Question: What color is a US ammo can?

Ken they are Olive Drab ..some are a slightly darker version of OD but 90% of the ones ivr used have all been a standard OD .

While passing the Big H y'day, I took a right turn and dropped in on their MONSTER warehouse, as you do.

When I came out I found I was clutching a 1/72 Academy Martin PBM-5A Mariner, and a veritable monster it is too, LOADS larger than a Catalina.

As I already have a Rareplanes vacform od the same aircraft I have plan to combine the two, and I DON'T mean a Zwilling version either.

Caustic soda solution dissolves "chrome" very quickly and will also remove the underlying lacquer eventually.  Oven cleaner which contains caustic soda will do the same.

I have one of the Academy  Mariners too, very nice kit it is too. I am thinking of swapping its engines for a pair of Griffon's from a Shackleton, and having it in service post war as rescue aircraft for the RAF. I will need to get looking for suitable 1950's rescue decals.

I'm not sure the RAF had special rescue markings post-WWII, apart from on the ASR boats of course. The only candidate would have been the Shackleton and they only came in all over silver post WWII.

Of course, this being WhiffWorld, there's nothing to prevent you INVENTING such a scheme, is there?

I've got a Hasegawa Marlin in the stash and keep looking at the Academy Mariner so it doesn't get lonely  I hesitate though due to the size...

One might consider using RNLI  colours  (dark blue with high-vis orange topsides  as    an aircraft seconded to that venerable and gallant organisation  But would the resultant machine have to be self-righting, as is most RNLI kit?

The Mariner sure is BIG, makes a Catalina look like a Slimming World 'After' pic!

The Marlin must be even larger, with that looooooong planing hull they fitted to it. I've always fancied a Marlin too, but the prices have legislated against one so far.

I made the mistake of selling my Hasegawa Marlin, and Shin maywa. I do like big flying boats, and now I have room to build them, they would look perfect hanging from the hobby room ceiling.

I'd forgotten the Shin Maywa, that's like a 4 engined amphibious Marlin, isn't it?

The RAF did operate 28 Mariners, but only for a few months: introduced Oct '43, withdrawn Dec '43!

Doesn't interfere with most whiff ideas of course, but it does mean that the standard RAF WWII colour scheme of EDSG+DSG-cammo-over-white isn't a whiff in and of itself.
EDIT - just realised something: the RAF Mariners were PBM-3 pure flying boats, but the Academy kit is a PBM-5A amphibian, so putting that in RAF cammo-over-white would be a whiff, and quite a subtle, sneaky one too...

Not a bad idea actually. Mikro Mir does a decent Beverly  in 1/144. Think I might need to acquire a couple.
