A new project with two kits of the old Revell B17 , produced for more than 20 years and easy to find here in Germany .

I try to keep the fine molded rivets of the skin, so the standard procedure of sheet , putty and sanding seems not the right way . Kit Nr.2 will spend the needed parts for the build . That needs much time of cutting and sanding too ...
Mockup with fins

Both sides closed . The tail is also ready .

I am into the construction of the Central Drive ( CD , with 4 engines = XCD ) .
Not so easy to decide that design .
I wanna have rear central props with pneumatic transmission from the original engines .
Some of the glass parts give me trouble, they should be glued from the INSIDE !??
RADICAL plastic surgery there! Most impressive.
looking very good, great rear wing configuration

It is real a very nice job to do , makes fun . You should try that technique....
Looking interesting. ;)
Sort of an American Vickers Type C?

Yes , there are some similar designs made before, I try to make some inventions at the central tail end and the drive system . It would become a multi centre prop turbine system or something like that . Today evening I will take the laptop and Corel Draw to work on the design , and also on the way to realise the thing in model reality with plastic
Next show will be in 6 weeks near Bielefeld / Germany , that is my finish line for that project .
Another project still running is the music performance with Lady K. , we plan a live gig around July 2024 ,
that will take a lot of my time to work on .
Wow!
Love it!
That is drastic remodeling of the B-17. Cool.
Drastic is nice, thank you for that !!
π
Wing bases are in place this evening .
Next step are the wings and everything inside the fuselage before both sides come together .
That means also the new front wheel should be done , i want to build it with wheels out, standing on display or Diorama .

IMG_20240121_000005658.jpg
some serious work there, looking good so far
Following....came across the same idea some years ago an the trick is in getting the wing not too far to the rear.
Anyway, it's looking good so far. Keep going!
David aka 63CPE
As your moveing the wings towards the rear of the fuselage perhaps the fuselage could also be deepened towards the rear, you would likely need the structural strength there anyway.
Gondor
Dear Gondor , the last part of the fuselage should become in 4-5 turning sections to rotate with the props , so i keep it small and in round shape . The section with the wings is realy strong , that looks very realistic to me  .
I have added some air intake on every wing , that will give the needed air for the pressurised transmission .

Thanks to my very old dad, he gifted me at Christmas with a nice collection of very old and fine files in top quality , some of them are 80 years old ( my grandfather was a high qualified metal worker in germany ) . It is such a pleasure to work with vintage tools like that ! I would not have done that so good with the modern stuff i used last year .
IMG_20240121_143215145.jpg
Glas parts must be fixed from the inside , and some of them are a miracle to me !!???
IMG_20240121_143149105.jpg
i may be preaching to the choir here, but please please please get some handles on the Tangs of those files , the memory of just hearing tales of the stab wound they can inflict if your unlucky is something id rather not have happen..
aside from that its looking impressive still.

Haha, i use them only for plastic , not very dangerous without full force like metal work...
My dad asked me the same this morning on the phone, but i prefer them naked, feels better for me to handle .
Yesterday i spend the first little color on the wing intakes and put the wings together .
Now i can work on many different things the same time and i can SEE a plane like thing βΊοΈ.

My maternal grandfather was a Shipwright and I have some of his old woodworking tools, and yes there is something about using them.
Day 9.
Come together ... Check the Silhouette with engines mounted .
Looks good for me . Lot of fine sanding .
IMG_20240123_202950.jpg
Lots of work going into this one ! Very nice. Looking forward to seeing more.
Unfortunately the wing bases are not 100% correct in place , i have to ad 1,5 mm sheet to push the wings in the right angle .
IMG_20240122_150632.jpg
I have also found two bigger wheels for the rear gear and build a nice tail / centre Spinner from a rocket part and a tank wheel .
For the coming front wheel i can use the standard main wheels . Both π .
I'm loving this, it looks so cool!
Today a bit tired and lazy ...
Miss Killnoizer had the nice idea to complete this build and take it to the next show unpainted .
Not a bad Idea π .
I will close the last gaps this evening , the surface of the hull is very nice to touch , the zillions of little rivets feel good π .

A great idea, it shows the average viewer how it's all done.
Many years ago, in the mid 70s, I built an RW RAF Spitfire Mk XII using parts from a FROG Mk XIV, an Airfix Mk V, a Revell Mk 1 and something else too, and for many years we had it on our club stand at shows without being painted just to show people what a 'conversion' was. ;D Eventually I painted the underside, and many MANY years later I painted the top as well.
Some very impressive work here.
Love it! A lesson in whiffing surgery!

