Wonderful stuff.

Did they aerotow or winch launch the Kite?

Ah, it was a DOUBLE aerotow! I just found the pic on your Flickr page.

My first business trip to RIAT (long may that continue! :) ) They are marking BoB 75 and I got to see 16 spitfires, hurricanes and 109s in the air at once!

Unfortunately I failed to plan and thus achieved P.P.P. due to my camera batteries dying juts prior to the Reds display...  This is a taster of the best of what I managed

Good stuff Caveman, I was there too. Did you get wet as well?

I DID remember new batteries, and used my short lens on one camera and the long lens (300 mm) on the other. But the result is I now have over 250 pics to edit!  :banghead: :banghead:

All my pics of the flying Osprey froze the rotors/props dead, so it looks really odd, I may have to Photoshop some 'blur' onto them later.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg673.imageshack.us%2Fimg673%2F4630%2FDNXiZv.jpg&hash=44764dd832a988dd30f12cdac3956194356a8d69)

My two 'stars' were the total madman flying the Atlas, it's almost INVERTED in the pic below, and the P-1. It STILL looks like a sawn-off DC8 with a MAD sting to me.  ;D

More pics later.

Don't be silly Kit, the taper on that fin is more like a Boeing, but then the nose does look like a Douglas design.

Nope, I'm with Kit on this one.  Deffo an adolescent DC-8.

They had the 2nd P-1 parked right alongside a P-8 Poseidon, and they're about the same size, so  why does the P-1 need FOUR of the same CFM-56 engines?

Another P-1 funny, when I first saw it the crew had just arrived and they assembled a tow bar for it, as below. Note the main entrance door is closed.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg661.imageshack.us%2Fimg661%2F9959%2FLm83vb.jpg&hash=b678f919745525dac47863616f6b5deac1598e39)

Shortly afterward one of them reached into a landing gear door and the air-stair slid out from under the door and unfolded itself to the ground. The crew climbed up the stairs and went to open the door, but it wouldn't comply.  ;D

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg540.imageshack.us%2Fimg540%2F1443%2FhZlnr9.jpg&hash=c63d63c6f6221bdf744550db040280326ecfe318)

All in all four of them had a go and it STILL wouldn't open, and I never did see it open so the standing joke of the day was to wonder if they'd found the key every time we saw a P-1 crewman.  ;D

Well that's because they're not the same engines Kit, P-8 uses two 27,000 lbt CFM-56-7B's, while the P-1 uses four IHI Corporation F7 13,000 lbt engines, similar in size to what the CF-34-8E's that the Embraer 170 uses

Someone there was telling me porkies then! They said the P-1 had CFM-56s, and they certainly looked very similar.

A few more RIAT '15 pics.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg913.imageshack.us%2Fimg913%2F7460%2FPx9XL2.jpg&hash=1e3bf9966829880061ff07786352f72339f17a0f)

THAT Typhoon, and it looks really good. A pity it wasn't flown to show the upper camo scheme though.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg537.imageshack.us%2Fimg537%2F8591%2FTnfJxY.jpg&hash=003920e9a2a87e962255bd20ee03c262ca2bab09)

One for the Bronco fans. (me included) Sadly it didn't fly y'day.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg661.imageshack.us%2Fimg661%2F5389%2FKIRleG.jpg&hash=88994390b8ab1ef4d2a8963929c387a314e10e97)

A Czech Hind-D, the first one I've ever seen fly, awesome.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg538.imageshack.us%2Fimg538%2F7019%2F066CDP.jpg&hash=54f5d539c996e209a3e5865a0a5ea9b966651cb9)

This looks like a potentially expensive (and fatal...) mid-air, but they passed each other OK.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg540.imageshack.us%2Fimg540%2F8872%2F4kn2V1.jpg&hash=8fe791dee4a777e4cad920c06d7df3ec86cd5663)

A Mirage 2000N nuclear bomber, and wasn't it LOUD!

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg673.imageshack.us%2Fimg673%2F8632%2FwHMoEM.jpg&hash=31540a5914d01730db902e5d5df570d5a175ea83)

Another Osprey shot, I didn't notice the ramp gun until I looked at the pic!

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg633.imageshack.us%2Fimg633%2F8789%2FjyG1sV.jpg&hash=3fa971fce335e16036fed1e6169aae6a6e643a48)

My fave shot of the day, I've NEVER seen three Hurricanes in formation before.

Hmmmm not sure what's going on here I can see them fine on three different browsers. I have changed the links slightly.... would be obliged if you guys could tell me if they are working or not.

I posted some model pictures as well in the Group build same style of links but they seem to be seen by several users.

Well to-day was day one (flying display) of this years Scottish Airshow at Prestwick.
The Flying takes place along the seafront at Ayr about three miles south of the airport.

Highlights for me were :

The BoB Tyohoon.

Yes indeed. We were sitting on the sea wall and the beach (not to mention behind us on the large grass area (the low green) was pretty full of people sitting on chairs or blankets, and for most of the display that is how it  was.
Not when the Vulcan performed, the whole area was a mass of people on their feet. It was very moving.

How did the Viggen get there? Did it  fly in as well?

That's the JA-37 fighter version, isn't it?

It flew in. Didn't see it, and it did not fly at the display, DAMN!
I have yet to see at Viggen flying.

Ah yes but this is not the fighter version it is the attack version with upgraded systems to enable it to use newer missiles, hence the new designation.
Check the link.

