True, and it never ever did look right. Always seemed to be an afterthought, which it probably was. I've never seen footage of them being fired, not that it bothers me, but I suppose I'll have to go and find some now ?

You're aware that the Arab EE Lightnings did have a possibility to fit bombs over the wings, to be jettisoned by powder charge. And yes, it did work. 

I LOVED the overwing launchers! They're full size Whiffs, JUST the sort of thing we'd do, so I bet the guy at Warton who had the idea was one of us.

The upper mounts have inherent advantages - the wings did not blank out the sky to the searching missile seekers in turns.  The upper mounts also balance the missiles better.

I'd forgotten about the bombs, I remembered the fuel tanks, but not the bombs, and no it didn't look right

The only other aircraft that had topside launchers was the F11F-1F Super Tiger.  It had launchers on the spine, but they were only flown as an aerodynamic mock up and never test fired to my knowledge. 

Apart from looking stupid, having munitions mounted above the wings must make it harder when it comes to loading them.

I'm now thinking about building one of my Skyraiders with extra above wing hardpoints...

Sidewinders are good for add-on over-wing mounts because, as rickshaw said, turning towards the enemy doesn't block the seeker heat, also they run along the rail when fired (rather than dropping off before/as the engine ignites), & they don't need special radars or large avionics systems incorporated into the fuselage, as most of the targetting & tracking is done by the weapon's IR seeker head.

Then there was the combo overwing fuel tank/rocket pod for the Lightning.

Go one further and mount a cannon along the centreline.

Fuel in the aft part, gun down the middle with rockets the around the gun tube.

Not much fuel, a couple of seconds of ammo and a handful of rockets, why not?

Or make it even sillier, the gun in one fuel tank and the magazine in the other.

When my employers were contracted to upgrade the Tornado GR1 fatigue test rig to the GR4 spec, I went to Warton to install it. I asked the test engineer what the planned wing loads were so I could setup the computer database prior to commissioning the rig, and when he told me I asked 'No over-wing pylons then?' 

The look on his face would have melted unobtanium!