Very much so

I get that with my big wing TSR2 PR. Everyone asks what the wings are off, and I tell them it's actually 2 sets of TSR wings with lots of filler bits.....
... So that is the way to go , maybe i can ad a boneyard with the unused parts of the second Kit
And i want to use cutted masks for the signs and paint, no decals , to keep the surface .
I can ad some main signs without any basic paint , that's a easy job , my wife can cut that in the next room at home machine controlled π .
The rear spinner is in place, the last bits in the hull, not much to do before the wings come on .
The rear end should be done , i have to make fine lines for the props, that would be done much better without the mighty wings on it .
IMG_20240125_105814143.jpgIMG_20240125_093610960.jpgIMG_20240125_105726305.jpgIMG_20240125_093641371.jpg
Nice work noizey.
I'm very impressed with the accuracy of your cuts to match the various parts up. Do you use any special technique to do that? I'm darned if I could do it that well. :-\
Dear PR19 , and Zenrat , Kerick and Buzzbomb , thank you very much
That cutting and sanding needs only MUCH time and endurance, and a sharp eye... Things i needed in my original work over 40 years so much . But how much work would it be to do that conversion with sheet and putty ?
This is the absolut last part to close the tailwheel bay :
IMG_20240125_172059202.jpg
IMG_20240125_172450485.jpg
It is not absolut perfect , but enough π
The very old vintage files from my Grandfather and dad are the best tools for that . They are super sharp and give a amazing smooth result , i have used No sanding paper for the complete Work, only for the wing bases to get the perfect fit:
IMG_20240120_220006054.jpgIMG_20240120_232302428.jpg
The Boneyard .
IMG_20240125_174225677_HDR_AE.jpg
I bought the two kits each from 15-19β¬ , that is a good Investment for the fun .
And i have a good pair of 4 engine wings left to build another STRONG Ju188 , or maybe a He111 ?
AMAZING work there, MOST impressive. :drink:
I made a construction of the props, i think this is the thing to come ..
Each blade around 8x12 mm , 12 pcs. per section .
It is just a short simulation , not 100% in measure ( but very near at the real size ) .
Front view of the first and the last rotator .
IMG_20240125_212252.jpg
Later this evening i cutted the lines of the rotators and put a little bit black color in .
IMG_20240125_222513.jpg
Next step is maybe building a tool from metal tubes to shape the blades with heat.
I think a 1" inch tube fits perfect into 1 1/8 inch tube , this could maybe solve the problem .
Wow. That's summing up what I'm thinking. So cool !
This caught me by surprise! I was thinking you were going to use the engines on the wings in the usual way. Will they be contra-rotating?
First idea was the system like a jet engine, plus a housing over it i think that is all the same direction ? But with a cover you cant see the blades ...
And i found no way to build a good housing .
So i came to this , and i believe contra rotating is the right way , what do you think ?
The various versions of the B-17 also had a Boeing factory Model 299 codes:
299B (YB-17, Y1B-17)
299F (Y1B-17A)
299M (B-17B, originally designated 299E)
299H (B-17C, B-17D)
299-O (B-17E/F/G, also shown as 299O)
299-Z (Two aircraft converted as testbeds, also shown as 299Z)
299AB (TWA B-17G conversion)
Perhaps Model 299XCD. ;)
Thank you, good idea with the test number .
Yesterday night i spend some hours more and started the blades. They need around 75 cm of cutted and shaped material ( 30" ) .
I made the first step with a toaster , a bottle and a cardboard , than cut it in 8 mm lines and pre shaped the edges with a knife , went okay.

IMG_20240126_001031543.jpg
Impressive conversion work there - I think I would have given up and filled and sanded all the rivets off.
I agree, there's nothing like a good, sharp file. <_<
And thank you for the Toaster idea - much, much easier and safer than using other sources of heat for softening plastic for moulding!

I'll second that
Impressve work indeed. And the tail propellers caught me absolutely off-guard. I would never have thought of this.
Yeah, I thought initially that it was a conventional (?!) rear-winged-but-still-Radial-powered-thingy.
Under construction !

Looks like you are building a jet engine! Cool!
I suppose the brown disk is to protect the blades during assembly and to help align them , will not be a permanent feature?
Quote from: loupgarou on January 27, 2024, 12:19:55 AMI suppose the brown disk is to protect the blades during assembly and to help align them , will not be a permanent feature?
Correct , it is just a tool with the correct angle for each blade . It must be cutted today to get it off .
Looks like a WWII version of the Unducted-fan engine that they tried on an MD-80 in the 80s.
Wow ! That is some really excellent work !
It is a bit difficult to take a pic of the white blades , but in real it looks very impressive.
Was a big step in the build , i am happy to continue with the wings and landing gear .
And i want to make some experiments with a silver washing , just a light shine to keep the parts visible .

