Quote from: kerick on January 11, 2024, 07:15:59 AMWe've been starting the new year by clearing out old crap that's been taking up space around here for thirty years. It's killing my back and knees but worth it.
Funnily enough I've been doing pretty much the same sort of thing Ken..just sorting and reorganizing and trying to stick to a plan .
One plan which has failed miserably already is not to buy that many models this yr..space being at a premium now ..but as always with my brain will sort something out  ;D

I bought a decal sheet to finish one project and that is bugging me to get an F-4E Phantom to use up the rest of the sheet. Plus drawings like this,

Makes me want two kits. I have the Mistercrap SU-22 kit for the wings already so it's just yelling at me to buy the Phantom.
Damn you Ken..damn you to chunky chicken and back ...if I hadn't looked at those Phantom pics I wouldn't have seen many seriously cool ideas for the 2 F-4s I've got .
That stealth Phantom looks epic and I've got a F-117 aswell ...or the A-4 crossed F-4 ..or or or ...

I think Tophe and ysi_maniac are the most guilty of planting ideas in my head. Not that I mind. I'm happy to help with your imagination whenever possible!
Oh you did that for sure buddy ...I'm already thinking of how much of the nighthawk will be left 😆
And I'm thinking of going back to the F-4 prototype..a single seater.

Now that would be crazy!

I was almost ready to order a Hasegawa F-4E but it turns out I have a Revell F-4F that is a really a nice kit. I might hesitate to chop the wings off it. I also have a Monogram F-4C/D that looks pretty good. There is the remains of a Fujimi F-C/D that is a dog in comparison. Problem is the Fujimi kit is incomplete in a few places. I should probably just dump it as I've picked off most of the good pieces by now anyway. No rush as far too many unfinished projects underway right now anyway!

The 2 F-4s I've got are both Hasegawa 48th jobbies and completely untouched..even the decals are still in there boxes .
One is a RF-4E and the other is a J ..either would work for the stealthy one but like you I'd keep those wings..not stealthy but to damn cool and it's also one of my favorite aspects of the Phantom.
There won't be a internal weapons bay either..no room to put on so all external weapons mounts ..makes my life much easier  ;D

Still in its hardware store grey.

It's been bugging me what this reminded me of...

Beriev Be-200.

Not a bad thing.  Just shows similar problem solving approaches.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

T'was definitely an influence. That pic looks like it's Russian service while most of my pics were the white and red coast guard looking version. I can't remember now if I saw the Be-200 before or after I started this. I blame ericr for starting this, however!

There was a plan for conformal fuel tanks for the F-4. Maybe that could become the bay.

I like the conformal fuel tanks Ken ..they look great on the right plane .
They wouldn't work underneath a F-4 as a weapons bay tho cause they'd go above the wings like a F-16 SUFA .
The Strike Eagle  has em under the wings as the wings sit at the top of the fuselage not flat like the Phantoms ..that's got one very flat bottom  ;D
But ..ohhh a thought.
Use the drop tanks to create a profile..mount half of one on each side and fill in the center..then you have a  hump for internally mounted weapons..but again that then brings in another question.
How deep and long would it need to be?
You can get 4 Sparrows under the F-4 so would it be worth all the work just to hold 4 AAMs .

PR19_Kit

Look up F-4X, which was to have conformal tanks above the engines alongside the spine. The IAF were the intended customer but it only got as far as a mockup, with larger intakes and water injection etc.

What the IAF did get were three F-4E(S)s with BIG camera noses and lots of grunt. I've been building one for at least 30 yrs now...........

F-4X mockup below.

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

There was a proposal for a conformal tanks for the F-4. This might work as a bomb bay.

Ken ..Kit ..now the thinking caps on and Ken your conformal fuel tanks idea is starting to bare fruit in the squishy bit.
Using that pic Kit posted as a bases for the build now with a bit of nutbarery something will happen now 😀
I want to us the F117s intakes as they look quite cool and graft them into this thing like the pic and then fiddle away for conformal tanks ...it's gonna take some planning but mate I think very doable 😊😊

I actually painted something and I think it turned out well! This is a big deal as paint and I seem to have been having a feud for quite awhile. So straight to the pics.

Model Master Light Ghost Grey with no thinner on the undersides.

I was considering a new whiff camo scheme but this was too weird even for me.

Mission Models Dark Ghost Grey without thinner as it says on the bottle. Good thing I read the directions!

There was very little difference in color between the dry Light Ghost Grey and the wet Dark Ghost Grey. It looks like I didn't miss anything critical.
And a left over sci fi brain of silly putty. Feel free to place all comments about celebrities, Karens and politicians here.
This would hardly stick any more so I'll be getting new.

The Model Master Gunship Grey will be tomorrow. Then gloss acrylic, decals, flat acrylic, maybe a little weathering to cover up any mistakes if I get brave enough.  The scenario was a South Pacific island hopping campaign in the 80s advancing trough the Solomons. So some wear and tear would be required.

Of course, it rules out dropping bombs but Mavericks and rockets will work just fine.
Thanks for the compliments!
