Quote from: Dizzyfugu on November 20, 2023, 05:29:41 AMI have used surplus wheels from an 1:100 VF-1 kit to fill the exhausts' interior. For a cursory glance it's more than enough, definitively better than the OOB "wall" or just empty holes.

It is a very useful type of part to have in the spares box indeed.
I'd already done something similar but on the opposite end of the engine. I used two SU-27 main wheels for the engine fans of the YF-23.

Not an exact thing but enough for me. Also think it's better than nothing.

So, panel lines are engraved... second time doing a complete kit and coincidentally, the first kit on which i did this was the same on which i used wheels to represent engine parts... ;D

Enough of the Black Widow, here's how Gina is looking right now...

Like on the YF-23, my engravings aren't pro level but i think they came out better on this second try. Guess it means i learned something on the first one. ;D
As bad a they may look, i still think my lines look better than the raised detail and also better than the original trenches.
Gave the whole fuselage a good sand down to smooth everything out after engraving the lines and cleaned out the reaming dust.
Something i did a few days ago but hadn't taken any pics of was drilling of these small intakes on the fuselage...

There are still have to engrave the panel lines on the wings and also, a couple of panel lines and access hatches that are very obvious on the real thing so this stage may take a bit longer than expected.
I also want to cut off the molded on gun barrels and drill holes to fit some barrels later on so there's much to do...

Looking great. I recommend hollow steel needles as free-standing gun replacements, thesy improve the looks a lot.

If it also had a big .. erm ... "front" you could call it the Lollobrigida.

Panel lines look good enough to me

I'm thinking of something like that, yes.   I do have a few of those needles around so i may end up doing just that.

;D Gina Lollobrigida... i have to agree with you, gents she was a beauty, classy lady indeed. I must have seen at least a couple of her movies when i very young so i don't remember any of them. My mom and dad used to talk about her a lot.

Ok, back home from another physiotherapy session for my shoulder and it's feeling better so, i'm gonna be working on scribing the wings and then to see if there's anything that needs some clean up or something. If everything goes as expected, i may be able to have a full airframe by the day's end.

Haven't heard that one in a while...  ;D

So, as always, i didn't get to where i thought i could earlier but i'm glad i took my time with the panel line engraving. It made me take a step back and evaluate the work done so far and fix and improve some areas. Some lines were looking a bit too rough for my taste but now, i think it's at a point where i'm satisfied with the result and i'll soon be able to move on with the build.
Finally decided to go with a more realistic whiff by ditching the All-weather radar and keeping the original camera nose section. The only photo of the YS prototype i could find shows the original nose so it wouldn't be a necessity just to use AIM-9s so i'm still adding those.

So, today i'll be finishing the panel lines on the wings. If i can do that, i'll try to get the intake attached but that will also need some filling and sanding because the fit is bad and there will be gaps. I've already cut out the cannon barrels that were molded on the fuselage and the replacements will be tested on after all the filling/sanding work on the intake lip is done.

Panel lines done, intake glued on...

Like with almost every part on this kit, the intake lip was out shape and took quite a bit of adjusting and dry fitting but i eventually got it to a pint where it held in place by just slightly pressing it on. There were a couple of spots where i sanded away just a bit too much so a bit of sprue goo was applied.
I also found that i'll have to fill in the slots molded in the lower aft fuselage to attach the ventral fins as they are not aligned and would have the fins pointing in different directions... i'll also might as well scratchbuild the ventral fins themselves as the ones provided in the kit are way too thick and also a tad short.
There are also a couple of details that might be tricky to replicate and those are the brake chute and something that i'm not really sure what to call... maybe gun blast deflectors? It's a pair of parallel rods that form an arch over the gun barrels... i'd never seen that type of structure on any other aircraft but that's my best guess as to what they are.

The brake chute doesn't seem too hard to make but these "deflectors" will only be added in the final stages of the build, if i do attempt to put them on, that is... I'm not sure how that will go over the sharkmouth decal that will be in that area but, i guess i have enough time to decide before i get to that stage.

Those wires are not "Deflectors" as a deflector would have to be something a bit more solid to deflect the cannon blast. They are probably just guards to protect the barrels from people or equipment bumping into them.

Just that. The barrels stand relatively free and it's easy to damage them on the ground, so that the muzzles are protected by those small "roll cages". I have re-created them on my last Yankee Gina (real world, though) with very thin steel wire - improves the look a lot, but they unfortunately sit in/over the shark mouth, what causes some "design troubles".

I thought of that but couldn't think of anything else to call them... ;D

Thanks for clarifying that up, guys!
Well, i've been trying to think of how i wanna do it and first, they have to be added after the gun barrels so, that will be after the shark mouth is applied.
I'm thinking of trying to make them out of electrical wire or something similar so that it can be glued on with CA glue over the decal. Gotta find some close up pics to make out exactly where they go, the shape and size... It will only depend on how good my attempts come out.  ;D

So, tonight i've already filled the slots for the original ventral strakes and i've decided to use the original ones and sand them down to a reasonable thickness and rework the shape a bit.
If i finish that, i'll probably take a look at the wing fences, they're quite thick for what they represent so i may end up cutting them out and replacing them.

So much for the quick and simple build idea... this was supposed to be that but as i've said before, this isn't an easy kit to find selling at reasonable prices very often so, chances are this will be my one and only build of this jet so din't want to just slap it together as is when i knew i could improve something to make it a bit more interesting than the OOB kit and better to my eyes.
Not trying to make a contest winner cause, i don't have the skills to accomplish a master-level build and that's fine, i don't do contests anyway but i know i'll feel better with the build by doing these upgrades. I just hope i'm able to give it a decent finish.

Speaking of finishing... the multiple schemes available for Portuguese G.91s are all interesting but i imagine that the original dark green/dark grey over light grey, with the shark mouth and PoAF markings, at least a few will be confused when i take it take my club's annual show.
But that scheme is also my favorite for this bird so, that's what it'll be.

So, i've been silent but some work has been done over the past couple of days...

Wing fences- i resorted to simply using a wood nail file and sanded them down. I went as far as i could without damaging the surrounding area or the fences themselves.

Ventral strakes- With a side view photo on the screen, cut up some bits of Evergreen styrene 0.05mm sheet and now i have a new set with the correct shape and size, not to mention the thickness.

I've also finished sanding the sprue goo off of one side of the intake but the other side need a second round of filling cause there were a couple of air bubbles that became holes when i sanded them down.

Weekend with bad weather means time to do some modelling so hopefully tomorrow will be a productive day...