I used to look after the 72 channel structural test system that SAAB bought to test the various Viggen airframes. Looking at the time line on that Wiki link it looks like the upgrades I carried out on the rig in 1992-3 were to test the loads for that monster RBS-15 missile.

I had to swap some actuators around for the increased loads on those inboard pylons and they certainly needed to use the larger ones! Of course they never told me what was going on, just that they needed a different loading configuration.  ;D

I think I'm right in saying that all JAs have the same swept-back fin-tip extension as the two-seaters, while all AJs have the original fin tip as seem in the photo. Also, the cannon pod on the JA is quite visible (not from every angle, of course).

Went to Southport Airshow on Saturday. Glorious day with some truly excellent displays, and of course, one never-to-be-seen-again formation. I didn't take my camera because I'm struggling with a sprained ankle and I didn't need extra things to carry, plus it's not really set up for this kind of thing, but these are just some of the many excellent pics to be found on Twitter under hashtag #southportairshow

They had a cockpit section at Woodford which they used to let you go in when the air show was on. Don't know if it's still there and going to be part of the new heritage centre or if it went to the XH558 operation.

I still remember my friend Lisa's face as she sat there being told about taking off with an eyepatch on so that when you got blinded by nuclear flash you could swap the patch over and still fly....

Yesterday was the first event of the Kiwi season: a New Zealand Warbirds Association open day at their Ardmore, Auckland HQ. As with last time the day started off dull and wet but improved to sun...as my arms and legs will attest :S 5hr drive there, 5hr on the field and 5hr drive home...I have today off work to recover.

Only ground shots as I leave the G2A stuff to the pros!

I've been told there were two types of Spitfire trainer canopy. The original ones were as you see here like the front canopy, quite low and streamlined. Later versions had the big bubble which allowed better vision for the instructor.
The New Zealand two-seater is numbered MH367 and was rebuilt after a crash or two using the front half of MH367 and parts of ML417 (which was converted back to being a single seater in the 1980s).

The lower style rear canopy was originally produced by the Russians during WWII.
AFAIK it used a standard single seater sliding hood for the second seat.

Very nice Beavers! The red-RNZAF-schemed one flew a STOL demo...with the wind it was practically a VTOL demo! The operators of the amphib Beaver also have a floats-only one and fly tours and taxi services around Auckland. I'll do it one day. And thanks Capn! For an iPhone camera I'm pleased with the results.

Nick's right. This version is often referred to as the Grace Canopy after Nick Grace (whose widow and children still fly their Mk.IX ML407). I prefer it to the IAC-style bubble based on looks. The owner Doug Brooker flew a lovely restrained display in her on the day. A mate is groundcrew on it...and always seems to enjoy telling me about his latest taxi ride or flight! Here's a model I built of MH367 from a Matchbox 1/72 kit a while back:

Perhaps it's that "ours" has cannon and blisters installed? Incidentally, ML407 served in (and wears the colours of) an RNZAF squadron.

The lighter paint scheme on '367 makes the depth of the 'bridge piece' of the canopy more obvious. On '407 it's so dark you don't notice where the canopy stops and the structure starts so much.

Good point, that could be it.

This weekend The Vintage Aviator Limited (http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/) - Sir Peter Jackson's WW1 aircraft restoration/construction company - is having the first of its monthly flying weekends at its Hood Aerodrome base, about 3.5hr from me. I'm going but not sure if it'll be Saturday or Sunday - totally weather dependent (WIND!). I'll share photos if anyone's interested? I was hoping to see the DH.4 but apparently it's still having engine issues, so I'll have to make do with the original Camel and a Hanriot as well as the others!

Sunday's the better day weather-wise...but Saturday has an evening "show" if nothing/little flies during the day...decisions, decisions!

Saturday it was!

Some background. The Vintage Aviator Limited is a New Zealand company which restores and builds World War 1 aircraft, the vast majority to airworthy condition. This weekend was the first of their monthly Flying Weekends, an opportunity for the public to check out the collection and for the pilots to get current again and practice displays for future airshows.

The wind was too bad for much to fly on Saturday, but I still went away happy. I saw one of the aircraft I was hoping to - the original Hanriot HD.1 - but unfortunately the newbuild Airco DH.4 is having engine issues so wasn't seen outside. One of the pilots told us there are also two Fokker Eindeckers in the works. Exciting stuff!

This is the unassuming public hangar from the carpark. They have two other hangars onsite (that I know of) but there cameras are forbidden and entry is by invitation.

These three flew on Saturday along with an Se.5a. The DH.5 is the only representative example anywhere, the Tiger Moth is used for training pilots for the collection, and the new-build Albatros D.Va has a lovely-sounding original Mercedes up front.:

Then John Lanham (former Canberra and Skyhawk pilot) took seven of us on an informal flightline tour, letting us get up close and personal (and unlimited photo-taking opportunities) as well as educating us on type histories and what each is like to fly. It sounds like the Bebe is a delight, likewise the Se.5a, whereas the E.V/D.VIII is a tricky little so-and-so.

Unlike the TVAL mini-airshows of the past, the two resident WW2 fighters stayed put in the hangar. Both are smaller up close than I remembered! It was great to have a close-up look at them and pay silent tribute to them both. They are former RNZAF machines and for a while were the only airworthy examples from our wartime force - we had 424 Corsairs and 297 P-40s, now there are two and four respectively still flying.

