First shot is a colourised photo of when dad joined up on 2nd September 1939 (always his mum's pride and joy) and the second was taken some time in 43/44 when he was on convoy duty between India and East/S Africa just before he went onto AAA training and then the BPF when it arrived. He's top left.

Yup lied about his age, he was 16. Apparently because both he and his mate volunteered 2 days before War was declared the RN treated them as regulars and once their true age was disovered "re-enlisted" them as boy sailors. Meant he got a few extra perks, but also meant it took longer to get demobbed at the end of it all.

The pair of them had actually run away to Oxford during the Munich Crisis the previous year and tried to jon the RAF, but his mum travelled up and dragged the pair of them back    Dad always said she did them a huge favour as they'd both volunteered for Bomber Command in the recruiting office and if they'd ended up as gunners or whatever it's very unlikely they'd of seen the War out. Means of course I'd not of been here either

The consequences of his mom's decision probably made the difference... the number of Bomber Command aircrew killed during the war... Good thing she went after him. 

Not all of them were killed.  He might have made it through.

Agree... Had a cousin who joined Bomber Command, trained as a pilot. He and a friend figured that the reason so many bombers were getting lost, was because when the navigator bought it, the aircraft got lost and was lost. So they trained as navigators in their own time.
When they qualified, they were told they could choose which Coastal Command squadron they wanted to join, because Bomber Command doctrine said pilots couldn't be navigators as well.
So he had a nice, boring war in East Africa with 490 squadron, which was good for the family he had after the war...

Work continues with the Zero. Fuselage and wings are together as sub-asssemblies and the cockpit tub just needs the Eduard seat belts finished and then that can be slotted into place and the wings attached.

Meanwhile I've started on the Azur - Fromm DB 7. First impressions are good. The plastic reminds me of that which Airfix used prior to switching over to the current "harder" stuff, so it's a little on the soft side, but there's no flash to speak of and initial test fits are encouraging    They've also tooled it so that there are positive aids to fitting things in the right place and initial construction of the cockpit has been quite easy, even if I did try and put something in back to front    Instructions could be clearer, Airfix's current approach is ideal in my view, but I think it will just mean crossing bits off as and when you've done them so as to avoid confusion. Not sure if this will be "real world" or a simple "paint job wif", but that can be left until a lot later.

Touching all the wood going, the mojo seems to have returned    The catalyst seems to have been putting the 162 and 410 to one side as they were draining me. The 162 down to kit issues, nothing serious but took time to sort out, and the 410 down to my cock-up.  I will return to them both at some point but not prior to Telford.

Meanwhile tinkering continues with both the Zero and the DB-7. The DB-7 is looking more likely to be joining the Dutch rather than French Air Force. So will be a paint wif.
