Quote from: Pellson on December 26, 2023, 09:19:21 AMSlow day in winter wonderland. Mrs P and the daughters decided to take a tour in town so me and the laddie, neither of us really enjoying shopping, got left to our own devices.
While initially contemplating some modelling, I came to start on that Lego Land Rover, and it's been a good day!

You cannot view this attachment.

Well - not done yet, but it's starting to look the part already. And it's really a very nice pastime, adding parts without any cutting, filing, sanding or painting. On the other hand, it's not at all as creative as whiffing away on a proper kit.

Well - the change is nice. And I have actually turned it into an LHD car (it comes as an RHD in the box), so not entirely by the book...  ;)

Mrs z gave me the Lego '67 Mustang GT set.  I converted it to RHD.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Building something you couldn't drive at home would be so wrong, so what can you do?  ;)

In other news - finding myself trolling the deep waters of Evilbay. Hmmmm..... Maybe build something rather than looking at buying more?

Went to strip the old paint off some SAAB's but found  that I've run out of oven cleaner. Bugger!
Well - I'll just get some tomorrow, then, but it would have been nicer not having to pop into town again.

While grumping about that, I dug out some old wings to test on that Harrier fuselage. While a delta actually could work rather well, I found that SAAB Tunnan wings fit straight on, as if they were made for it, and as any Pegasus powered aircraft would be subsonic regardless of any other factors, a delta might not be ideal in any case - which SAAB really should have found out rather quickly.

Anyway - fitting those Tunnan wings would require a set of stabilators too. Hmm..  More digging..

Do you have any Dettol, or Simple Green type products?
One of those might be worth a try.

Brake fluid (NOT brake cleaner!) will work too, but it's not the best for the plastic as it leaches something out and I'm not sure about long-term effects (brittleness, etc), though as a bonus it will weaken glue joints.

Good discussion here:

I've used neat Dettol with some success.  An old tooth brush is handy to scrub things down.     You will have the additional advantage of your model being completely germ-free (but it will smell odd)

Neither is available over here, I'm afraid. But I did go to find some oven cleaner, so things are now sprayed and sealed in aplastic bag, and tomorrow, I'll give them a work-over with a toothbrush and then we'll be good to continue.

In the meantime, I'm still quite undecided on that SAAB VTOL aircraft. I have brought out loads of different wings to try out , and while several of them looks OK, I'm still a bit unconvinced as far as the concept of a VTOL delta goes. In particular when looking at it from a tactical STOVL perspective. That concept would benefit from a wing with better lowspeed lift properties than a delta usually will demonstrate, while the main argument for the delta is the lower supersonic drag. And the Pegasus won't really like supersonic flight anyway.
Accordingly, I might be looking harder at a more conventional wing/stabilator setup, leaving the original SAAB concept behind. We'll see what conclusion I'll reach.

Simple answer to this conundrum, build both. Delta and conventional  ;)

That would require another Harrier. Which, admittedly, shouldn't pose an insurmountable challenge given some time.

I shall mull on this too. And, maybe, start a build thread rather than continue here.

I seem to recall posting in my targets for 2023, a year ago, that being around to wish you a Happy New Year 2024  and you being  around to accept these good wishes would be my hope.   We both seemed to have survived, so I have great pleasure in wishing the Pellson family a   happy, peaceful and prosperous new year from family Rheged (Michael & Bridget)

That's one of the nicest posts I've seen.  Happy New Year to you all.

Many thanks from all of us (Pelle & Madeleine, the three hoodlums and the beardrat) to you both. And the rest of you!

Yes, this year has been somewhat tribulous as far as my health goes. I hope for a calmer 2024.
As far as the world goes, I have an annoying feeling that it basically has been downhill since the pandemic rolled in. Macrofinancial troubles, war and insurgencies. And right now, it seems next year won't improve which makes it even more important to cherish and care for the small sparks of hope, joy and good will one can come across. This site is a vital part of what's keeping me mentally sound during these times, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

So take good care of yourself, all of you, and I will try to pop over for a proper pub night sometime in the future.