And finally, the people. I recognised a handful of pilots including Bevan Dewes (youngest current WW1 pilot - he's not yet 25!), seen here topping up the D.Va with oil while Keith Skilling (known for his Corsair and Mosquito displays) guides him. There were a number of ground crew around also, but the pilots all doubled as crew anyway so it's hard to know who's who!

So while yesterday was the flying day by all accounts, I still had an excellent day on Saturday. I totally recommend coming along to one of these.

Glorious  ;D Thank you very much indeed Zac , you are a very lucky man. Love the Be 2c, Nieuport  and the DH 5 in particular

The DH.5 is a little disappointing because it has a Lycoming flat-four so it doesn't look right from the front or sound right from any distance or angle, but it IS the only full-scale DH.5 anywhere! The first time I saw it (Easter 2005) it flew with a DH.2, which was awesome. Sadly the DH.2 is now in a museum, otherwise I'd be getting excited about an Airco formation of it, the 5 and the new build DH.4.

The Nieuport has a Le Rhone rotary which sounds and smells fantastic (and is apparently a delight to fly) - it's tiny, I couldn't fit in it if I tried, I'm sure - and the Be.2c is the second of five or so Be reproductions built by TVAL. They're very quiet and I think would be fun for cruising around, but forget combat!!

Sunday was definitely a flying day by all accounts, and they even wheeled out the newly-restored Camel for photos...posed next to their Camel replica. Cool stuff!

I'm going to TVAL's January flying event this Sunday - the last one was the weekend immediately after Christmas so gave it a miss - and the weather is looking great. Anyone for photos?

I love the Be.2 pics with the sunlight coming through the wing fabric.
Thanks for posting this.

Well since you all asked so nicely...here's my take on a great day full of catch-ups and aeronautical goodness. The rain stayed away, as did the sun....although, to look at my sunburnt shins, you wouldn't think so (ouch!).

I heard that on Saturday Jess the night-bomber FE2 had trouble starting, so they employed a rather modern-day method to warm the engine and oil prior to yesterday's display. Does anyone make resin fan heaters in 1/32??

The lovely, restored and original Sopwith Camel. Sadly it didn't fly but, boy oh boy is it pretty! And smaller than I remembered.

The equally lovely and original Hanriot. We heard that Belgian ace Willy Coppens himself flew this one in an international aerobatic competition. Again it sadly didn't fly, but it was very special to see it on the grass.

Bevan Dewes ably demonstrated what it takes to get into the FE2. I really enjoyed hearing him talk about the type and hope he gets to fly it someday soon.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa388%2FZacYates%2FTVAL%2520shows%2F9FF6586D-721B-451C-A120-71914B8B9052_zpskye1zknp.jpg&hash=fcd4620b5c7e332447c3493a5cf2f3a054a71fa4) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/ZacYates/media/TVAL%20shows/9FF6586D-721B-451C-A120-71914B8B9052_zpskye1zknp.jpg.html)
As well as Jess, the Fokker E.V also had a temperamental engine which refused to start, so the poor thing was left out in the paddock to think about what it had done. A shame as it's always a treat to see it fly.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa388%2FZacYates%2FTVAL%2520shows%2FE8F73ACA-A66B-4547-913B-4ADF0681CD4F_zpspomwjan0.jpg&hash=26e40d9be07746e2a029c04b6a55fe8ebe1299c2) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/ZacYates/media/TVAL%20shows/E8F73ACA-A66B-4547-913B-4ADF0681CD4F_zpspomwjan0.jpg.html)
Just a general view. The Sopwith Triplane was flown really well and showed some surprising manoeuvrability.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa388%2FZacYates%2FTVAL%2520shows%2F0EE495D6-5D8B-477C-9440-F1482522F180_zpsqomyj11b.jpg&hash=fdf4e9f962fc592a9cb208a19a0a8034c098d7e9) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/ZacYates/media/TVAL%20shows/0EE495D6-5D8B-477C-9440-F1482522F180_zpsqomyj11b.jpg.html)
Jess did start - to much applause from the crowd - but when they tried again later so she could fly it just wouldn't happen, so sister ship Zanzibar/The Scotch Express was wheeled out instead. It's always nice to have a backup!

One of the big highlights for me was to see the original Avro 504k ZK-ACU fly twice. Such a pretty machine. Seeking it on the dry grass was really atmospheric for me and a real privilege.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa388%2FZacYates%2FTVAL%2520shows%2F40C03A2E-6985-464B-BCA5-59A90F3EBE2C_zpswwm2yyal.jpg&hash=740ae8b4719e5a3607d1d49bb6f65679f88a1ca9) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/ZacYates/media/TVAL%20shows/40C03A2E-6985-464B-BCA5-59A90F3EBE2C_zpswwm2yyal.jpg.html)

Highlights: comfortable weather, seeing friends, great flying. Seeing the restored original Camel in person (stripy cowl, seen up top) although it didn't fly. Seeing Bevan fly the BE2f - young enough to be a squadron leader in the Great War! - and seeing him fly it in company with the BE2c (early). Seeing the red-nosed Pup fly a cool little display.

Lowlights: whilst on the flightline walk hearing the Fokker monoplane behind the group "choof" as though its prop had been turned, seeing a spectator/non-TVAL person walk away from said prop, and then seeing that same person lean on the 504k to make it rock on its gear. I was too shy to say anything but, come on, keep your hands to yourself!!! The flightline walks on the other side of the rope are a really cool feature and I'd hate for them to stop happening because someone wanted to see what would happen.

