Quote from: mat on January 10, 2024, 01:37:27 AMGreat bulid Pellson. Look very SAAB'ish. But I still think that the SAAB Projekt 1500-01 is worth an attempt. I have an horrible Mistercraft Harrier GR.7 in my stash - brought by accident. Mayby this crap could be turned into something more usefull.

I wouldn't go out looking for one of those but since you already have it why not make a silk purse from sow's ear? Its the cockpits in a lot of these old or cheap kits that ruin it for me. Quick Boost and others can fix much of that.
Carry on! Its looking better all the time.

Some progress.
  • New, more balanced radar nose sorted. Still loads of PSR remaining, but I really think we're on track.
  • New, Swedish bang seat, courtesy of a Heller Viggen that left her second seat behind when I built her as a single seater. I also took the opportunity to sort some cockpit colours while mucking about in the area.
  • ..and finally, some minor adjustments to the tail. I've filled in the ruts where the original stabilators were attached, and also made some very minor shaping of the new stabilators.

It's slowly getting there, methinks.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

And that's the lion share of the PSR done, methinks. This nose job feels a lot better than the old one, even if it still is a bit "Harrierish". A little touch up on the dash, and then it's canopy on, methinks.

And then on to antennae, pylons etc, and then I have to finally take a decision on whether to go for the nightmarish splinter camouflage or cheat a bit, using the blue/green Draken scheme.

The new nose looks much better to me!

Wouldn't the blue/green scheme be good for flying over the Baltic?

It would, i think. And the Draken scheme was actually named "sea" (hav) during evaluation in the early 1960's, in contrast to a black and green scheme named "forest" (skog). Both can be seen on this shot, the first fighter being painted "forest" and the second one, just peeping out from the lower corner, wearing "hav".

Then again, at the same time, an all over blue scheme was tested and found superior on the S32C Lansen maritime reconnaissance birds.

For the Lansens already in service, neither was used, but for the Drakens and Sk60 trainers being delivered from SAAB at this time, the "hav" blue/green scheme was preferred. And I think it worked quite ok. Just think away those yellow decorations.

The splinter scheme only arrived about 15 years later, in the mid 1970's. While likely being better on the ground, especially in dispersal, I'm not that sure about how it works when the fighter is airborne.

And even worse over water

However, the VTOL SAAB would reasonably spend any conflict really well dispersed as that's about the idea with the VTOL thingy, right? And that's an argument for the splinter regardless of anything else.

But I might be overthinking this. The splinter IS pretty and unique. But also a proper PITA to get onto the model..  :-X
well, well.

'Thinking away'?

Hm, I like the concept, I'll try and use it in future, specially in connection with fuel prices and energy bills.  ;D

For the camo, I was thinking that in dispersal you'd use portable camouflage materials like nets, trees, or even a camo tent. During an attack over the sea (or land), you can't have that to keep you hard to see.

If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

Drakens look like they're doing Mach 2 when they're on the runway!  :o

Despite what you've been thinking, this one ain't quite dead! That said, progress isn't violent, but I've at least started to try out some antennae and pylons, looking to get it ready for painting some day soon.
And once I'm at that stage, I might treat you to a pic, actually..

Speaking of camo - I haven't found a good source for the latest Finnish Air Force Draken markings. I can get the version shown in the film, but not the really small rounded and small black codes. And that's annoying.

You wouldn't have a tip or two, in Gods own scale, of course?

No such luck :-\

There might be suitable roundels that are meant for something else? But then you'd still need to make the small codes.
