Only a couple of days to go.  Here is what I will be doing for my main course.

So will this be a JASDF bird or a USAF Aggressor? Either would make a nice contrast to the grey-on-grey real-world Raptors!

I will be watching with interest as I have a similar idea only in 1/72nd.  Raptor is these markings.

Have the decals (also from TwoBobs) but still haven't been able to find a kit at the LHS.  Trying for the Revell kit but think the new HobbyBoss would also work.

Work has started.  The initial impression when you first open the box is "whoa, this is gunna be good!"  The 1-piece fuselage halves look excellent

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Ffuselage1.jpg&hash=db042352b41af3ffafb6d955e8688729a4b14a32)

Although there is a little flash around some panel lines, but no biggie.  Otherwise looks excellent.

A couple of comparison shots of the kit and Wolfpack parts

<=== New avatar to go with latest build :)

First decision of the build - do I include drop tanks or not?  I'm kinda tempted cos they look so big and chunky....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Floadout1.jpg&hash=55a8b09512d57f703713c70104a8d329d87bc26f)

Because of all that lovely weapon bay detail, and because I may not build another of this model ever again I'm going to open them all up and give it a full weapons load  The 4 x AAM-4s are from the Hasegawa weapons sets, the AAM-5s on the other hand...

I'm planning on modifying the IRIS-Ts from the Revell 1/48 Typhoon.  The plans below are slightly overscale....maybe 1/45.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Faam-5.jpg&hash=71a35a8de89958268853e39f285dd285894d9984)

I'm not looking for absolute accuracy here, just good enough that you can't tell from a cursory glance.  Its a 3 stage process as far as I can tell

1)  Replace rear fins with correct shape and move them back
2)  Reduce span of main fins
3)  Remove nobbly bits on nose
4)  Move main fins forward slightly.  I may not do this due to the way the missile body fairs into the gap between the fins.  That and I'm inherently lazy

Surgery has also been performed on the cockpit coaming to allow the Wolfpack part to be inserted

L-R:  Kit part, resin part, WP instructions
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcoaming1.jpg&hash=7f1210da2205fa82454bb503764c90f6d8aca0d2)

I decided to go the old "chain drill" route using the point of my knife
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcoaming2.jpg&hash=7548716b568a701165744949cc592d87eaca71bc)

Connect the dots, et voila!
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcoaming3.jpg&hash=5d7b643b309040bd32c3e10c6c93808fcc75a51c)

A bit of scraping and fettling later and the replacement part slots in.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcoaming4.jpg&hash=39691f6fccd8d53d104bdafe3f63a13c3c78344c)

Simples!

As usual, all questions, comments, advice etc gratefully received.

Since it's a whif, go full monty and use the ramjet bits of the Meteors in the Typhoon kits to make AAM-6s out of the AAM-4s!

Nice resin bits!  I like the idea of the drop tanks, I don't think I've ever seen pics of the F-22 with them fitted.  How about scratching dome with more stealthy shape?  I remember seeing pics of some like that on drawings of the Tonka 2000.

I've been working almost non-stop on this for the last fortnight, 1-2 hours every night, basically preparing all the bits that will need spraying with white primer.  As the photo below shows, that's a LOT of parts ;D
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fbitsforspraying.jpg&hash=8ebda4cace51f4c40cc525cedd158397c14d8c2a)

And that doesn't include the free weapons set that goes straight into the spares box (2 x AIM-9M, 2 x AIM-9X, 6 x AIM-120C, 2 x GBU-32 :) )
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fweaponsset.jpg&hash=637ba580aee3da575970090da05f3530a0df4b95)

Speaking of weapons, my AAM-5 missile bash has been done.  I've reduced the span of the main fins, cut off the rear ones and replaced them with the rear fins from a 1/72 Meteor courtesy of the Revell Typhoon, as well as cut off a few other nobbly bits.  I didn't bother moving the main fins forward a couple of mm - it would be easier to just build the missile from scratch.  If someone ever releases 1/48 AAM-5s (TwoMikes I'm looking in your direction), then I'll replace them.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Faam-5comparison.jpg&hash=25e8ad339e0d13b0dc17d9e49495e109a5d906b6)