Enjoy! I'll upload some more photos later on if work doesn't get too crazy (I don't like Mondays, TELL ME WHY).

Love those pics Zac, you'll have to see the Shuttleworth collection when you come over here.

The old method of engine warming involved a bucket of sand soaked with a gallon of diesel. Light it up and the gentle heat would defrost the engine enough to make the oil viscous.

Thanks all! Yes, sad that Chitty didn't fly but it was driven around so some kids could have an airside tour of the field! It makes all sorts of sounds, too - sirens, honks etc.

Cap'n C - impressive indeed, and this isn't even all of it. Seven Fokker Dr.Is, an original Bristol Fighter, another Fokker E.V/D.VIII, Pfalz D.III, another Sopwith Pup that was in the hangar and the repro Camel that flew but I didn't photograph, as well as DH.4, Eindecker (two of, I think?), and BE.12 repros yet to fly....and then there's all the statics - repro and original - in the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, not to mention WIPs we don't know about yet! We joke about a Gotha but who knows what's possible.

Nick - agreed! Shuttleworth and Duxford are the absolutely-positively-must-dos on my list. Interesting to read of how they did the engine warming way back when.

I was fortunate enough to get to RIAT yesterday.  For anyone planning on going, you are in for a treat!  Never seen a raptor in the flesh before and their demonstration was amazing.

Oh, the yeah and watch out for a little demonstration by the F35, if you arent paying attention you may miss when it lands...  ;)

Enjoy! (Is that a reds F35?)

If you want to see the F35 VL touch down youll need to find a spot near the tower.  They've had to put some matting down over the grass between the runway and taxiway so that it doesnt damage the surfaces...

Which is more than can be said over the WELL OTT commentary from a member of the 'USAF Raptor Demonstration Team'. He went on and on so much that I'd lost interest before the F-22 even started its take-off roll!  :banghead:

The flying was excellent though, and the dual flypast by the F-22 and the F-35A looked like a 1/72 and 1/48 scale pairing of the same aeroplane from side view!  :o

My first sight of an F-22 in the composite. I STILL think they're ugly compared to an F-23.

An interesting re-fuelling pod aboard an RAAF Voyager (or a KC-30 as they insist on calling it)
The pod has its own cargo hatches and wings too!

I thought that about the atlas nacelles too.... What's going on there???  :-\  and you thought there were a lot of eurofighters, what about F-16's? There were more of them than there were Ford Focus's in the car parks

I have a mental block when it comes to F-16s, unless they're Dutch ones doing STUPID things up in the sky, and I just don't see them. It's the same block that stops me reading about models in scales larger than 1/72............  ;D

Hmmmmm.... Interesting  I do love the Dutch one though, but most displays are very same-y with them. Love the noise though  ;D I have a similar scale block and then my brother goes and gets a 1:24 spitfire for me  :-\

F22/F35 combo looks like mum out for a quick flight with it's newly fledged chick  ;D Seriously I never noticed the similarity before, but with computer aided (or should that be controlled ?) why am I surprised. Nice looking combo in flight, just wish they didn't have that "needs a coat of paint look" but that's a function of the stealth bit I suppose ?

A400 looks good in the air as well. I won't appreciate it's size until I see one close up I suppose but it always looks a little small to me, and yes I know it isn't it just looks that way.

Exactly my thoughts over the F-22 paintjob. If you did that on a model it wouldn't get ANYwhere in a competition on the grounds that you hadn't done it properly!

The A400 is a BIG aeroplane, more toward the C-17 than the C-130 end of the spectrum. I went aboard the static RAF one at RIAT and it was suitably huge. The cargo area is amazingly smooth inside, large panels covering the ribs etc, and nothing like a Herk or a C-5, and pretty darned impressive I thought.

I was quoting the crew aboard the aircraft. There's differences between the three types depending on their volumetric capacity or their lifting capacity.

Aah! right -- I see where you're coming from.  I've read somewhere that it can handle the same pallets that the C-17 and C-5 can handle. The article said it can even take any type a Sea-Can too.

A couple of weeks ago The Vintage Aviator Limited kicked off their summer Flying Weekends. While there had been no flying by the time I left at 1pm because of the wind, and Dad decided against coming because of the said wind, I had a great morning at TVAL. Great to catch up with some mates, as well as the three newbies:

https://youtu.be/ThA1YkyaDqE - according to TVAL, this is the world's sole airworthy original Sopwith Camel. I don't actually like Camels but it was a real thrill to see and hear it fly in person. I think it was built in 1917...so it's 100yo this year!
https://youtu.be/fTQg_8bqGiE - the world's sole representative Royal Aircraft Factory BE.12. It sounds like a sewing machine! When taxiing it sounds very clattery.
https://youtu.be/x9zsobEfx34 - one of two Oberursel rotary-powered Fokker E.V/D.VIIIs owned by TVAL. A very cool machine to see fly - former Canberra and Skyhawk pilot John Lanham, who flew it yesterday, rates it as the best fighter produced by Imperial Germany.

JayBee - if it weren't for the modern light aircraft, you'd never know!

Gorgeous machines...had no idea a Fokker monoplane was still in existence. Wasn't that the one at the end of "The Blue Max"...knobbled Mr Ego..er...Peppard?

They have two, both modern reproductions (one an E.V, this one a D.VIII) built in Germany, powered by Oberursel rotaries they built themselves here in NZ. I think the idea was that the aircraft in The Blue Max was a Fokker monoplane, but the Morane they used was rather more modern!

