What if the Fairey Gannet AEW.3 served in the Falklands/Malvinas conflict? The Royal Navy realised that the airforce would not be able to cover the south Atlantic with the ancient Shackleton, so they elected to resurrect the recently retired Gannet. A RWR set was added to the tail as well as flares/chaff dispensers to counter possible enemy interceptions and a new low visibility Barley scheme was applied.

I was thinking of either of your first two suggestions. Maybe Ark Royal didn't get scrapped at all or maybe Hermes had a collapsible deck? Whatever is most plausible?

Very nice indeed!  As far as arrested wires are concerned, I'd suggest refitting them on Hermes as the TF sailed south.  Collapsible deck + AEW radome = dead Gannett.

Nice! The all-grey livery suits the Gannet well, and a very good idea, too. 

Reminds me that I have an Argentinian "counter project" from the same era somewhere in The Stash...

Airfix do, or did, a 1/350 HMS Illustrious, which is a good start. IIRC all three of the 'through deck cruisers' were different to each other in various respects.

Or, some "helpful", Allied nation provided contracts (and related funding) for the RN and Cammell Laird to keep supplies and staff on hand for the Royal Navy's Audacious-class to keep humming at least into the mid-90s, as mentioned here

Well, not no mo', as they say here - most modern vessel showing is the Great Western ... EvilBay is just as bad with astronomic prices or very small scales ...

Yes - I have poor eyesight, so ships are a challenge for me - I rarely build them.  My first, oh so long ago, was an Ark Royal, and when I put it in the bath it did a replay of its demise ... heeled over and sank!  Fortunately without loss of life this time ...
