Quote from: PR19_Kit on July 12, 2024, 09:43:42 AMWhere are you headed for Dave? And is there a decent model shop anywhere near?

West Worthing, Kit.  And yes, Sussex Model Centre is a very good general purpose hobby shop - ask Chris and Colin (I think Colin's been there).

The Tangmere Aviation Museum is 30 or so minutes away.  Shoreham aerodrome and the prospect of a jolly in a Tiger Moth to the east, Goodwood and the prospect of a jolly in a Piper Cub to the west.

I could of course sell body parts to pay for a Spitfire flight out of Goodwood!

You and me both. Pooling..?  ;)
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

I think there'll be a lot of pooling if we both lose body parts!😉

A very nice part of the country Dave, I'm green with envy. Tangmere is a WONDERFUL Museum too, you can almost smell the nostalgia there.

Never been, but it looks good.

I had one of my 'Most Memorable Moments' there. I chatted to Neville Duke about flying WB188 during his World Speed Record Flight, and we were standing right in front of it at the time!

Shivers down the spine time for sure.

Very much so, and if proof was needed :- I was staying down that way with 4 of my old school mates a couple of years ago on one of our bi-annual jaunts and they decided that a short trip to the museum would be my "treat". They have no interest in aircraft at all, but in the end I couldn't get them out. They thought it was fantastic  ;D

The model shops a good one as well.

Saturday pre-move model packing threw up this blast from the past from exactly 50 years ago.  I remember it well - as a 16-year old air cadet I went as part of a school Combined Cadet Force outing there.  Train both ways (my first experience of the London Underground (Euston to Waterloo)) made for a very long day, but wow some great explosions, Canberras and helicopters whooshing about and the biggest anticlimax of all - an Honest John missile launch.

Oh, there was LOTS of flame and noise as it whizzed off the launch rails and disappeared across Salisbury Plain Danger Area only to end in a distant phtt.  OK there was a blast to be seen but we all expected lots of Hollywood flame and blast.

Needless to say the Honest John had a conventional warhead that day!

Item 34 on the programme looks interesting. "Audience Participation", I somehow have visions of a St Trinian's day out

The 'Noise Levels' instructions are interesting, in an historical perspective - these days Elf'n'Safety would have a fit and Demand! complimentary hearing protection for all...
or just disallow the whole thing on the basis that a Military is Unnecessary...   :banghead:

15 years before Dave's wonderful sounding Day Out, I was at Larkhill too. At the time I was a cadet BSM in charge of the Artillery Section of my school's CCF, and we had a real live 25 pounder to play (Drill....) with, and paint, which we did continuously! I found the gun still had a valid barrel certificate, and persuaded my CO, who handily happened to be my form master at the time too, to let us go down to Larkhill and actually fire it!

With the generous help of the Oxford Uni OTC we did just that, and the 'Real Army' crew down there couldn't have been more helpful, doing the initial blank firing and live firing with a loooooooong lanyard before letting me fire the thing at a target tank waaaay over the plain, open sights, APDS round.

We spent quite a time firing it that day, and at NO time did anyone ever suggest that we used earplugs or any other form of eat protection!  :o  :o

Maybe just one reason why I use two hearing aids these days................

No.  Thats solely due to the Rotodyne... ;)

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Yeah, you could well be right there Fred, it predated the 25 pounder shooting by a year or two.
