Here are the draft rules for the In Memoriam GB
Rules for the In Memoriam GB
1. The In Memoriam GB begins 00:01 1st July 2024 and ends 23:59 30th September 2024 (all times local). An extension may/may not be considered/granted according to demand,
2. Physical models of any scale, profiles, and/or stories are eligible, but the subject must be a whiff that remembers Robert (Kitnut617) or Tophe.
Your whiff must in some way encompass one or more of the ideas and themes that the dear departed's whiffs exhibited.
In the case of Robert these were 40's through 70's US, British and Canadian aircraft. He had a particular interest in incorporating different engines, especially some of those powerful "piston" engines in development at the end of the war, but didn't exclusively focus on that.
Tophe on the other hand drew and built asymmetry, twin and multi-boomers, gliders or esoteric/imaginary/as yet undiscovered power plants, cartoon/deformed shapes, and seaplanes. He particularly liked Mustangs and F16s, often merging them with other aircraft. He painted all his builds Sky Blue and you may wish to do the same.
Tophe was a pacifist so anything produced in his name must be unarmed. This is not negotiable.
If you wish to remember both Robert and Tophe together in one entry then you may do so, but the no weapons thing still applies.
Entries can be as simple or as complex as you wish. If in doubt as to what is included in the GB then please PM the Moderators.
3. You may build, draw or write as many entries as you like (good luck!). The posting of in-progress pictures is encouraged as always. If you are unsure as to how to post pictures of your build on site then please contact Narses2 by Personal Message and he will go through it with you.
When posting your finished models in the Finished Builds Thread can you try and stick as closely as possible to the following format;
Title : By (entrants user name) : a brief description backstory/explanation (100 characters or so) : and a maximum of three pictures with a link to the build/progress thread. This will also apply to profiles/images.
Where members have written a story for their GB entry, they should post it in the Finished Builds Thread as normal.
Can members also refrain from posting any comments regarding entries within the Finished Builds Thread but use the link to the main build/progress thread page for these. This makes the Moderators task when it comes to organising the poll much simpler.
4. Preparation work is allowed prior to the start of the GB but is limited to thinking, removal and cleaning up of parts from sprues, casting blocks or cutting out vacform parts from their backing sheet, even designing and printing your own decals. The design and printing of 3D parts is also allowed, but no assembly. Anything involving modification of parts, test fitting, pre-painting and actual assembly is not allowed prior to the start of the GB, but see Rule 5 below.
While not compulsory we do like to see a picture of "The Beginning". A pile of parts and kit boxes on your bench, a clean sheet of paper and a sharpened pencil, or your big brain throbbing with inspiration for example.
5. Part-started models may be used purely at the discretion of the Moderators providing they are not too close to being finished, and this will be the Moderators decision. You must send pictures of the model you intend to use in the GB, along with a rough idea of what your plans for it are via a PM and their decision will be final. However, they must have been started prior to the current GB Season's themes being announced. We will be relying on the integrity of the membership to uphold this rule. If using a part started kit then this should be clearly stated at the beginning of your build thread.
Scrapped models that have been reduced to component parts or sections can be used, although you should check with the Moderators if you are not sure about the eligibility of those you intend to use. You can also use a completed sub-assembly taken from a kit which may have been previously assembled and which the whiffer wants to build into their GB entry. If in doubt, then as usual contact the Moderators with as much information as possible.
6. Nothing to see here. Move along please.
7. Moderators are zenrat and McColm. Thank you, gentlemen.
8. The completed entries thread will be locked at the end of the GB and only those items posted prior to it being locked will be eligible for the vote. shortly afterwards the polls will be set up.
Unlike all other GBs this one will have Two Polls. One poll for entries remembering Tophe, and a second poll for entries remembering Robert. There will be two winners and no losers.
If an entry remembers both Tophe and Robert it will be entered in both polls. If it wins both polls, so mote it be.
The number of votes per forum member for each poll will be based upon a ratio of one vote per three entries, rounded up or down to the nearest whole number.
In the event of a tie in either poll there will be no run-off. We will simply have a joint first place and then a third place (no second) this is to preserve the three into the Whiffies as detailed in Rule 9. Similarly, a three way tie will mean there is no second and third. (Please don't ask me about a four way tie !)
9. The first three placed entries in each of the Group Build polls will automatically be nominated for a Whiffy in the specific Group Build Class.
Nice and clear, Chris - many thanks for drafting them.