Why does New Zealand have such a strong wabird scene, especially for early biplanes?

Now I'm going to have to watch it again ;D....haven't seen it for decades. "Aces High" was good too; again, haven't seen it for a very long time but I vaguely remember the a/c were pretty convincing.

As far as Great War aircraft are concerned, three words: Sir Peter Jackson. The Blue Max is one of his favourite movies. He imported the replica Camel (photo six) in the late 1990s/very very early 2000s, which started his collection. He bought up replicas, then big lots of aircraft, photos and memorabilia, from around the world and brought them to NZ. Then he founded a company to build aircraft and engines (http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/) (the chief pilot and head of TVAL, Gene DeMarco, came over to fly the Camel and stayed. He has a ton of experience at Old Rhinebeck) as well as a model company to produce top-notch 1/32 kits (http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/), and has a bunch of his artefacts and aircraft on display at a museum in Blenheim (http://www.omaka.org.nz/exhibits.htm). A friend has created a spreadsheet of the publicly-known aircraft he has and it's massive - dozens of replicas, TVAL reproductions and authentic aircraft like the striped Camel and Avro 504K in my photos. In addition the factory is building 12 different WW1 engine types.

The original warbird scene was kickstarted by the retirement of the RNZAF's Harvards in 1977 and their disposal the following year. A bunch of ex-RNZAF pilots bought about a dozen and that formed the core of the NZ Warbirds Association.

It's a bad country to live in if you were an impressionable child living near an active airport with parents who bought you warbird magazines and airshow videos

You can't hear it on the video so well because of where I was standing, but they have good procedures in place to prevent amputation and decapitation by pretty props. Besides, hand-starting planes is fun! I used to know who to do a Tiger Moth, but I get the feeling that doesn't require so strong a swing.

I need to rewatch that. Malcolm McDowell's one of my faves! From memory they used scaled SE.5as, but they still look good.

Just a bump - placeholder really: this weekend the Royal New Zealand Air Force is holding the 2017 Air Tattoo (https://www.airtattoo.mil.nz/), a big airshow to celebrate the service's 80th anniversary. International visitors including F-15s from Singapore which arrived yesterday, an RAF Airbus Atlas, and a pair of USAF F-16s which will do demos. Very excited! Expect pictures Sunday NZT as I'm going for Saturday only.

Thanks gents! It was a fantastic day and the only issue was one of my own creation: forgetting my sunscreen. I was a very, very sore boy on the way home and yesterday.

As far as the Canuckistanis go, I think they came just to come and be part of the festivities. But, like the Airbus Atlas, the C-130J is in the running to replace our C-130Hs...

zenrat - true, but we don't get much in the way of modern material at our shows so for us it's actually a treat. It's only really been since about 2006 when the Aussies started bringing over F-111s, then Hornets and Hawk 127s, that we've had foreign military attendees. The F-15s, for example, are the first of their kind at a Kiwi show since 1984. And the F-16 was making its New Zealand airshow debut after not having been here since 1984...and what a debut. It was the best jet display I've ever seen. Ear-shattering, condensation-generating, G-pulling amazingness.

Are the tanks real survivors or replicas ?

The tanks are replicas that run. Bloody noisy things they are, too! They have blank-firing MGs and pyro-equipped cannon. Both are products of Weta Workshop.

For the WW2 segment there was a replica German something (no-one said what it was and I didn't ask), and an original running M3 Stuart which lives 30min drive from me! The owner has another he's now restoring too.

The props team also built a panjandrum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panjandrum) which laid down quite the smokescreen and ended up detonating rather spectacularly! No photos as I was sitting a little too far away and the phone wouldn't have done anything for it.

I'm sorry I didn't get any pics or video because I'm always slack-jawed in awe while it flies, but did I mention the V-1 replica?

That's a reproduction PzKpfw IV made by Weta, apparently. The "Hanomag" can't be an original SdKfz 251, though. That's a modified OT-810. They did a good job, but that running gear is distinctive.

Cheers,

Logan

Thanks Zac. Looking at it with those "tank riders" it looks slightly undersize ? Probably just the fact that in 100 years the guys have just got bigger. I've seen the ones at the Tank Museum at Bovington and am just filled with admiration for their crews.

New Zealand seems to be the land of the replica  ;) Must go some day for a tour

Thanks Logan, I don't know German armour and was going by the commentary.

Chris - I think they're 1:1. One thing that's surprised me about tanks after building a few kits is just how small they all are.

Also, on the subject of replicas: yeah you do! The replicas built by TVAL (http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/) have new-built engines - only one of these replicas, the Snipe with Bentley rotary, made the trip to Omaka this time. They have an increasing amount of airworthy WW1 originals, too. Any trip to NZ should be timed to coincide with one of TVAL's summer flying weekends.

Ta. Yup some can be very small, almost tankette size, especially in the 20/30's. Although you then get some of the massive "land battleship" types which must have needed half the nations armoured corps personnel to man them  ;)

RIAT 17 on the Friday, so only a the warm up acts and the "canvas" wasn't very kind to the displays but hopefully Ive got something interesting in amongst the dross. Certainly felt privileged to see the Reds and Thunderbirds in formation!

I should have some pics tomorrow as Fifi the B-29 is at the Kankakee County Airport through Sunday. If you live in the area it will be worth the trip. She is on the way to Oskosh, Wisconsin for the big airshow there.

