I couldn't find a page for Catalina themed ideas and inspiration. I just found this article about a company which plans to build brand new Catalinas for both civilian and military purposes.

It's a full size Whiff!

I hope they keep the two fuselage observation blisters, it wouldn't be a 'Catalina' if it didn't.

Cruising on the water on a takeoff run, a Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina patrol bomber can take off on land as well as water.

Actually, they got that bit wrong, it is a PBY-5 but the PBY-5 was a flying boat & not amphibious; the PBY-5A was amphibious! ;)

Elements of the UK media have in the last week or so described CL-415s as 'flying boats'.  Jeez, where do they get these journos??

Rightly referred to as 'amphibious' at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66349785.

As for restarting Catalina production, well let's see - might keep the 'new' Me262/Yak-9 buyers happy, but who else?

ME!

I LOVE Catalinas. I'd never afford one of course, but it'd be great to know that they just exist.

The CL-415 is a flying boat because it has a hull rather than floats, that it's amphibious is irrelevant. Technically speaking all seaplanes, hulled flying boat or float, are amphibious because they operate on the water and in the air. Some referred to early wheeled landing gear seaplanes as tri-phibians, but it didn't catch on.
;)

The neo-Catalina idea is idiotic, there's nowhere to put 34 passengers and I don't care how powerful an engine they put on it, it'll still be slow. Extensive redesign would be needed to make it even somewhat doable, redesign that would drive a requirement for certification making all of their existing paperwork meaningless.

Yeah, but it'd still look GREAT.  ;D

Hate to disagree with you jcf, but the CL-415 is an amphibian according to https://aerialfirefighter.vikingair.com/sites/aerialfirefighter.vikingair.com/files/docs/canadair_infosheet_june2020_final_v2.pdf

But totally with you and Kit regarding a Catalina revival.

I hope so too, very useful in the SAR role. Possibly also useful in getting special forces in and out of as well.

In the civilian role, maybe that's where the VIPs sit to eat their french fancies?

I thought that the "French fancies" sat in the observation blister seats and looked cute, whilst their "sugar daddy"  companions observed them rather than the view outside...........................or am I just getting overly cynical in my dotage?

Perhaps the newly built military Catalina will look like a close relation of my OA-10C Sprite build here;

But totally with you and Kit regarding a Catalina revival.

It's an amphibious flying boat.  Just as any aircraft equipped with amphibious floats becomes
an amphibious floatplane.

Seaplane (flying boat or float), and amphibian/amphibious are not mutually exclusive terms.
