Somebody accidentally gave me the idea for this while talking on Facebook. Kinda got the idea to kitbash an SR-71 with Star Trek warp nacelles. Take the regular SR-71 engines off and replace them with warp nacelles. Maybe develop it into an advanced Starfleet fighter or something. What do you guys think?
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

I'm going to go with a YES on that idea.

or perhaps I should say, "Make it so"   ;D

There was a Star Trek Novel that Featured an SR-71 with Nacelles like that! the Title was Traitor Winds! Google if You want to see if it's What You were Thinking of,OK? Dan

I am not certain, but I remember having seen a SF-modded SR-71. Was something with the engines, too, but I am not sure if it was Star Trek?

Nice idea, anyway, and the light finish should look interesting, too. Curious to see the result!

You gotta go Nike & Jean-Luc Picard on that idea!

This is the only image I could find. Just an image of the craft on the cover of the book. Supposedly, it's called a Wraith class shuttle. Kind of odd that the artist who did the cover of the book used the SR-71 as a basis for the shuttle? You'd at least think Starfleet would use something a little more advanced than a 20th century flying craft.  ;D  Anyway, if and when I do build the model, I'm not sure if I'll build it exactly as shown on the book cover, or make it a little more advanced with different warp nacelles, etc.

Do it!!! Would be a perfect entry for the on-going Sci Fi Group Build.

Great idea. .. . .

Can I get a Mod or Admin to move this topic to the Sci-Fi sub-forum in the Current & Finished forum, please? Thanks.

And I'm back at it with this idea/project, crazy as it may be.   Though I wonder who's the more crazier, me for building this weird craft or the artist who decided to use the SR-71 Blackbird on the cover of the book? The pictures below are pretty self explanatory. But if anybody has questions, then just ask. The Revell kit does come with a D-21 drone also, but I won't be using it. It was only in the kit if people were going to build the original M-12/D-21 combo.
I would have liked to add lighting to the engines, but I'm afraid I'm not experienced enough and don't know a lot about electronics. So no lighting. :(
Not much is known about this craft from the STAR TREK paperback novel, Traitor Winds. The book is extremely scarce on details. It's appearance is similar to that of the 20th century SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. The craft is known as the WRAITH class planetary surveillance stealth shuttle. It is primarily designed for covert surveillance of pre-First contact civilizations with a possible secondary role of covert surveillance of enemy Klingon and Romulan forces. It has no warp drive and has only short-range impulse engines for inter-solar system travel. It must be carried aboard larger vessels to be used from one star system or patrol area to another. And supposedly, it also has a cloaking device.
If I find out any other information about the craft, I'll let you know.

Will you paint it white like the TOS filming model Enterprise or light gray like it appeared on TV? Don't get people going about which is the "right" color!

It'll be a nice burgundy color with gold trim.  ;D   (Just kidding.)
Actually, it'll be black just like on the front cover of the book as well as whatever description there is of the craft in the book's pages.

But is it the correct shade of black?
The burgundy sounds interesting. Just say it has something to do with the small craft cloaking device.
There's always the B-52 with eight warp nacelles.....,