Great day at Kankakee County Airport! Watched the B-25, C-45, Stearman and T-6 give rides. Extra attraction was the P-51 that arrived around noon. I took lots of pics and a couple of videos. Some came out pretty good, see what you think.
Here is the link to the album.

Looks like R2D2 is flying the P-51! This shot was purely by accident.

Best part of the day was seeing a former B-25 crew chief get out of his wheel chair and climb up the ladder into the B-25. I thought he was going to climb all the way into the cockpit the way he was going. It was like he went back in time.

Really nice pics, nice sunny day too.  I've seen that C-45 a few times at airshows. Last time was down in Yuma.

I used to see, and hear, Huns flying out of Alconbury and other USAF bases over here. When they lit up the burners there was a big BOOOOM to start with and then what can best be described as a 'tearing fabric' sounds they vanished into the distance. Very impressive.

I've not seen an F-100 fly yet, but a few years ago I did see a pair of F-104's flying. They too had a very distinctive sound to their engines ---

And for sure Robert, come on down ! The last few weeks of summer is a good time. We have Thunder over Michigan coming up and then the CNE. The London show is looking to be a good one as well. We've got plenty of room in the shack and it makes a good Home Base being pretty central to Toronto, Trenton, Borden, and MI and Ohio.

Oh yes, the 104 sounds like nothing else on earth, a deep howling, groaning, whistling sound that goes right through you at the correct speed. Which is around 500 kts IIRC. We used to see the Belgian Air Force 'Slivers' team in the UK quite a bit in the 70s and those guys knew EXACTLY the speed to generate the '104 Howl'.

Some people say it's like the Hunter's 'Blue Note' but it's more unearthly and not as pure musically as a Hunter.

We used to get the Canadian 104s that were based in Europe here at Prestwick and when they broke into the circuit, which put them over where I used to live, you certainly got that howl.
Prior to them it had been Sabres and CF-100s, but no they did not sound the same.

Went to Biggin Hill on Sunday and the Belgian F-16 display brought back great memories of shows in the 90s. That pulsing screech, the sheer sense of speed, the agilty

The Eurofighter Typhoon followed it and it seemed pedestrian in comparison. There wasn't that sense of elan. It was like a family coupe versus a Formula One racer. Still bloody noisy though!

I had a wonderful day at Shuttleworth yesterday. It's a fantastic site, the sun is behind you so you get a clear view of the runway, the machines are superb and the commentators not only knew their stuff but also when to keep quiet.

I arrived at 2pm, flying started at 6pm so I had loads of time to explore the museum / hangars with their old cars and bikes and magnificent flying machines. On the field they had a circle of aircraft and encouraged you to walk up amongst them. This tells you that this is a living museum where they trust you with their kit. No raucous funfair, no tacky market stalls, no hordes of screaming brats and sunburnt parents. Shuttleworth is a show with class and style, a genteel and civilised aviation event.

When I arrived there were various aircraft flying over to other airshows and the first was a P-47 Thunderbolt from Sywell heading to the Midlands Air Festival. New to the UK scene this year you cant mistake the invasion stripes, square wings, big radial engine and jug shape http://vintageaviationecho.com/thunderbolt-returns-to-uk-airshow-scene/
Pretty sure off in the distance was a Spitfire escorting a Blenheim, also going to the Midlands show.
Shuttleworths own Percival Provost was making several short flights. The unusual camo scheme confused me slightly but she was an ex-Oman bird http://www.shuttleworth.org/collection/percivalprovost/

Opening the show was Lancaster PA474 with 3 flybys in the low afternoon sunshine. Shuttleworth now have a Spitfire Vc with their Sea Hurricane and they did a thrilling display. Plenty of opportunity to get well-lit photos.
There was a fun barnstorming session with the Miles Magister, Tiger Moth Piper, Super Cub and RCAF Chipmunk competing to pop helium balloons, drop flour bombs on a target and "fly the limbo" under a low rope on poles. Just like they did at 1930s airshows and it brought a sense of competition and fun to the evening.

The two RAF trainers showed off their stuff, the Avro Tutor and the Hawker Tomtit.
Mew Gull and DH.88 Comet zoomed past several times as tribute to the glory days of air races.

At the very end we had the oldest flying aircraft in the world, the Deperdussin 1910 which reached the heady heights of maybe 8ft in a straight line! http://www.shuttleworth.org/collection/deperdussin/
Behind that was the oldest flying British aircraft, the 1912 Blackburn Monoplane http://www.shuttleworth.org/collection/blackburnmonoplane/

I strongly recommend a day out here at one of their Evening Airshows. Bring a picnic, sit back and relax.

Shuttleworth Fly Navy Airshow, one of the best Ive been too. There was a great line up, all with a naval flavour. I took far too many photos, I need to learn some trigger discipline it seems. But these are the ones that came out ok.

A few of the aircraft at the FlyWheel event at RAF Bicester over last weekend.

Loads more pics to come, mostly cars, but some armour too.

A folded Gypsy Moth. It took a stupidly short time to 'un-fold' it, maybe 2 minutes!

A Leopard Moth, my fave for sure. What a wonderful looking 'period' aircraft.

A P-51D, but you probably knew that...

A replica SE5A, but superbly done, as were all the replicas there.

A replica BE2C for crying out loud! I never knew an aircraft fly so slow and still stay airborne!

A DC3, but you may have known that too....

A beautiful Dragonfly. It was close run thing between this and the Leopard Moth.

A replica Fokker Dr1.

