Title: Mig 37 Ferret
Post by: Devilfish on March 13, 2025, 09:59:37 AM
The Mig 37 was the Soviet response to the American F-19 Stealth "fighter" in the late 1980's.  Unfortunately, not having the sort of computers that were available to the west, the Mig 37 (NATO codename "Ferret") turned out to be not very stealthy.   Initial trials proved that although it had a reduced radar cross-section, It wasn't enough to make a difference.  By this time, 20 aircraft had been delivered in their signature black scheme.  After propaganda photos were taken, they were quickly repainted in a standard camo scheme and deployed in Afghanistan until the Russian withdrawal in 1989.  After that they were ceremonially withdrawn from service.

Kit - Italeri 1/48

That's a really nice and very plausible back story, with a very good model to go along with it. Great work!

A suitably scungy appearance for an Afghanistan based Soviet type. Love the camo too.

I recall that those in the know about the Have Blue and the F-117 were pleasantly bemused by the fictional F-19 Stealth Fighter kit, as it was curved, and the Stealth Fighter described in Tom Clancey's Red Storm Rising as a twin seat, curvy affair, but when the fictional MiG-37 kit was released it caused a bit of a pause as it was much closer to the F-117.

When I was doing my training to be an air radar tech for the RAF in the late 80's, we were told that a potential stealth aircraft would have no straight edges or hard angles, so when the F-19 kit appeared it made sense.  The appearance of the F-117 just went against everything I'd been taught, but of course there were reason for it's unusual appearance.

Thats's great build and camo finish. This kit and the "F-19" always seemed too small for the scale, especially compared to real fighters. The 1/48 would look better as 1/72 and the 1/72 as 1/144
