Title: ROCAF Commonwealth Boomerang
Post by: The Rat on January 13, 2019, 09:36:31 PM
Mentioned this somewhere else on this site, but here's where I'll put the rest of it. The Airfix 1/72nd model has been sitting unfinished for about 20 years, so I recently decided to get it done. It had just about everything but paint, so it shouldn't take long, right?

Yeah, right.  :banghead:

Decided that it would be interesting to see them sold to China after WWII, so I was in need of decals. No chance anyone does any in 1/72 (or so I thought) so I'll have a go at making my own. Well, didn't turn out too bad, so lets print them and apply them, after slapping on a two-tone green scheme, because MFM! Um, yeah, not a great idea after all. The first one, a roundel applied to the fuselage, curled up around the edges, and trying to get it to lay flat with copious amounts of Micro Sol caused it to stretch and go all out of shape. %&@$*!!! Scraped off the slimy gunk that it had turned into and the white base stayed behind. No big deal, it will ensure that none of the green shows through with the next application. I took a suggestion I found on-line and tried applying the next ones with a 50/50 solution of white glue and water - still no joy. Didn't curl as much, but they still seem to have saucers in their family history.

Then, while searching for other info on ROCAF aircraft, a Google image search turned up models of the venerable P-40 with ROCAF decals. Academy, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?! Now I'm wavering between going with what I have or trying to locate an Academy P-40 with the decals I want. Decisions, decisions...

Just went aGooglin' for Boomerang pictures, in case I wanted to add a bit more detail for accuracy. Let's check the radio aerial wires... HOLY CRUD! Damned thing looks like it's held together with wires. They're everywhere! Might not bother with adding that much stretched sprue. Masochism ain't the way I roll.

Oh, and about those decals I printed - could someone explain this to me? How in the name of the gods of modeling does blue manage to bleed red? It don't make no sense, none at all. But there it is for all to see, distinct red bleeding from blue ink.

Hoping the boss sends me on runs close to various well stocked hobby shops so that I can scout for Academy P-40s. And I've got money that says I won't find any with the ROCAF decals.  :banghead:

Makes a guy want to go back to building OOB! Apparently there was a mix of ink colors in the blue you were using. Unavoidable using computer printers.

I don't know if you've heard of O'Toole's Law?

O'Toole's Law simply states "Murphy was an optimist!"

Just picked the Academy 1/72nd P-40, from Wheels & Wings Hobbies in Toronto, because I needed better ROCAF decals than the ones I tried to print myself. At $7.95 I would say that's a pretty good price. So this project is back on the assembly line.
