Quote from: zenrat on August 27, 2023, 04:18:30 AMIt struck me today (while PSRing an Me 109 fitted with Me 110 engines) that whiffing makes us better modellers.
The skills needed to kitbash, scratchbuild, and generally buggerise stuff are so much more than we would have if we just followed the instructions.
A bit like life I guess.

You couldn't be more correct Fred....what other model builders can have an idea no matter how warped or difficult  can make it real..wiff builders ...we simply do things other builders can't  ..could be they don't have the skills or the imagination ..or both but man I love being able to do what we do  ;D

..which, I think, is why I find myself more amused than annoyed by the absolute and relentless refusal of any kind of cooperation of my Amodel Yak-28. Nothing even remotely fits. And yet, once you figure out how to make it fit, the result looks great! And I'm having a ball en route. Just adding one piece to another Hasegawa style can be calming, but fighting a bit for a result is good fun! Plus the fact that I can always blame the kit for any mistakes and misalignments.  ;)
That sort of thing just goes to show how nuts some of us are..as Lee mentioned there's others who just like to change the wallpaper on OTB builds and if that's what they want to do then good on em but it just shows how good we serious nuttas are ..these new dudes who just change decals might be to chicken to hack up perfectly good models or lack the imagination we ll have..who knows for sure but if can continue to blow minds and confuse ppl then I'm a happy chappie 😊

I do have some hesitation at chopping up a $50 1/72 scale kit but if that's what it takes so be it. Of course, if I can get said kit at a show for much less it hurts much less.
Sometimes a person getting into whiffing can be a matter of expanding one's skills in the use of different materials to exploring 3D modeling. I'm still reluctant to seriously try silicone mold making and two part resin casting.

Arrrrrgh.  Internet not working for 10 days.  F**king ISP support service is sh*t.  It's taken three calls to them and everytime they try and make us go through the basic fault finding from scratch.   :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Sorry, had too vent.  Just spent all morning on call #3 but finally they have agreed that maybe, just possibly it might be a fault outside of my house.  Now i've been telling them this from the start but what do I know.  We had to get a local technician to come in and check everything out at our cost and even then they questioned what I was telling them.
Bunch of c**ts.

No difference here mate..the only time I'm buying brand new kits is when I can get em cheap as chips and I'm happy to say that recently I've had good luck there and in a couple of weeks onevof the best scores I've ever had will be coming home 😁
Everything I'm buying is half or less than half of store prices.
3D is not going to happen ever for me ..one it's to damn experience here to buy a good machine and two me understanding how to use it 🙃
I've made molds before and cast parts but again not now..it cheaper to buy another model for its parts than cast your own .

I dunno, mate.. from time to time, that's all the whiffing I do to a kit too. It depends on what I'm after just this time.

What I was looking to convey is that I think I've gotten much better at dealing with "bad" kits since I started hacking up things.

Oh it all goes together at some point..what I think Lee was saying that least new dudes only do decal wiffs ..where we might do the same and I know I'm going too we will also go into a area of wiffery they fear to step .
Hell im seriously thinking of doing a Australian Air Force Viggen in Aussie camo ..when I can find Aussie modern decals for it...but I'm also going to hack nine colours of crap out of a perfectly good Ju88 either before of after

Phill, try a library - some of them have a 3-d filament printing machine - not ideal, but they may also have a contact who has a resin printer.
Bottom line, you don't have to have one of your own; if you can find someone with one, see if you can make use of that.

Rick matey that might be a thing down your way but honestly I've not heard of a single library up here with one..remember this Auckland..there is nothing good about Auckland.
It's scary when ya think I spend my money at only 4 stores in that crap hole and being council run the libraries there are crap too.

CHoPs is progressing.  I'm mocking everything up before I paint the frame so as to make sure I don't need to add any brackets or drill any holes.

Personally I don't think you have to carve things up to be a Whiffer.  I certainly don't anymore. For various reasons the vast majority of my Whiffery nowadays simply involves putting a standard kit in some new and different markings or taking a prototype/paper project type and putting it in operational markings.

Please don't get too elitist.  :-\
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

The Wooksta!

My point was more that many of the new wave seem not to think about the reasoning or history behind their projects, many just seem to just do it for the cool factor (FFS! Can we please have less 56 or 74 sqn stuff?) Which is fine if if it works for them.

It doesn't for me.  A lack of thought is a sign of laziness. Whiffing is meant to be doing something different and new, not just following the herd. It needs some thought put into it to work properly.