You were lucky to see the "Edwardians" fly - I've been to Shuttleworth several times in recent years and it's always been to breezy for them to fly, Here's hoping the weather is settled for the Flying Proms on 18th August

I only saw the BE2C and the Dr1 fly, but the others did later in the day apparently. It wasn't very breezy at all, which made a change from recent days.

I've never seen a Gypsy Moth with its wings folded before, to be honest I sort of thought they could be, but wasn't sure

I sure did, but it was SO hot I had to give up just past lunchtime. And I took over 100 pics of the cars too, but I promise not to post all of them.  ;D

Somewhat delayed by the sheer number of photos I spammed but here is what I got from the Friday at RIAT this year. Have to say I was incredibly impressed with the Italian national display team. I thought they made everyone else (reds included) look rather ordinary. Here is a small selection:

Back on the 21st and 22nd of July, me and mrs kitnut went up to Cold Lake to see the bi-annual airshow. The star of the show was the F-22's, one flying each day. Our plan was to walk the static on the Saturday, and sit back and watch the flying on the Sunday. It didn't quite go to plan though, Saturday was quite warm even if it was windy. Nice day to walk around and look at everything on display. Sunday though we woke up to miserable weather, raining, windy as heck, and a cold wind blowing off the lake (there's a reason the town is called Cold Lake  ;) ). It was so cold that mrs kitnut said she needed to get a toque where we eventually found some being sold by the National Guard crew from Oregon from under their F-15. The flying was delayed by almost two hours and even the para-jumpers which start off the show took off in their C-130J, it soon disappeared into the muck only a few hundred feet off the ground. They didn't jump --- and soon came back down in the Herc'. So after sitting around and getting wet, we decided it wasn't much fun so we left early and drove home (about 6 hours drive).

Anyway here's some pics of the Saturday walk around.

Soon as we cleared the security tents, we met up with this C-5M. And as I'm planning on building one of my 1/72 C-5 kits as an 'M', took special notice of some of it's features. And after walking through it I noticed it doesn't have an over-head crane.

Some really good shots there mate, many thanks

The finish on the F-22 is quite intriguing the way it reflects light and changes "colour". Be a pig to replicate. you'd almost have to have a label saying that the aircraft was modeled at this time of day, facing this direction, at this location and in these lighting conditions  ;)

Thanks guys, it was a pretty good show even though we left early on the Sunday because of the weather and didn't get to see the full flying schedule.  But we did see the F-22 flying on the Saturday, we had left the show to go book in at our motel and then went to a restaurant which was about a mile away from the airfield. The flying display was being held in between the two. The F-22 put on a display like something I've never seen before, some of the maneuvers it was doing rivaled the aerobatic plane you can see in the pic of the T-33. One maneuver was particularly spectacular,  it was fly quite low to the ground, then it nosed up sharply and went vertical for a short distance, then it nosed down horizontally and flew level (right side up BTW), then nosed up vertically again. The flight path was like how you would draw a couple of steps from in the side view. Never ever seen an aircraft do that before, or in one as large as the F-22 is ---

After it had done it's display, it then flew around in formation with the P-51D Mustang which is part of their Heritage Flight. I thought I had taken a pic of the P-51, but I can't find it ---  :banghead:

As I said in the other post I was keeping an eye on what was flying on the Saturday. A flight of ten aircraft consisting of CF-188's and CT-155's put on quite the show, lots of pyrotechnics --- then a flight of a F-16, a F-15 and a F-18 flew all sorts of maneuvers at low level, followed by the aerobatic plane. I almost forgot to mention that the Snowbirds were there too, only I didn't get to see them fly at all.

Here's a couple of pics I forgot, they were on the main drag into Cold Lake, just as you turned onto the road that went to the base. There was some others right outside the gate too, but I wasn't able to get any pics of them.

Apologies for the size even though the photo hosting did resize them, but just right click on a pic to see all of it. I noticed that once you have the pic so you can see it full size and then use the scroll button, it will scoll through all the pics I've posted.

This Saturday and Sunday just passed meant that I got no modelling done at all. Why? The Scottish International Airshow. The flying display takes place just two miles south of where we live, so it would be rude to not go.
This year the weather was somewhat variable ranging from bright sunshine to rain, I think the only thing we did not get was a tropical revolving storm!
Over all it was a good two days with lots of people having a lot of fun, and the vendors taking a lot of money.
My lack of mobility meant that I could not go and wander round the ground exhibits (whew!) but SWMBO went for a stroll and reported that the fun fair seamed to better than previous years.

The flying program was in the main, POOR. OK the items were good but there were far too many gaps in the display with no information being provided as to what was going on.

Anyway here are a few photos out of the 270+ that I took.

I think he's just lining up for the bomb run in that pic actually.  ;D

They planned to have a Catalina at the Seawings 2000 event in the summer of 2000, and it was at Fairford the previous weekend, and it was open for visitors! I climbed aboard and was amazed how big it was inside, very wide indeed. Sadly the very next day it crashed on landing in Southampton Water, killing the Mayor of Southampton amongst others.  :-\

I'm not sure if the one in your pic is the same aircraft Jim, I know they recovered and re-built it, but I don't know the reggies.

Post by: Caveman on July 24, 2019, 12:48:19 AM
Hello all.

I managed to get to the Friday RIAT show again this year, I think that makes it 5 years in a row now! This year was certainly the least favourable for aircraft flying and nice photos however. But, I did get to see the Spanish EAV-8B strut its stuff which was great. The A400M and Chinook also managed to put in some performances but essentially that was it for flying displays. We did manage to get single flybys from some others, notably UK F35B to close out the show. Anyway, enough guff, here are some plane phots for you.

