The Wooksta!

You might want to avoid Mach Poo, as their kits have absolute f*cktons.

Not cool without the turret? The TT ones look fab an my single seater with a pair of Vickers S guns is the epitome of cool.

I'm liking the single-seat look! Have to agree, though, the TT versions do look great, and I'll have to have a look for your tank-buster!

Cheers,
Mark

Quote from: Wardukw on May 15, 2023, 11:19:09 AMI've always liked the Defiant because of that 4 gun turret but when you loose that turret the coolness factor goes bye-bye  :o
It's not a pretty plane now as a single..ok I'm not saying it looks good with the turret either  <_<

I did a 1/72 what-if Boulton-Paul P.94 some years ago combining the awful old Airtfix Defiant with the engine of the just as awful old Airfix Hurricane.

That looks really excellent - two wrongs definitely do make a right! Thanks for sharing your photo <_<

The line of the upper fuselage aft of the canopy makes a big difference to how a single seater Defiant works. BP's arrangement seemed to try and echo the line of the original turreted version, a bit silly when it didn't have a turret.

Mat's version looks LOADS better, and pretty plausible too
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

Mats build is far better than the original one ..it looks like a figther and not something which has had its turret removed and covered over.

Great build Mat 👏  ;D
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

Definitely, it looks so much better! Mat's P.94 upper fuselage makes the whole aircraft take on a different look - its actually an elegant 'plane in that configuration. I think the Valiant's spine will evolve a bit to look more like the later P.94 design.....

Very much so
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Devilfish

I wonder what a Defiant fighter would look like with a bubble canopy, or a car door set up like the early typhoon?

The bubble canopy single-seater looks great - Henk de Jong built a What-If Navy version with a Griffon nose, cut-down rear fuselage and dorsal strake, published in Scale Aircraft Modelling for October 2021 (Vol 43, Issue 8 ), alongside a "Fulmar-esque" two-seat Navy fighter.

If building ones idea of a production single seater based on the Defiant then one really needs to narrow the fuselage behind the cockpit where the turret was.  It's really quite wide there.
When fitting a Defiant turret into a Blenheim Mk1 I found I had to widen its fuselage.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

The Defiant fuselage is quite "hippy", oddly the widest point is aft of the actual turret. It also seems to be slightly broader in cross-section at the top than at the bottom behind the wing root. Apologies for the slightly murky photos, but the shadows give lie to the shapes. I think in plan view, the fuselage sides are warped inwards around the driver's seat which adds to the effect.

I think Boulton Paul would definitely have narrowed the fuselage for the P.94 single-seater design, but for a panic fighter needing to be in production quickly using as many existing tools and jigs as possible, I don't think they would have bothered.

If you're doing a single seat Defiant in 72nd, use either the old tool Airfix one, as it doesn't flare out too much or try and find the Pegasus Target
Tug (MPM also did one).  The latter would also make for a good night fighter or short range ELINT aircraft.

Edit: somewhere I have a Pegasus one that was donated as an assembled but unpainted wreck. Must try to find it.
