Gondor

Life is getting in the way of any building at the moment. Bought a new printer as the old one was playing up and the A3 paper feed was a pain in the &$$ as it was from the rear  :o

This one is basically a small office printer, it can even send faxes if I want. It has two trays for paper, which is great, as I can extend either of them to take A3 paper so no feeding it in from the rear! The printer also has the highest DPI that I could get, just in case I learn how to do artwork for printing my own decals.

One problem with the old printer was that as it was in a different room I had to use the Wi-Fi and I was never happy doing this as I always seemed to have to reconnect the printer either to the computer or the Wi-fi, with the new one in the same room it's now permanently connected to the router so no connection problems at all.

I have been letting my brain have silly ideas. I received a 1/72 Chipmunk today which I intend to enter for the current 1960's group build and I also have an idea for another de Havilland product as well. I still have to work out some of the ideas for the backstory for that though before I am happy enough to look at getting the model.

I wonder how many people can receive faxes nowadays ? Certainly takes me back 30 years or so when they were the principal way of getting and receiving information like tables and reports to people quickly.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

One of my printers could still accept faxes, but I cancelled my 2nd phone line when I retired.

Even before the age of the fax I had a teleprinter in my front room in Derby as the European Head Office of my employers always used telexes rather than
phone calls to ensure there was a printed record of everything that happened.

I wonder if my neighbours thought it was such a good idea, as the racket it made could wake the dead sometimes!  :o

The main thing I remember about telexes back in the day was the girl who worked in the Telex Room

I wonder if with my Fiber to the flat, if I can connect the printer and still get my full internet connection and phone too?

Never answer faxes! They were sent from the sphere of death...  ;)

Faxes  ALWAYS ran out of paper half way through a message................and since ot was thermal print paper, the text faded considerably after a year or so and was of little practical use.

The other thing I remember about telexes was the hydraulic delivery system that ran through all the offices. You sent a message to the telex room via it and received any telexes via it. It also got used for other things

Gondor

I would say you should. The fiber should terminate in a box where the signals are converted from light into electricity, and to which you can connect the phone and the router separately, most likely via LAN cables. Then you can connect the printer and the computer to the router, either via bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LAN cable.

Hydraulic? Not pneumatic?

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

PR19_Kit

In JMN mode, it was more likely pneumatic rather than hydraulic. They'd have got VERY oily of it was hydraulic.  ;D

The pneumatic tubes were used in several shops in my youth   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumatic_tube.     I can just remember a wire system  and my mum told me many many years ago about a rolling ball set up  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cash_carrier

If you go to Beamish and ask nicely the staff in the Co-op store will show you how the Lamson rolling ball works. It's fun to watch!

A lot of businesses still use them. When I was doing the courier work, the businesses that weren't using them often had issues with having stuff ready for me, because nobody had got around to checking the e-mails. But the fax machine printed out the order as soon as the client sent it, and got their attention with the printer noise and the paper sliding out. Few things more frustrating than fighting through traffic for half an hour to get to a warehouse, only to find that they weren't even aware that I was on my way, and then wait another 15 or 20 minutes to have them confirm it, pick the piece, package it, etc.

And a few places still use dot matrix printers, because they are the only type that can do carbon copies. An Air Canada waybill has 4 pages, if I recall correctly, and a dot matrix will smash the info all the way through to the last one.

Lamson tubes.  The Chronicle was using them to send the negatives from Creative down to the plate room until about 2004 when we went direct to plate.

One of the local stores in Sterling had pneumatic tubes to send cash etc around the store, very fascinating when you're a pre-pubescent teenager. One of the local supermarkets also had a limited pneumatic system as well.
