Super sonic Buccaneer

I am sure someone will have built one or had discussions about what if a super sonic Buccaneer was given the go ahead and put into production. This has been rattling around the saw dust lined void between my ears for a few weeks now, and caused me to purchase an older Airfix Buccaneer S2 B/D/Smk50. Not the best kit as I have built a new tool one, but it will do. The thinner wings could be cause for concern if I wanted to do a "proper" one and also with the engines being reheated, what would be suitable for the exhaust nozzles? I have purchased some add on sensors for a tornado to put on mine when I build it, as it will serve into the 21st century, mine will be mid to late 80's possibly early 90's, and armed suitably for the time frame.
So, my only stumbling block so far would be finding suitable exhaust nozzles, as I don't think the fuselage would take cutting open too well.
Cheers

The obvious ones would be those from an RAF or FAA Phantom as they had exactly the engines you'll be using, afterburning Speys.

But they'll be quite a bit larger in dia. than the normal Bucc exhausts so I see some extensive PSR work in your future......... :(

There was a real roposal to fit afterburners to a proposed RAF version. All you really need to do is to remove the smaller circular exhaust and then fit a larger diameter tube to the sides, not into the fuselage, the designe had the exhaust on the outside just like the usual versions, just larger diameter so they stuck out further.
Lots of filling to get it to blend in but far easier than cutting into the fuselage too much. Will try to find and post a picture this evening.

Try the secret projects website or Google Supersonic Blackburn Buccaneer as there's a line drawing of the concept artwork.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Thanks for everyones input, much appreciated.Seeing what the exhausts look like would help greatly, as because its technically a wiff, a pair of spare exhaust cans from the bits box could do the trick , as long as they fit correctly.
Cheers,
Chris.

Cheers Mossie, there is quite a lot of structural difference in the P150, compared to the standard S2, so a bit of compromise on the shape will be needed.

It's a bit like an FB-111H compared to a standard FB-111A, much more curves and bumps etc.

Not all supersonic Bucc proposals had the Mirage-style intakes, so that's one feature you can compromise on.

Since the engines are at the front and the nozzles are at the back, you can fit any size afterburner nozzle you want as long as it's bigger than the original one, then just adapt the backstory to suite. The F-4K/M afterburners were very large in relation to the dry thrust, essentially doubling it from roughly 10,000lb dry to 20,000lb wet. This means that if you had half as much reheat you'd still be increasing the basic Bucc's thrust from 20,000lb to 30,000lb, which would be very useful indeed, even if it was only used for take-off and a short burst over the target (that's roughly the same degree of reheat that the Jaguar had). It'd use loads of fuel of course, but the Bucc's one aircraft that's not short on fuel.

Cheers H!
The kit has 2 different sizes of slipper tanks for extra fuel, but I am not going to use them as they take up valuable pylon/ordnance space, so the additional fuel can go in the bomb bay. Mine will be an RAF version too, with the wing folds removed, and a 3rd pair of pylons fitted, these will either carry sidewinders, or an electronics pod of some description. The thicker wing will help in this department I should have thought. As Weaver says the super sonic capability will only get used for swift access and egress to and from the target, the rest of the time, it will be just subsonic, scraping off the floor. Now to decide its mission, and what ordnance to hang off it.

From when i looked at the P150, i think a Matchbox or the Revell rebox might act as better basis to stretch the fuselage and a bue steel used to make the rear end as the coke bottle look is removed. The matchbox fuselage is slt vertical with seperate wing roots, intakes and exhaust structures making it more suitable for conversion. Of course it needs decent cockpit tub, wheel wells & canopy as the kit ones are either none existent or not suitable.

Should be an intersting build and will produce a very interesting model. Chris

I did consider getting a matchbox one to begin with, but having built one way back when, remembered how awkward they were to build. Hopefully my rendition with the old airfix kit will "work"and it comes out something similar.

I will probably leave the intakes as is, and no doubt get pulled for it, as the originals are not suitable for super sonic flight, but it is whiff world, and theres also lots if super sonic aircraft out there with large gaping holes for intakes. Just to annoy the non conformist styrene stazi, I could put shock cones in them
