I have other builds where I ignored something similar and I don't like them.  I look at them and can't get over whatever it is I didn't change.

Anyhoo, today I removed the floats and struts and have begun rebuilding the mounts.  This time as well as having the floats closer together the attachment points for the extra round bracing (if only evergreen did oval or aero section rod) are less clunky and more to scale.

I tried goggling for strut stock, and came across a couple of mentions of folk squeezing either plastic rod or brass tube slightly, then sanding one edge to get a smaller taper.
Or just living with it being an oval cross-section, rather than airfoil/teardrop.

Hmmm yonkos ago someone in the UK made airfoil shaped strut material, possibly Aeroclub, it's the sort of thing John Adams would have done.

Yes. they did.  I knew someone did in the dim and distant past (back when we were all young Adonis's) but I had forgotten who until you said the name.
It seems an obvious thing to produce.  How else can you scratch build biplanes?
Sanding down round or rectangular rods would be such a PitA.  Maybe gluing strip to round and then adding a smear of filler would work?  Fiddley in the one true scale though.

Spent most of today sitting around reading while a plumber and a sparky installed a new hot water service.  The old one has been leaking due to a corroded tank and didn't have long left on this mortal coil.  Better to get it replaced now that have it let go half way through a shower.
However, this being done precluded me spending any time in my shed as it gets awful dark in there when the power is turned off.

I checked out EBay yesterday after reading your post to see if any Aeroclub strut was up for sale, it isn't.    I've got some but I'm a long way away.

There's a few Aeroclub bits up for sale, and some kits if anyone is after white metal bits and bobs.

Thanks anyway.  Kitbashing is one way to get short lengths.

The potential for catastrophe with major corrosion in a hot water circuit  is  quite considerable.  A collapsed ceiling and/or a scalded Zenrat is a BAD THING.

Contrail also did strut stock back in the day, but like the Aeroclub stuff, it's long gone.

I miss the Aeroclub range, they had a lot of interesting bits and I wish I'd gotten a lot more of them... particularly their propellers.

Australian hot water services are routinely situated outside (remember, it rarely drops below zero here and on the hot months you don't want a "boiler" inside with you). Ours was on the outside of the en-suite wall.  A position which undoubtedly speeded up corrosion.  If the tank had let go it would have resulted in nothing more than a wet path.

Also started putting back struts on the Do.17 floats.

Interesting. I have actually never understood why you people in warmer climates more often than not are keeping your heaters outdoors, but it does make sense when you think about it. Never too late to learn, I suppose.. 

On Mythbusters they bypassed every safety device on a hot water heater (why are we heating hot water? Shouldn't it be a cold water heater?) and let it cook until it blew. It shot straight up like a rocket and took more than you might think to come down.

Some places the washer and dryer are outside too. Makes hauling off the old one and installing the new one a lot easier.

You can do some quite exciting things with high pressure steam...................catapulting aircraft off carriers, for a start.