I've also got to work on the Wolfpack nozzles - a couple of pics showing kit and WP in comparison (Wolfpack is lighter grey)

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fexhaustcomparison1.jpg&hash=cdd73c909f5d38db9ee3c97998d36499ff04e67e)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fexhaustcomparison2.jpg&hash=73ad55378d4bdf3335d28e123758336dd46266b5)

They also supply a self-adhesive set of etched parts which vastly improve the bare kit nozzles
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fexhaustcomparison3.jpg&hash=10937654936448bb8ff9cfca864df761cf4a5671)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fexhaustcomparison4.jpg&hash=ffdfda76bb6f2e34e5feca71dc4d4c7e082e0c99)

The result of The great ARC Raptor nozzle debate (http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=175296&hl=raptor%20exhaust) seemed to be that the faces are scalloped, but its subtle enough to be virtually flat in scale form.  So I will be attempting to recreate this effect with paint & staining.....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2FAF-2220ship220Oct0512.jpg&hash=b0c0c1bf5da8fe377b35fec476130fbd47d9b5e8)

One quick question - what colour are the wingtip lights?  The instructions say red & blue, where I thought it would be red & green?  I've not been able to find a definitive pic.

All comments, advice, criticism etc welcome.

Here's how I remember it: The light looks green when switched on, because it shines a light from a yellow bulb through a blue cover/filter. When it is switched off it will look blue because there's no yellow light emanating from the bulb. IIRC, it has to do with yellow bulbs having a longer life than white ones.

Some lights on Vipers (pics on PrimePortal.net):

Well, this has been stalled for a month since I bought an Xbox360     but I do have some pics to share of work I did before then.

Cockpit is done.  Quite hard to do these modern cockpits with their NVG friendly "how much more black can you get?" finish.  And they are a bit boring too with their lack of knobs & dials, just big MFDs.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcockpit1.jpg&hash=ecfc19bb11126b966901d5badb8b9c9347e3519d)

I used a base colour of Tamiya NATO black, with a black wash and Panzer Grey highlights.  Quite subtle, and hard to pick up in pics

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fcockpit4.jpg&hash=8d772cf9eca2ab9bdc7fabd9df806a1533b25007)

Also done the main wheels.  One thing I do like is Academys inclusion of the data stencils.  A nice touch I wish more manufacturers would do

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fwheels1.jpg&hash=9348a2b9013f19ca494e1c8bd87b7d598ff9e918)

Just noticed from the pics that the tyres need another going over  :banghead:

Just looked at the reference photo of the F-15J again. Will you tape off the original grey camo stencils and apply the black and white over that giving it that intermittent look? (https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi107.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm309%2FChernayaAkula%2FEmoticons%2Fw00t.gif&hash=233b19d4948d33281ababadcabae957b0e6c14b0) That'll look killer! I don't think so - the masking is going to be complicated enough as it is!  There's the grey leading edges of everything, then all the metallic panels etc

This is what I am talking about!  The panels on the spine are provided as decals, but the stuff around the flaps, ailerons + tailplanes will require MORE masking  :banghead:

Just a small update.  I've finished the main weapons bay - this is all OOB.  Painted using a combination of references and artistic license

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fweaponsbay2.jpg&hash=91d29621a518b04895cb804ec67243bef73c3255)

I also discovered a problem with the rear fins on the AAM-4s fitting in the weapons bay.  ISTR a similar problem with the AMRAAM which lead to its fins being cropped?  Looks like I might have to develop a special AAM-4R ;)

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FF-22J%2520Arctic%2520Aggressor%2Fweaponsbay3.jpg&hash=4d2fe35cb2c2012ae1d3a0b6fd6c8398f4433dec)

Don't think it's going to be finished before Wednesday....
