Quote from: Rheged on October 03, 2024, 01:39:32 PMExactly how does the charming young lady at the end of the video fit into Sweden's defence capabilities?

She, or rather someone a bit younger*, could inspire me to defend them quite easily.

[*: I say this because, at a guess, this was filmed in the 1960s or early-1970s, so the attractive young lady in the clip is likely to be in her 80s now, & I'm not quite that old. ;) ]

As can be seen >>HERE<<, today's been surprisingly productive and there's not much left of the physical build/restomod of the old Revell J35A. And good fun it's been too.
Next step will be to have a look at loadout. While the Rb74/AIM-4L is a rather efficient missile, the old Rb27/AIM-26B has a more coloured reputation, and also very short range indeed. Admittedly, the J35F/J PS-01 radar wasn't that long ranged either, and regardless of that, any radar limited by that narrow nose wouldn't be much better, but a) this is already a whif, and b) another missile could be cool regardless..
But as said elsewhere, there is an aesthetic dimension to this as well, and I'm not certain of the outcome of a such a trial.

Then, there's the scheme issue. IRL, only the J's got an air superiority scheme, and that came first around 1990. Hence, maybe the standard, murky olive green/dark blue over RLM Hellblau would be more realistic, but then again quite conspicuous already at some altitude. And then again again - these short tailed A's would in my application be designated low altitude interceptors, much like the Lightning F.2A's of nos 19 and 92 Sqn RAF and as far as I know, they never went grey. Then again, they converted to Phantoms already in 1976 and 1977, respectively, and the Phantoms that followed did go grey later on. And I don't know whether these sqns were retasked to a more general air intercept mission when flying the F-4's.
Choices, choices..

Another thing that's nearing its end is this Friday, so I'd better cap things and get to bed while I'm in a flow.

Interesting video. You can tell it was a 60's/70's video by the tone of the voice and the background music regardless of the language used.

A very valid observation indeed,  :thumbsup:

As it happens, I stumbled on a few pics of the very early trials camouflage that Revell has chosen for their box art.

It is using the same hues as the later blue/green Draken camouflage, but the undersides are not light blue grey but rather unpainted, but for the nose where the camouflage colours are continuing around the airframe.

Interestingly, the demarcation line is a continuation of the outer wing sweep, giving quite a nice graphic effect. It's even more evident in a picture taken directly from below.

No, mine isn't going to look like that, but I thought it was much too cool not to show.

That looks really good, and worth using on other types too maybe? I'm imagining it used on a Viggen or a Lansen.

Someone better inform Commander Straker that they're over Sweden. :wacko:

At that time, these had repainted in the standard Draken scheme for about a decade.. 😉

Looks quite a lot like a Northrop Grumman X-47B UCAS (Unmanned Combat Aerial System);

Or, maybe, a bit more like the Lockheed Martin offering for the MQ-25 Stingray CBARS (Carrier-Based Aerial-Refueling System);

Only decades before they were even a spark in an aeronautical engineer's dreams.

Deported to Helsinki/Finland (sorry, Pertti) for the rest of the week, the Revell Draken rebuild will have to sit idle for a bit. That's annoying as my mojo levels have been on an all time high since I got filing away on those wing tips. But here I am, holed up in a depressingly furnished hotel room in central Helsinki, trying desperately not to notice the outright awful hints at "luxury", mainly expressing themselves through fake darkwood and gold tinted mirrors in the minibar. Also, the sitting chair is a modernistic low back piece and not the cuddle-yourself-up chair you really would have liked here next to bleeding Soviet..

On the upside, the minibar includes teabags (for free!) and a kettle, so there is a mug of hot tea steaming away here, and I have a book to keep me company once I've sifted through this forum. So I guess it could be worse.

Still longing back to that Draken, though. Good fun, it was..  :wub:

Tea and a Good Read - and the sympathy from your fellow-forumites - can comfort a lot of issues away.

And the Draken will still be there when you return. :thumbsup:

Old Wombat

Just nurture that mojo in a little corner of your soul until you get back home. :thumbsup:
