However I do wonder if the manufacturers ponder on the fact that if you open a massive box only to find a small kit (or whatever) rattling around inside then some people will think they've been conned ?

Lego have been getting away with it for years.

I think at least partly it is also because in the shop you think you're buying a massive kit that will be worth the value.
Same as when you by cookies or chocolates or whatever. The box is always far to big for the content.

Are you saying, that like with breakfast cereal the contents of the kit have settled during transport?   ;)

Well....
We do talk about kits from Tamiya and the like that come together when you shake the box.
Is probably not the case with Mikro Mir though  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

I tested the "Standardized Box Theory" by comparing the Mikro-Mir 1/35 Triton 1-M sub kit (in their smaller boxes) with the Crusader K-6. The bag of Crusader sprues fit nicely in the Triton box in width and length, but was firmly touching the boxtop lid when I closed it. Maybe they went with the bigger box to reduce the chances of a part getting crushed.

If they did, good for them

Never owned or built Lego. Don't even think I've even bought it as a present for nieces/nephews etc. Probably won't be allowed back into Denmark next time I go to Copenhagen  after that admission

Don't worry, Chris!  I've bought much more than my quota of  Duplo and Lego, initially for my sons, and then for my grand-daughters.  You can have  the credit for  my "over quota"  amounts

That's one reason why I never buy Tamiya kits. They're so bloody boring to build.
The other reason is they are (personal opinion only) so outrageously expensive and, (actual reality) way outside my affordability range. 😉

I'd rather be "bored" during construction than fight the damned thing right out of the box, and have fun during the painting and arming portion of the build.

And yes, they are getting outrageously expensive

For a paint/decal whif, I'll happily agree, but for a reconstruction, I find too well fitting kits annoying as they really don't invite to going off the instructions, whereas an old Airfix or a Mach 2 will yell for new bits and pieces - because the originals won't fit anyway..  ;)
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

The Wooksta!

Whilst Tamiya may seem expensive, in reality they're not. The 72nd mosquito is around the 20 quid mark and has been since it came out in 2000, so in real terms it's cheaper than ever.
As for their build quality... I'd rather build a Tamiya Mosquito as OOB they're simply the best that money can buy.  None of the others come close for fit, accuracy and ease of build.  And I include the new Airfix one in that assessment.  See my comments elsewhere on that Curate's egg.

Mossie

Tamiya are the only manufacturer that price their kits according to their age.  Older kits are very reasonably priced.  More recent ones can be pricey, albeit comparable to other manufacturers and the level of fit and detail.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Unlike, oh lets say Hasegawa shall we and open up that whole can of worms again.   ;)

I have a 1/72 Tamiya Mossie in the stash.  I bought it after asking advice here as to which one I should buy.  I'll build it soon.
