When I started into actually painting them, back in the 60s, all we had were enamels. Once water based stuff became available I almost completely switched because the cleanup seemed easier, and cheaper because I didn't need to buy thinners. Still have many Humbrol tins from those days, all still usable.

Exactly same as me Ratty and I still use a fair few of my old Humbrol "Authentics" for small detail painting jobs.  Thinking about it they may have been the first range sold in sets ? Don't think they were available individually ?

AFAIK we never got the sets here, but I did pick up some of the Authentics individually.
Having said that, they probably had released them as individuals by the time we got them out here. Or the local shops split them up.

Some of my decades-old Humbrols are still going strong; a bit of a stir (remove the skin), add some fresh thinners and we're away again.

Had a quick look on-line and found this link, and yes they were released individually in the 70's by which time I'd dropped out of the hobby for 25 years or so.  :-X

While the Authentic sets were very popular when they first came out most modellers quickly ran out of one colour, RAF Dark Earth and Dark Green being the most used, and then had no way of topping up their sets unless they bought a complete new set! I was helping my mate Derek in his Oxford Model Centre shop at the time and we gave the Humbrol rep a REALLY tough time because of that.

He said that Humbrol needed to get enough money back from selling the sets to outweigh the cost of doing the new range before they could sell the tinlets individually, and we retorted that they'd sell LOADS more if they were available singly anyway.

We were dead right, as soon as they put them out singly they sold like hot cakes!

Yep, there are some colours that will be in more demand than others and those might be the top 2. I'm sure that a lot of serious modelers put their own sets together anyway, and keep them together for common schemes. They don't need someone telling them that "these are the ones!" because they may prefer a different brand for each colour.

Proper chuffed with this. First time using the Blue-tack and paper method of masking, made a cock-up on the pattern (I'll just say that the erks in the paint shop were drunk) but otherwise good. I'm starting to really enjoy the airbrush.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

That Meteor is looking good.
The painting booth also looks good and something i should buy. Can you share any details like dimensions, the booth's brand/model or maybe a link? TIA
