Not strictly a Whif, but stretching a point, you could say "what if you used unconventional bases for dioramas".

These are by an Australian artist called Kendal Murray. The first one was posted on Twitter ("X" ) without attribution and doesn't appear on her website, but I'm 99% sure it's hers.

Those are nice.
I have recently been gifted some metal and glass display cases which are too small for my usual scale car builds and i was thinking of building 1/72 dioramas into them.  I may have to get some mirrors.

Having now looked at the website I can say that while the works are excellent and fascinating the names given to them irritate.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Well she presents herself as a artist, rather than a model-maker, so some degree of opaque art-critic-speak kinda goes with the territory...

The top one is particularly nice

Having had a girlfriend who collected vintage compacts then some of those bases are a tad expensive I would have thought ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I dare say. I don't know what she charges for them but they're in retail art galleries and private collections, so I assume it's 'fine art' prices.

Pieces start around $2,000 AUD and only go up.

The artist's statement twaddle has always been
the hardest thing for me to write going back to
the early '80s. "I do art because I want to" isn't
sufficient for the gallery and show organizers
types.

"The artist's work is a struggle to express the inner tension between the primal urge to create, the seductive attractions of everyday diversions, and the tragic neccessity of the gainful employment that prevents his existential crisis from becoming actualised. His art subtly embodies his simultaneous desire to be understood by an impersonal world, and for that understanding to be oblique to his inner self, proceeding from inference, nuance and intangibility, whilst expressing his angst at the predictive possibility of that understanding failing to become actualised due to the apathy, ennui and performative pseudo-intellectualisation of the modern world. Whilst being at the same time relatably real and intriguingly intangible, it's deceptive simplicity masks deep and complex abiguities that speak to our collective cultural unease with the contradictions inherent in the conflicting definitions of art and reality imposed on us by the current zeitgeist."

Madame Rheged tells me she  saw these being touted as "Ideal present for the most important woman in your life"   in an upmarket magazine she read at the hairdressers recently.  They were noted as  "available direct from their creator , prices starting at £1100 sterling".      Fortunately for me she emphatically does NOT want one for  Christmas..............or any other time.
