Good morning, good afternoon or good night (depending on were you are when you read this).
My name is Phil Peterson, Mini-Master of Ceremonies and this is the First Annual The Whiffies (much fanfare).
A funny thing happened to me on the way to the Forum (forum, get it).
A local modeler asked me how would I describe a JMN?
I replied, "However you like, but it wouldn't be accurate!" (rim shot followed by groans in the audience).
At a recent contest the following was overheard during the judging. "That rope on the tank is coiled in the wrong direction." To which the reply was, " Well, perhaps he was a leftist."
Tonight we celebrate the best that What If Modelers offered during 2008 and there was much. The Panel of Judges (OK, just me) spent many hours counting the nominations to see who made it to the final 5 in each category. And then posted those out for the final vote (thank goodness for the Poll).
So lets get the party started with some individual awards.
Our first category did not get the requested five nominees and that is a shame because I am sure that there were many others that could have been selected.

Now we move on to the categories where not only the ideas are voted on but also the modeling skill itself. And that concludes our ceremony for this year.
Congratulations to all the Winners.
The Academy wishes to thank the following:
Tojo633 for the designing and sending the Awards.
Martin H for the use of the What If logo.
Falcon who provided images for the Awards.
Jeffrey Fontaine for correcting links in the Voting threads.
AnthonyP for setting up the Whiffies Child Board.
Puddingwrestler and cthulhu77 for supplying humor.
Aeroplane Driver and Lancer for help fleshing out the original idea and categories.
And everyone else who took time to supply suggestions, made Nominations and Voted.
Without all of you, this effort would have gone like a JMN trying to decide what RLM color an unpainted wooden propeller on a Bf-109 was.
Will the winners please PM Tojo633 for your awards.
Sandy will need a little information and then he will email your certificate(s) to you.

EDIT
Philip on behalf of us all, a BIG thank you for the work you and your crew have put into this production. And as for myself I would like to tha............................................................................GEDDOFF! (a call from stage left)
Woot! Obviously posting pics of Almirante Epanada grinning like a loon influenced people to vote for me.
Congrats to Phil for editing down my supplied jokes into useable formats - and yes, I supplied more and yes, they where worse (although I thought the limerick about the whiffies could have been useful...)
It was really good to see that only one model won in two categories, despite a lot of people fearing that the awards would be scooped by a limited number of whiffists.
I'm sitting in the staff room right now, watching the oscars (it's lunch time), and I must say our ceremony is better. None of that stringing things out and boring victory speaches... although I see that we have considerably fewer starlets in ball gowns. Commerades, we must rectify this for next year!
HOG, you sleigh me.
PW, I was trying to work out guest presenters but couldn't figure out how to work it in with the forum.
As to the request for nicely draped starlets, the calls went surprisingly unanswered.
Many congrats to all the winners and thanks to anyone who nominated me or voted for me. ;D   And to anyone who didn't vote for me....  ef y'all   Really though I feel that next year anyone nominated should be required to post pics of scantily clad females to be their presenters
We could always develop a sister board - one of those anime figure model boards - plenty o' scantily clad females there!
Congrats to all who earned a Whiffie in it's first airing this year! Looking forward to next years Whiffies!
You all took on a huge project with this year...hopefully, it will be simpler for you on the next! Wonderful job, and if you really want semi dressed starlets, just let me know. :)
This is the sort of thing that really makes me love this site, it is just nothing but fun, and hashing up some kits to make something that hollyweird hasn't even dreamed of.
Wonderful.
I'd also like to thank the What If Academy, my mom, and my understanding wife. I have to go cry now, and take some percocets. Or white zinfandel. Or both.

Hey don't forget to add your 2 cents on something political too. (remember you build plastic models, which makes you qualified to solve all the worlds problems ;D)
This was a great idea from start to finish and a huge undertaking, Thank you Phil for making this happen i know it was a lot of leg work
Congrats to all the winners, unbelievable job and excellent competition all around
Wow!!! Thanks folks - much appreciated. honestly though, I have to thank the following members who made this possible:
John, aka Maverick;
Mark, aka BadersBusCompany;
Jeff, aka blackops;
Jon, aka joncarrfarrelly
and of course, Jeremy (aka Rallymodeller) whose idea it was to begin with!!!
Regards,
Greg
PS. I would have posted pics of scantily clad females making political comments, but I like to leave that sort of thing to the Brits.
;D
Excellent stuff! Congratulations all round I think...well done chaps.
Congratulations all round - this really shows the depth of talent we have on this board. I feared that Baz and Greg would sweep the board, but was delighted to see that they didn't.
A big round of applause to Philp for all his work in putting this together - hopefully a few lessons will have been learned and it won't be quite so much work next year ;)
Isn't there a Whiffie Award for Best Whiffie Award Acceptance Speech then?
Congratulations to all the winners, all the nominees and huge thanks to Phillip and the Academy for putting on such a splendid event!
Duh........
The significance of the date has just occured to me , the juxtaposition of the Oscars night (after the umpteenth repeat of 'Miss Kate's' speech on BBC1 Breakfast....) and the Whiffies night.......
What I want to know is where did the Whiffies' Red Carpet get to? And do we get to see photos of all the winners posing for the media? ;D
Seriously though, a neat idea, and it all worked out wonderfully. Well done Philp and others on the team, and well done all the winners too.
i dont have much to say, except this:
a Special thanks to Philp who took the time to organise and tally the votes, he really put an effort into all this.
and also, congratulations to the winner who put all there effort into the winning builds
Congrats to the nominees and of course, to all the winners!
Thanks for your excellent job!

