Got home on Tuesday and went to re-print the decals now I'm NOT 120 miles from the spray varnish, and the ruddy printer won't print black! 

It's got a new black ink cartridge in it but it refuses to do what it's told, bloody machines! It'll hold up doing decals for my RAF C-133 and the Ho 267 as well.

Looks like new printer time........................

One curiosity: earlier in your topic, you wrote of scribing panel  lines AFTER you had painted the model (at least the primer). I thought it was usual to do the scribing before.

Yeah, it is, but I forgot, and it became only too obvious AFTER I'd sprayed it silver.

Most IT guys, if they have to pay for a printer out of their own pocket will pick a Brother printer; they just work. A Brother color laser printer may look more expensive than an inkjet, but the total operating cost is lower. If you print infrequently, an inkjet print head may dry out.

Avoid HP printers, unless it's someone else's money.

Mines an Epson.  Has tanks full of ink rather than cartridges.  It wasn't cheap but it came with enough ink to fill the tanks plus a complete refill.  So far it's been better than the HP it replaced which was forever needing the cleaning cycle to be run through and then would refuse to accept that there were cartridges in place.
We sell printers at work.  We sell Epson and HP and Canon and they are very cheap.  In some cases we sell them with "set up" cartridges which will only print a few pages (I point that out to customers - not everyone does) but in all cases we charge like a wounded bull for replacement cartridges.

Most places do, for whatever... it's the consumables where they make the most money.
I've heard of places selling the printers at cost (or less), to get you hooked into needing the replacement cartridges.
Marketing 101.

Quite often find here in the UK that it's cheaper to buy a new printer rather than replacement inks 

That's a sad indictment on the way the world has gone.

It's crazy, wasteful and expensive for the end user, but no doubt profitable for the manufacturers.
