I've been bouncing an idea around the brain box now for ages about the M1128 Stryker mobile gun system.
So many reports tell of how much this thing is hated by the troops who use them and that got me thinking.
Taking the turret ..upgrading it with more firepower and mounting it on something with doesn't get stuck at the first sign of deep mud .
Well sitting in the stash is a Hobbyboss CV90-40 IFV and I know you guys know where this is going..well already went.
So Tuesday last week I got into the build.
First off move the original turret mounting to a more centered position..easily done..just cut it out and move it sideways.
The MGS turret is bloody near a perfect fit and only required minimal mods to get it to sit properly..then the fun began.
The 105mm gun won't cut it in today's world if you really want to be nasty ..so it was replaced with a L55 120mm gun...also drones have become a big problem for the bad guys so I stuffed a 20mm cannon onto the side of the turret for drone defense.
Also made the panoramic site on the turret retractable so it sits much higher ..then it retracts to the original height and can then fold down ..so I thought anyway..I kinda made it to tall ..so I put an addition onto the back of the turret to store it in ..
Now heres the bogga loo gents..excluding the site ..this thing sits lower than the original M1128 ...so good marks there.
I've also up armoured the CV90s hull front and sides and given it much thicker side armour .
I'll post pics later this week as I'm gonna start painting this thing today ..well prime it anyway.
Camouflage will be a modified version of the original style which I also have pics of from a RW CV90 .
More to follow chaps  ;D
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .

Looks good! That giant gun makes a big vehicle look tiny.

Thanks Franky matey 👍
And as for the guns size.. it's it's best redeeming feature 😎  ;D

I do like the lines of this.
As far as the gun goes, it is is biggun. So it is a conventional gun, not a techo rail gun or something ?
It is just the auto-loader part and ammo storage that niggles me a bit in this layout.

Buzzy mate what your seeing here is a standard L/55 120mm gun fitted to the turret of a auto loaded M1128 Stryker MGS.
The loading system is inside the vehicle and originally fired a 105mm rd from a L7 gun .
The differences here is that the 105 uses a brass shell casing where as the 120mm uses a combustible shell case and the only things left is the base which is about 100mm in height.
The original loading system had a total of 5 rds for ready us and the shells were ejected out of the back of the turret ..the 120mm can be the same and since this is a wiff I've modded the turret with some extra bits to show some mods for now handling the larger rds ..in theory with the right mods this is very plausible because it's already been done many yrs ago when a soft recoil 120mm gun was mounted on a 8x8 Piranha and I've seen it fire..wouldn't call it all that soft of a recoil but it is a full power 120mm gun so it can kill MBTs .
This is following those lines.
I'll take some pics of the gun elevated and depressed..you'll be able to see the feed  chute under the gun ..this is unmodified.

Ok, got it now, I can envisage now a bit better how this works. This sort of vehicle is something I have never looked much. Most auto loaders of big guns I have looked read about  tended to have cassette type storage and clunky handling systems.

You couldn't find a BIG gun then?  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Well, he didn't put a Russian 152mm in it, nor a 155mm (probably because NATO went away from big high-velocity rifles, such as the M59 "Long Tom", to 155mm howitzers).

Buzzy I know what you mean..ya thinking like the MAX 13 or the Swedish BandCannon..times have changed on that sort of deal..the French Leclerc MBT uses a auto loader and it's smooth as silk watching it operate..that's a 120mm gun as well .

Kit it's not a big gun ..it's a freaking long gun
As the wolf said to red riding hood..all the better to clock ya at 3kms plus  ;D

Guy I'd never fit a 155mm gun on this..and I haven't got one 😕 😅

I think this is an extremely interesting build, Phil! Looking much forward to see it move on.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

kerick

There were reports of Abrams hitting Iraqi tanks at 7 clicks. That would be insane!

Pellson..thanks ya good sir matey  .
Tomorrow ill get right into this..today's plans changed but least I'm free all weekend now 🤪

Kerick mate with the upgraded siting systems I can see that ...in the Gulf we were seeing British Challenger 1s hitting T55s at 3.5ks and MSN that's donkeys yrs ago now .
We also saw the results of a Abrams which killed 2 T-55s and a T-72 in a sand storm ...so yeah I can see hugely long range shots ...very very nice shooting too .
But exaggeration is also part of combat so don't fully believe it until it's verified.
It's like yrs ago I read a report on a Tiger 1 which took a direct hit from a 16in battleship rd ..then a saw a couple of pics..like hell it took a direct hit..there was just to much of the tank left..what had happened was the rd landed very near the tank ..like 10ft away from it..the blast did shred the tank but also flipped it..you can see the point of impact on the ground.
In my unit we called it flipping the s€~t  ;D

Well a update is needed...it's primary paint job is done and the detail painting began today and is pretty much done.
Tomorrow I'll weather it and pin wash it .
Not going nuts on it..it will be a machine which had been road driven and hasn't been in the mud .
I'm not in the mood to muddy the nuts off this thing.
