Not aware of that popular belief... the underside is regular flat black and most of the models i've seen had flat black underside, right behind the cockpit on the side of the fuselage and all along the tail... the engine's exhaust (IR? ) cover is also black. I guess it was supposed to represent carbon fiber or other composite material.

1:48 RAH-66 kits seem to be difficult to find.  I'm interested in building one myself, but everywhere I looked they were out of stock or otherwise unavailable.  Interesting idea though.  Wonder what you'd do with the stub wings.

Forgive me if this is out of line, but suggesting colours for a modern Blue Thunder that aren't blue seems a tad counterproductive

Not to say Heretical?  ;)

Besides which, it's called 'Blue Thunder' for a reason... ;D

To be fair the idea of an in-service example is very exciting as a model concept. But to me the idea works best as a nocturnal operation, hence the colour.

Yeah, during WW2 they found black actually stood out at night, whereas grey was a bit less noticeable... blue is presumably the same.

I've been looking for one for literally years, and they're like rocking horse poo to get hold of. I've scoured 2nd hand stands at model shows, looked on EBay, and all the UK second-hand reseller model sites... nothing to be found.
Even ended up exchanging an angry email with a sales site at one point, as they had it listed as in stock and available, and then emailed me to say it was a mistake on their system.

I'm a big fan of the USMC camo idea. We need more BT kits so we can do these!! I still want to do the stocker in 1/48 with the Aoshima kit.

Sorry to do this, folks. But I'm ditching the idea for a Blue Thunder police style helicopter for my RAH-66 Comanche model.
I thought it might be a nice idea. But now I'm not so sure anymore.
So I'm trying to think of other whiffy ideas for this bird.
When I finally figure something out, then I'll let everyone know.
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Still not sure what this 1/72 scale Comanche will be, but here's a few in progress pics.
This will just be a mediocre quick build. Nothing fancy.

I do wonder what you get if you crossed one of these with a V22 Osprey but instead of propellers on the wings...jets engines.
The only problem I can think of right now is the size..the V22 isn't that small in 72nd where as the Comache is .
Something like that anyway  ;D
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

Maybe something similar to these two examples? Pictures that I found on Facebook. Modelers unknown.

@Wardukw:
I do have a 1/72 V-22 Osprey kit. But I'm not willing to kitbash that with parts from a helicopter. I'm using my V-22 for a different proposed project here:
