Putting guns in or under the wings would seem to be much simpler. But I'm not in Germany in the 1940's. Thank God.

The feasibility of shooting through the propeller arc of a contraprop is one thing. But that is what the old drawings show.

Another thing is, how tight can the guns be installed on the nose. My eyes tell me that the old drawings have them very low: going between cylinder heads and exiting very near the spinner(s). Can that mean that the Fw 190 style bulges in front of the cockpit are not needed?

They are definitely needed. I had no way to fit the MGs otherwise.
