Title: RAAF F-5F * * F I N I S H E D * *
Post by: Ian the Kiwi Herder on August 03, 2012, 09:55:44 PM
Before we left for the far side of the planet, I took some time-off between packing duties, shuttling the little'uns around and real work to map-out a few model projects for when we got settled. Some real world, some what if...

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv470%2F280163%2FGeneric%2520What%2520Ifs%2FF5F.jpg&hash=04bd00717bb3e6287a243eb0d6497cb86e8223ae)

I managed to snag this Monogram F-5F off eBay back in February, it will be the first part of a two-part RAAF project, similar to my Canadian Mirage builds from a couple of years back. This time, and perhaps not surprisingly, I'm planning a series of 'WestPac' themed projects. All of these builds will have a vaguely common, linked theme - an alternative historical context, if you like.

AFN, more soon.

Paint.

Tongariro isn't that far away about 120km, there's another massive volcano (Ruapaio), which you can see on a VERY clear day from here, just in front of it. The prevailing wind in the vicinity of the eruption is from the west so the ash blew off to the east, nowhere near us.

Hopefully will be able to do some modelling again tomorrow.

...Well given the GI-NORMOUS gap between the halves below the cockpit, "together" is a moot point  :banghead:

OK, so here's the results following the first PSR session. Should have it done with one more visit to the workbench. Will break-out the tripod for the next pics these aren't very good at all  :-\

Good news(ish). Been working on a couple of 1:24 race-car projects (NASCAR Stock Cars, if you happen to be interested in such beasts, drop me a PM and I'll send you a link or two to where I've posted them), finished one, just about to finish the next; but tomorrow, I'm taking a break from the last question on my last module of my Real Estate Diploma - mainly 'cos I need some help with this very last question - and I'm going to start painting the little Northrop. Should have some photos up on Wednesday my time.

Manly hugz to all (you know who you are  :drink:)

For those interested in such things, the colours are all Xtracolour enamels: Intermediate Blue (WWII USN colour), RLM78 (WWII Luftwaffe desert scheme) and under the wings only, Barley Grey (Current RAF camo colour). Looks OK, not great, but OK.

...AND NOT BEFORE TIME !!

I really couldn't stand this build by the time I got to the end of it. Fitted where it touched (just), see-through fuselage (no blanking plates, but easily solved), sparsely detailed and what there is is, erm... 'clunky' at best. And on top of all of that it's engineered so you can only have the canopies in the open position, hence the cavernous gaps you see here !!

Arghhhh  :banghead:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv470%2F280163%2FGeneric%2520What%2520Ifs%2FF5F1.jpg&hash=a9ec5dc16a49de96a25806ff2f5f43aeee6a25a6)

As a painting experiment pending a MUCH more complex build of a MUCH newer and 'buildable' kit it served its' purpose but as a model in its' own right, it was a complete pig. I don't recall my first Monogram F-5 (a single seater) being that much trouble, but it was close to thirty years ago and my brain has taken-on a fair degree of alcohol since then. As a conclusion, let me put it this way:

"Never again !!"

Yep, that covers it !!