Last weekend was a wet and windy race day at Old Warden. I was slightly relieved to see that the rain was going to abate but hadn't considered the wind conditions, which unfortunately grounded most of the display. But better a plane that you can fly tomorrow...

Heres a short selection of what I have processed so far - the short display didn't seem to curtail my trigger finger it seems

Thanks gents. The Railton snuck in after the main car parade had finished. It caught a few people off guard as the announcer said that there would be a break for lunch. 5 minutes later, once the flight line had thinned, out it roared.

I managed to get some of the Hurri and T-51 phots processed this morning, so here are a few more (including shiny silver ones)

I think it had an issue with the tail wheel. It didn't seem to want to lock up. Pilot pulled out of the display and cycled the landing gear. It seemed to do the trick but after a few more passes it had dropped down again.

I'd guess there was a hydraulics issue with the Mustang's tail wheel, they were designed to drop down when pressure was lost (main gear had to be pumped down, or you hoped it dropped into place when "gear down" was selected for full loss of hydraulics).

Remember seeing some footage (many, many years ago) of a Mustang coming in to land after escorting a bombing raid & as it approached you saw it dip & kick up again several times. Must have worked because it landed on its wheels but the aft fuselage was covered in hydraulic fluid.

I think it's an ongoing problem, there were some photos a few weeks ago I saw on a forum that had a Mustang flying with it's tail wheel down. I can't say for sure it's the same aircraft though, 'cause I can't find the pic right now.

Thunder Over Michigan was phenomenal this year ! 7 Mustangs, 11 Corsair. Plua 2 B-25s, a B-17, plus a range of newer stuff. One of the highlights was also the Cobra and Huey rides. I didn't go on one, but watching and hearing them all day was a treat enough !

I went to the Shuttleworth Collection's evening drive in airshow last week - "A Scurry of Chipmunks". Its the first airshow that I've attended since the UK locked down. The lighting and weather were poor but it was a really fun show and well managed given the current restrictions. There were a fair few weather related scrubs, nothing older than 1930's flew, but that is the risk you take when going to see such old aircraft perform. Below is a selection and a link to the rest of the album if you are interested:

Very kind Kit. I'm really glad that Shuttleworth found a COVID compatible format to hold airshows. But the drive in format meant that I was a fair way back from the flight line fence. Hopefully we'll be able to get back to the pre COVID format because one of the great joys of shuttleworth is that you could be close enough to smell the displays!

Ok, not strictly an airshow but the Sunday of last weekend's Shuttleworth Race Day did include this little beauty doing a quick beat up before departing home again.

The Napier Railton still holds the track speed record for Brooklands and was used for early jet fighter brake 'chute trials.

Given how fast it can go I always feel the rear view mirror is somewhat redundant!  But it's necessary to facilitate road worthiness.

Airbourne Rememberance 2021

In order to remember the anniversary of operation Market Garden in 1944 every year there are parachute droppings at the heath at Ginkel near Arnhem in the Netherlands on the third weekend of September.
Here are some pictures I took this year.

Thanks for those Tom

I've been to Arnhem a few times, but never during the remembrance ceremonies. First time I went was my first trip abroad. I was 10 or 11 and a mate at primary schools mum was Dutch. I later found out she was from Nijmegen and his father had met her during the liberation. I went over with them during the Easter break. Been back a few times since and it still sends a shiver down my spine.

Lest we forget

WRT the Paras, are those the standard chutes, or do they use 'period' style (round) ones as part of the tribute display?

The plain green ones in pic 1 might be the older T-10 system used by the US Army. The white lined ones in pic 3 look like the current US Army T-11 parachutes as seen on this video:

The 2nd picture is a RNAF C-130 so they must be Royal Netherlands Army Paras using MC1 parachutes.

When I returned to the UK in 2002, I went to the Great Steam Fair in Dorset. Getting there was through small country roads and extremely slow going, as most of the steam engines (plus their trailers/caravans) got there under their own steam (pun intended)

I thought modern Paras had gone away from the round chutes, for control reasons. Happy to be re-educated.

I'm gradually going through a zillion old photos and slides and trying to digitise them, a rather slow and ultimately soul destroying task. However I've recently found a couple of boxes of slides from Biggin Hill Airshows in 1965, 66 & 67. I shall see if there are any interesting or unusual ones and get them done first so I can post them here.

I've found a few companies who will digitise slides, it's not cheap, but I understand why, so I may use them for the important family ones.

If you have a slide projector I'd think you could use a smart phone or better yet a camera on a tripod mount and digitize them yourself. Maybe get the important family ones done professionally but the rest should be ok. We filmed the old 8mm with a camcorder years ago. Time to try it again with a modern phone or my digital SLR.

I have a hand held slide viewer which was probably bought in the 60's and still works  , but I bought a piece of kit that digitises slides and negatives a year or so back, but it's a slow process simply because you can only add 3 slides at a time to the holder and each one needs to be digitised separately. So load, push, press button, push, press button, push, press button, unload, load etc  :sleepy:

Middle Wallop, Wheels and Wings - more of a fly in than an airshow so mostly pics of things taxiing but there were a few guest flypasts and I did manage to get a few airborne phots.

Good to see the Beagle Husky is back in her natural scheme. Red, white & light aircraft grey.

I flew in her twice out of Cambridge as a cadet in the 80's.