I have two ideas - everything for one of them, plus the bits needed to convert something else (but don't have the 'something' (yet)).
Oh the Tophe Mustang vibe has kicked lads .
Two engines..two booms ..and pure long distance racing plane ;D

Nothing to do with me lads.
Thank Mr Zenrat  , I'm purely the mesenger
I'll add that Robert had a particular interest in contraprops, push-pull powerplants and floatplanes/flying boats. He also stretched into the modern era too, especially with his powerplant musings.
I've just remembered, Robert also had a thing for large 1/72 multimedia kits. I don't remember seeing any built but he had quite a few 1/72 airliner and transports, including a 747 and C-5..
And he did some hybrids too, like a high wing A-310 freighter in 1/72. I did some decals for him for that one.
But ALL his models were 1/72, weren't they?
I think he dabbled with 1/144 but the vast majority were 1/72.
Thanks for the extra background Mossie
I find the (long) list of rules & addenda rather amusing, given Tophe's disdain for any form of regulation. ;D ;)

I like to think he'd be happy about the weapons ban.
He would have been VERY happy about the weapons ban.
Only talked with him a few times, but he was such a nice guy. I still miss him to, his brain/imagination was so fertile.

Normally I like weapons on everything...guns..bombs and so on but this is something I'm gonna enjoy..something sleak and fast and since I'm going with a Mustang with a push pull engine set up and after reading what Mossie mentioned that Robert liked that too it seems now im building a plane with the likes of both of our missing friends...very cool ð ð
I have ideas for a Tophe-esque ship model, not certain where to go with it yet.
Hi all
Getting the bits together at the moment,.
I'm going to attempt two builds, the first will be a push-me-pull-you Spitfire, the second will be a flying wing Zero.
Both are Tophe creations but the Zero will be switched from puller to pusher and up-engined in the Robert style
Obviously I may not finish both but I am going to do my damdest. Personally. Circumstances permitting
Roll on the start

I think Rule 8 explains that ? My understanding is that builds have to fall into either one or the other categories, or you may commemorate both in one build. At the end of the build there will be 2 votes, one for Tophe and one for Kitnut memorial builds. If you do choose to commemorate both in the one build then it will be entered in both Polls.

Perhaps as a courtesy to the moderators, the builder should state if it's a Tophe, kitnut, another member such as Brian da basher or a combination. Just to make things clear.

Thanks Chris. I had thought that would be the case, but then decided I was probably overthinking it all. Should have re-read the rules before asking.
And I agree with the suggestion that participants state which category their entries fall into.

With respect, this GB is to remember Tophe and Kitnut. Others can be remembered elsewhere.
I've been having thoughts about my entry into this GB .
A push/pull P-51 Mustang is a go for certain but my issues were (notice were ;D ) the landing gear.
It's going to be a racer but because of the engines layout the landing gear would need to be tricycle with no room for the front leg.
Then I had a bitchin thought..floats ð
It's going to be a twin-engined P-51D racing float plane ðð
I'm really excited about this now ððĪĨðĪŠ

So ture about that Moggie mate ðĪ ð
Tophe never had the landing gear issue like most of us we do ð
I had the same thoughts about that clearance problem and using the same props would cause a problem with the ground..I figured ya need a pretty tall front gear and long tails struts just to clear the ground and it would look weird dew to the height.
I've got a few float planes that could be used so I'll be digging them out and see which size will be closest

It wouldn't have changed the model basic model either way (would have changed some minor fitting though), but I have been struck by a particularly entertaining idea for a backstory....
For builds dedicated to Tophe I am working on the principle that physical laws and aerodynamic principles are just guidelines which can be adjusted (or ignored) by applying Tophe magic.
I am also specifying Tophalumin in their construction. A versatile material which can be cast, forged, machined, foamed with helium or vacuum, welded with ease, and deep fried. It is an alloy of Whiffium, Unobtanium, and Love with materials properties which if looked up simply say "Better".

I appreciate the availability of Tophalumin and may well apply it sparingly or when backed into a corner. However, since it's me that's going to be explaining the model to puzzled punters at shows for a few years to come, I'm also going to stick to my own brand of "that rivet's exactly there for this pseudo-logical scientish engineeringy reason..." as much as possible... ;D
