheme or will it be NMF????????? this is looking super Cool
Looks almost Me-262ish, maybe a olive drab finish, or some P-47 style camo?
Wow this baby is nice! I agree, I thought 262.
Looking forward to seeing her completed Ed, top work so far! :)
I'd do it in a scheme similar to the early XP-59s:

Regards,

Alright, I have to agree with the crowd - very Me-262 looking. The only way to treat that baby though is to give her the real colours that would stand her out against the Luftwffe - NMF!
I'm inclined to go with NMF. But that means a lot more work getting the surface smooth and shiney...
Ed
I seem to have missed this, very nice ;D ;D and i agree does look like a 262 . If your going NMF how about invasion stripes as an identification means ?
Congratulations, Ed
The straight wings and jet pods is more reminiscent of a He-280 than a 262. That's not a bad thing, IMHO---I really like the He-280 and it SHOULD HAVE BEEN the Luftwaffe's first jet fighter. The 262 was more advanced. So what I would like to see is the JetStang up against the He-280 and then the P-80 up against the 262!

I suppose if one wants to pedantic the He 280 was their first jet
fighter and the 262 their first jet
interceptor as from all accounts the He 280 was much more maneuverable. Evidently with the same available power the 280 was faster in level flight, had a higher rate of climb and a higher ceiling. The biggest problems were a shorter range due to smaller size and some problems with tail flutter.
Personally I've long felt that the Heinkel decision to use a twin-tail on the He 280 was a mistake.
The twin tail isn't too bad of a concept, if you think about it, on the early jet layout, but to me, the way it's elevated like that is questionable - a straight join more like the 110 would have likely not been so prone to flutter. That, and it would have been removed with further tests, flutter's too often a teething problem that can be worked out, not a kill on a project in itself.
I'm thinking a Jet Tony would look pretty damn cool, thinking about this all...
She's really ticking along nicely now !

Actually its very bad from a drag standpoint as aircraft speed increases and an anachronism that some designers hung onto well past its sell-by-date.
Evidently the flutter problem, combined with the range issue and some other minor issues, was enough of an excuse for the RLM.
The He 219 would probably also have been better off with a single tail.
Anyhoo, back to the Mustang, personally I find it reminiscent of a mash-up between the P-59, the Metrovick powered Meteor prototype F2/40 and a pulp magazine cover. Multiple layers of cool. ;D

Dassault sellers said just that, to reject F-14/15/18 concurrents: "twin-fins are stupid, dragging, heavy, we are the best". Commercial lies I think (even if education here in France tells us Dassault is the best in the World). Well, what if I love this
Jet-Mustang  not because it is objectively better to kill opponents but because it is so beautiful to me...

Tophe my statement is addressed towards 1940s technology and is not relevant to modern aircraft, they are completely different animals from aerodynamic and technological standpoints.
Holy smokes, Ed, you've got a real winner there! It reminds you of so many different famous aircraft that you can't help but think it's real! You have achieved the pinnacle of whiffery! Many will be fooled by this beauty and I agree with GTX that using the Airacomet scheme (maybe even with red-outlined 1943 U.S. markings?) would be the icing on the cake.

This is a great design  Beautiful
Oh, wow! That is one mod I've never thought of before, but it looks natural! Really nice.
May have missed it, but how you intend to finish it up? NMF? Camo?
Looking forward to seeing this one completed!
I mis-read the title, thought it said 'Jet Twin Mustang', maybe a future project, eh!!! Looking good Ed!
