Quote from: sandiego89 on March 09, 2024, 04:40:25 AMI really don't "get" sci-fi as a WHIF.  Everything sci-fi is in technically a WHIF, but if someone models a known kit or draws something from a fictional show, book, etc. it really is not a WHIF.  Now if you strap two Saturn V's for a twin-Saturn (Saturn X?), that is a WHIF.

Not really as you can do that in Kerbal Space Program so I'm not sure if it's a whiff or not  :-\

Gondor

Two people can have the same idea. Kerbal is just an online box of Lego really, you can build pretty much anything with it.

I think sci fi is a little tricky.  I think you couldn't argue that building a kit of the USS Enterprise oob was a whif. Painting it purple or adding a second saucer would be though.  The waters muddy a bit when building your own interpretation of something that is less mainstream (i.e. from a book description or artwork), I'd argue it would count.

I take it you mean something like building your own interpretation of the submarine from "2,000 Leagues Under the Sea".

Gondor
Yes.

Mossie

That's a good example.  The book description of the Nautilus is quite different to the Disney movie.  Added to that, the Pegasus kit is somewhere between the two.

So anything you did yourself is a whiff, unless you build a kit of the movie sub, which is a direct representation of that version (but is a whif when compared to the book)!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Rick Lowe

I had the same quandary when I entered the Aoshima kit of the Mad Max coupe into a show: should it go in Sci-Fi, as a fictional movie vehicle? Or in Real World, as it was based on a real car and actually existed 'in the metal'?

I can't recall where it ended up, but it placed 3rd (out of a total of 3 entries...) so I was happy.

Totally agree Mossie
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Weaver

Example of sci-fi whiffs: I have two old MPC Millennium Falcons here, one built by me and one by my schoolfreind.

His Falcon is physically pretty much OOB and painted weathered grey, but it has dozens of real-world national flags around the edge of the saucer, implying that it's done a publicity tour of the Earth.

Mine (never finished) was short-shot so I didn't have the option of doing it OOB. It has a lot of extra greeblies to both improve the detail and cover the short-shot holes, and the lower turret is converted to a shuttlecraft. It's also painted gunmetal, which makes it much darker than the original.

You could also argue that the book Moonraker was published in the 1950s, the film was released in 1979 years before NASA's Space Shuttle Programme.

See there's an idea: the original plot of the Moonraker novel was wildly different from the film, so you could build something based on the question "what if the film had followed the book closely?"

The same is true of many James Bond books and movies.

Moonraker (novel) has, IIRC a car chase through the Kentish countryside with Bond Driving his Bentley.

Quick questions, is that a suggestion for a possible GB ?

Yes it is. I don't mind if my suggestions are integrated with others or dissected for simplicity.

I didn't intend it that way, but yes, it could be a GB idea (different from the James Bond GB) which applies to any movie based on a book.

I can't remember if something like this was suggested or actually done in the past, but how about a "War in the Arctic and/or Antarctica" group build?
You don't hear about it very often in the news, but I've seen articles that Russia is trying to make aggressive grabs in the Arctic and is even placing missile defenses near some of it's northernmost outposts and research bases.
The Arctic and Antarctica are vast unexplored areas of land. Who knows what valuable resources there could be for exploitation with various nations fighting over them?
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Call it the "Polar War GB" then both ends are covered.
