Twin Mustang with a twist

After the end of the Second World War the Schneider Trophy was started up again with the race of 1947. After the British almost won the trophy outright in 1931, the races of 1933, 1935 and 1937 produced wins for the United States, Great Britain and Germany. The race of 1939 was cancelled because of the start of the war.

In 1947 the race consisted of a Spitfire IX floatplane and a Curtiss SC-1, both hastily converted to racers by removing all armour and other excess weight.  The USA also fielded a Kawanishi N1K that it captured at the end of the war. The race was won by the Spitfire.

In 1949 the various nations had more time to prepare real racing planes. Great Britain entered the Supermarine S-7 which was based on the Spiteful. Russia entered also with a floatplane derived from the Lavochkin La-7. The United States brought a derivative of the P-51 Mustang, powered by two Merlin engines mounted one after the other and driving counter rotating propellers.

The Twin Mustang easily won the race with an average speed of 805 km/h.

Model: 2x Airfix P-51D 1/72 , floats from a Arado Ar-196.
The idea for this build was provided to me by Kim Scholer from Denmark who sent me a profile drawing of this aircraft.

the things you learn, give your mind the wings to fly, and the chains to hold yourself steady
take off and nuke the site form orbit, nope, time for the real thing, CAM and gridfire, call special circumstances.

LOVE that to bits, an American MC-72!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Two engines ..so it's a  twin ...2 propellers..still a twin and I'm sure you guys know about the thing I have about twins.

Freaking love it Tom 😀 😍 👍👍

I've gotta see if I can build a couple of floats ..quite large ones  :o
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

I'd love to see you continue with postwar Schneider racers.  Maybe a Corsair with floats that can pivot attached at the bend in the gullwing.  Pivot one way to get the prop out of the water (maybe a little float where the tailwheel is) and then then pivot to provide less drag

I second that! More whiff madness!

The aircraft's behaviour at sea would certainly be interesting?  ;D   Great concept, though.

Thank good it's not the standard twin stuff

....  Beautiful design, looks really nice , like it very much.
Seems that double props are very fashionable this season
It's a Land Rover, NOT a Jeep . Like a Jeep, but for gentlemen.

This is totally cool

Could have been the next step for the P-51V Vertistang after it was found to be a flawed concept
