Juggling primers in Halfords today, they seem to have growm exponentially since I bought my last can a few years ago. Grey, white red, plastic primer , filling primer (I know about the latter)

So, which one? 'Primer' or 'Plastic Primer' assuming I'll go for the grey?

I just get the normal grey and white primer.  Not tried the plastic primer.

I always go for the white plastic primer. It's brilliant for priming AND as an overall white coat as well. Especially if you use a couple of coats.

In Halfords again today to get some more grey primer, and totally failed as they only had the small cans at £9.00 approx, whereas the large cans would be £11.00, if they actually had any!

From  memory they haven't had grey primer in the large cans for WEEKS, so I asked the only assistant here what was going on, after all they had the paint, it was in the small cans, and they had the large cans, they had red, white and etch primer in them. No-one knew and suggested I check with the web site.

Tried the website 'expert', who turned out to be a computer who didn't understand the phrase 'grey primer', and it suggested I phone them.

They were '..........experiencing more than usual number of calls.....', just like every other under-staffed call centre in the world, and there was no option to email them.

I bought a new product for me, seen it used on Britmodeller buy some nutter building a 1/32 Avro Shackleton

Halfords Plastic Filler Primer which I beleive is an Orange colour. Should be useful for when I eventually get my Lancaster XL going again.

I've tried that before Alastair, and didn't have much joy with it, it's nowhere near as smooth as the grey stuff once it's dried on the model sadly.

That's no problem Kit, sounds ideal for what I want to do.

Accidental Loggie

Morning all,

In a related-ish topic, does anyone know if there's been any comparison tables done for commercial spray cans vs BS paints, please?

So, for example, Halfords VolksNissan Sludge green X769q = BS241 RAF Dark Green, and similar?

All information gratefully received!  TTFN.

I tend to use the T L A R (That Looks About Right) paint charts myself. 😉😂. However, for example, I found two of the Volvo colours (forest green and, Arctic blue if I recall were a decent match for RLM70/RLM65.
I also regularly use Ford Diamond White and Nissan Pearl grey.
I usually take along a couple of pots of model paint to do compare checks.

Ford Strato Silver is a dead ringer for RAF High Speed Silver, I use it all the time.

Aren't the white and the grey actually the same thing aside from the colour?

Their generic Aluminium is best for NMF or RAF silver in 72nd, as it's very smooth, all the others silvers or metallics are too grainy for the scale.  I use Ford Stardust Silver as a primer for the Aluminium though.

Appliance White has been used by modellers for so long it's been dubbed Antiflash white.

If you can't get the standard grey, go for white.

Not as far as I've noticed, the Halfords white seems to have a coarser texture and never ends up as smooth on the model as the grey does.

Having said that, I've been pleased with the way the red primer goes on, much smoother than previous batches of it I've tried.

Basically, I'd say yes. I've used both but, as I don't ever prime models, I use them as base coats

Basically, yes. I use both. I don't ever  prime models either so, I use the primers as main coats. Haven't noticed any difference in textures either. Both give a very smooth finish.
Appliance white is the one I haven't been able to get at my nearest Halford's. Grey Primer? No problem.

Appliance White is not a primer. It is a Gloss white finish. There is a White Plastic Primer which gives a matt white finish.