12 teeth to make for each round, every section with a little different shape .
IMG_20240127_155823.jpg
So cool! π
yowza that something else :o
Murphy visited me yesterday :banghead:
I have to ad lot of weight into the nose section because the tail is to heavy with the 60 blades .
I am not amused ! There is not much place there and every hole is closed !
I have to put some VA washers into the canards and glue them very strong .
Can you place a spar through the fuselage yet to support the canards?
Incredible looking engine
Quote from: kerick on January 28, 2024, 10:00:38 AMCan you place a spar through the fuselage yet to support the canards?
To much work ... I have placed some metall parts in the Cockpit , and the canards will be glued very strong, No problem, i pay very much attention for the connection of the parts all the time .

Landing gear is also ready done , and a transport Box made to measure for the transport next Weekend .
IMG_20240128_175257848.jpg
Looks great!
It looks like a sci-fi drilling machine for travelling underground.
These parts are the weekend job, a lot of sanding and shaping to get ready .

Looks evil that thing i think π

Whatever the descriptor... it is a serious bit of work. Love it
How did the other modellers take to it?
They like it real , some on the amused side, but most of them are very amazed about that !
Yesterday i got one of them as a student at my side, converting his Trojan Prop Trainer into a jet  . That was very funny .

Good job! The subversion continues!
What is very strange for me is that " i would NEVER had a idea like that + how do you do this " Chorus which comes anytime again .
What is in their heads ?
Nice comment from the lovely chief of the crew ( greets to Werner  ) :
Gerrit is watching something different in the kits ... Yes π
But many buddys supported me with kits and parts from their stash , super friendly .
And that's what good model clubs are all about!
Looking the business!
The build is almost done , I have to decide what kind of paint I wanna do ...
I finished two other small builds in one week .

DANKE SEHRRRR !!
That thing will become a white paint next week , like a Nasa or X- Project Plane . I think about keeping the underside in silver ?
Yup that's it !!!
Herr Noizer's build has given me the excuse to get off my arse and build my version of this sort of B-17.
I've had pics for yrs of other builders ideas and there all very similar.
Killnoizer mate yours is wayyyy above their ideas and I love that π
Mine will have 4 engines ..probably gas turbines ..if I can make em that is..it's 48th after all..next step is scoring some 48th B-29 propellers ;D
Phill, there are a couple of free downloadable and printable Hamilton Standard props out there, easily scalable.
Somewhere to do the printing will still be an issue, tho.
If you're interested, I can flick you the links.
Edit: I forgot to say, they're 4-bladed ones.
I bought a can of WHITE today but it was not right . Natural white isn't the way i want it .
Try to get signal white on friday at the shop and went forward than . The masking Job for that is a lot of work.
IMG_20240213_215149.jpg
After a hard week , a exploded clutch at the Truck on the highway and other trouble i come back to the modelbench and pushed the signal white button
And keep it silver on the underside .

That looks very NASA stylish ...
Ooooh so nice ! She's really looking good now !
Now you need some NACA decals
... i had a complete set of the NCC 1701 decals. But i wanna do a plotted masking + paint job without decals . The endless rivets and decals are not so good together, but maybe I have to check that .
A veritable 'tour de force' of masking there! :o
Yes , and I don't like that job in THIS SIZE , that's too much .
Unfortunately another , well known , problem happened .
The CARPET MONSTER was here .
All remaining clear parts of TWO kits where lost , i have spend two hours today for searching in every little box without any result . So I interrupt this build and think about some other new builds , as we know the lost parts will come back one day in an completely unexpected way and smile at you
Maybe I continue a bit of washing and chipping at the club meeting this week , and try too keep cool .
The next idea is just to buy a third kit of that kind and get the parts plus another decal version .
There .... And back again.
Mrs. Killnoizer is working sometimes on her B1 Lancer project , and the missing parts were hidden in that Box . I'm not shure how to continue the B17 , for a between and final clear coat i have to mask the Windows again :banghead: :banghead:
IMG_20240224_081553.jpg
But today the Land Rover need some attention and welding in the work shop , so i went dirty today

My jaw is on the floor. This is nuts in the best way!
Please continue this wonderful project as it's much too cool to not see finished!
Thank you so much , I hope to find some time , I got many other things to do ... the first washing went not really nice , I think about cleaning the thing for another try .
