An article just popped up on CNN today discussing the Canadian CF-105 Avro Arrow aircraft.

Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

It might be a toss up between which cancelled program has generated more groans and sour grapes among enthusiasts, and articles over the years:

CF-105 Arrow
B-70 Valkyrie
BAC TSR-2

Honorable mention, Boeing 2707 SST

While all were elegant, a more nuanced review might conclude all were one trick ponies, prone to high costs and technical issues.

Pretty good article, I thought.

Good list from sandiego89, although with all due respect I'd probably not consider the B2707 - simply because it never flew.

Maybe we should get Chris to set up a poll to decide which of the three that did fly is the most emotive subject 😈 and then have a GB to commemorate it 😉

We'd all need much larger shelves if we went for the XB-70! I still haven't had the nerve to build mine completely. :(
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

The point about it being cancelled at just the right time to maintain the myth is a very good one, and also applies to TSR.2. In both cases they'd got as far as building a sexy flying machine, but these were hollow shells, not operational aircraft. In both cases the avionics development programmes were nightmares that, had the projects continued, might have sunk either or purely technical grounds, leading to a lot more money going down the drain and a much less favourable public perception. In addition, the Arrow didn't even have it's intended engines yet, and they could have been another source of problems, just as the TSR.2's were.
