I didn't see Precious Metal when I went to the races in '96 (I think), but it was an experience to say the least.

They did put Griffons in the Mk.8 though Kit, prototype for what went on to be the Mk.XIV (that's according to the Morgan/Shacklady book)

Well actually -- no!  the Mk.XII's evolved from the Mk.IV prototype which was the first Griffon engined Spitfire, the Mk.IV was used to make the first Mk.XII. Also the Mk.XV.