I'd be lying if I hadn't made a version of my acceptance speech. I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror and this would have been a tube of Airfix glue. Well, it's not a tube of Airfix glue now now. ;D ;D
(PS sorry Kate)
PS - Well done all, top models throughout. 'Bout time the modelling magazines (hard copy and online) sat up and took notice. ;D ;D
Echo all that the lads have said above. Phil et al, you've done a h*ll of a job..... next year it WILL be easier, trust me ! - My thanks are simply to whoever voted for my 'Awk...... (twice), really appreciate it whoever you are/were.

[Hoots of laughter here........]
Making his way past the various audience members, oh, who's that? Halle Berry? No time to smooch, darlin. I've got a Whiffie to pick up. Mr. Eastwood, nice to see you up and about without the oxygen cart. Keannu, don't worry about acting lessons---they're clearly over-rated, anyhow. Oh, Jennifer Connelly just slipped me her cell phone number and----oh yuck, Michael Moore just did, too!
Up on stage, looking out at the vast audience...and...I do not see a single model-builder in sight. Who are all these people dressed in blah-blah-black? Where are all the middle-aged men still flying model airplanes around and driving scale tanks on their tables? KeeeeRAP: wrong awards ceremony! Make the best of it: "I'd like to thank the members of the, er, Forum, special thanks to Philp for setting all this up, my mom, Tamiya, Mistress No. 3, my banjo-playing parakeet Rufus, and everybody who voted for anyone in this, the first ever Whiffies Awards!" What's with the orchestra chimin' in? Oooooh....I'm goin already, I'm goin---get yer paws off me, you damn dirty ape!
Thanks, fellas and ladies, you made my whole year! I think these awards are a great way to look back at some truly outstanding and fun works of art by some of the most interesting personalities with whom it has been my pleasure to share a forum.
You folks are the bessssssssssssssssssssst!!!
Philip, thanks to you and all that helped put this together. BRAVO ZULU!!
Considering the talent on this board, I am humbled that my work would be included. Thank y'all very much!! ;D
All, glad to see the acceptance speeches continuing to follow the semi humorous vein I tried to start. I tried to work as many of our ongoing bits as I could. Know I missed a few but think I did Ok.
Still looking for several more acceptance speeches so keep 'em coming. You all deserve your time at the podium.
Philip I don't think you have had near enough accolades for the work you have put into this......and your not gonna get em from me cause I didn't win ;D I thought the bribes and threats would have gotten me something   :drink:
Ron, you can come pout in the corner with me while we figure out how many Sikorsky Skycranes it would take to "borrow" JHM's stash ;D
I have to admit, while it was a ton of work looking up things to nominate, it was worth every minute to go back and see all the amazing stuff you guys put out in a years time! Never ceases to amaze me what a creative bunch resides here
Perhaps Phillip should have a 'Best Organisation Whiffie' himself for doing all this lot?????
How about it guys?
Congratulations to All, there's some great stuff in there! But there's so many I don't recall seeing before, guess I'm not spending enough time on the board when I thought the opposite was the case. :o
Congratulations to all the winners and the nominees.
Major  to philp for organizing it all!
Philip,
This has been a ton of fun to watch and goof around with.
Let's see where this winds up in a decade or better, eh?
Daryl J., glad to have seen this unfold

Ten years, shoot me now
Hmmm, maybe I can talk Billy or Ellen into giving me a break.
10 years from now the judging will be easier, we'll all be old geezers building 1/32 or larger scale kits (https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.doomisland.com%2Fimages%2Fquick_photos%2Frotf%255B1%255D.gif&hash=807109ca53935ac2747b48039f3a7c53847d84a3)
Yep, and I can always cut it down to 1 category, that would help.
Could be worse....
Imagine RADISH in a strapless, backless , red cocktail dress interviewing those that have been nominated a la Academy Awards.....
(smacks forehead)
How could I have missed that opportunity.

Except me and the other infuriatingly young members of the forum. We will continue to build things in a real man's scale (ie: 72nd) and posting itty bitty little pics which can only be viewed with magnifiers!
We're not dead yet, and keep your hands off of my wife's thigh.
Sent my Dad the link to this (ok, so I am a little proud ;D) and he had some comments he wanted me to pass along.
"I have just spent over an hour going over the material and I think You did an Outstanding job. Must have been a lot of work for you and your helpers and I see a lot of post after midnight :-)
Wish I could make a comment because the big thing I noticed was that the people sending in comments used a civil language which I really find lacking in today's society. That one point alone added a lot of creditability to the "whatif modelers," The winners had some great builds and the imagination boggles the mine
Could you make that one for me? You could sign it Chief Pete and maybe mention that you know him as Dad- Looking forward to see what they can build for next year. It's come a long way since we put two pieces of plastic together to form the body of a plane hasn't it?
Great Job Son, Thanks for sharing it with me"
My Dad is a CMSgt (Ret) from the USAF with 28 yrs service including two tours in England (first time he met my Mom to be and the second time my younger brother was born there) and a tour in Thailand during the Vietnam War (Udorn AFB). I watched him build models when I was 5 and started my own when I was 6. He is the reason I gained an interest in aviation and Military History. He also has the gift of gab which I may have inherited, just a bit. Without him, there probably wouldn't be a Whiffies. Thanks for everything Dad.
Well, Sir Phil, tell him I just toasted you both !
HI Guys!
Congrats for All! I'm very happy to see these beutifull models, in the topics, and in this competition! Proud to be here! (pls excuse me, that I weren't been here for a while, started in new job and have little time for forums... :( )
Salute to your dad Philip
Macal I hope you still have time to scratch up your excellent goodies
