Always the way - you find the perfect reference, or find you had it already, when you are past the stage of needing it... don't ask, etc :banghead:

Gondor

Talking about that reference, I am now going to add an extra detail or two to the model. From the drawings I can work out where the exhaust for the radiator would be, I can then make a sloping recess towards the hinged end from the rear that I can slot a door into so that it is slightly open, to quote Uhura "Well the things got to have a tailpipe."

So a few hours later after finding out that the drawings scale to 1/84 rather than 1/72 I have a recess.

And a flap for it

Which is now getting sides added to it.

The forward end of the flap has no sides as that is the hinged end, I may need to reduce the height of the forward end after I have trimmed off the excess, but we shall see. Black paint at the hinge end and the aircraft interior colour towards the outlet I think. Aircraft recognition light positions are marked and need to be drilled out which once painted will get a coat of either varnish or PVA.

I trimmed off the excess square rod and tried it in place to see if it had the visual effect that I wanted.

Yup, that passes muster as a start. Viewed from the side there is enough wall for the effect. Next up thinning down the part.

I think that looks good enough for now. I had to replace one of the rods as it was angled inwards, the other one has been thinned. I'm pretty sure that the rod I am using is 0.010" x 0.020" where 0.010" x 0.010" would have been better but I don't have any in stock and neither Evergreen nor Slaters have that size listed unfortunately.

I have also realised that the interior should be aluminium rather than interior green.

I added a little paint.

It's going to need another coat but that's not too much of a problem.

You can see the recesses for the identification lights in front of the radiator intake. Colours will be as they should be, from front to rear, Red, Green and Amber.

So after a bit more paint, it looks like this.....

The Blue has been given a second coat, the main wheels have been glued on too. I have given a coat of Grey to the canopy framing as the Aluminum seems to like something to stick onto other than just plastic. I am hoping to get the painting finished tomorrow and then it's varnish and decal time!

It's been almost a week since I updated this build. Not much has been happening as I have had too many other things going on. I managed to complete a few things this afternoon.

First up I have been creating a workaround for a problem of my own making.

I had decided to make dimples for the identification lights. I had made a nice neat row of all three of them as well

The problem was that they were not along the centreline  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

So out with the 0.005" plastic card, although it could be 0.010", difficult to tell at that size which one it is. Prity thin anyway. The first order of business was to create two straight edges at right angles to each other, next was to cut a rectangle that was a scale 3/4' by 1 1/2'. I drew a centre line and then marked halfway along it. I found the smallest circle on the template I have and drew that in the centre, marked the halfway point between the ends of the card and the circle and drew two more circles. So far so good. Out with some punches and out came the centres of each circle. I have used superglue to fill in the dimples on the model. Later this evening I will glue the patch in place and in line with the centreline of the aircraft.

I have also stuck the radiator exhaust in place.

It looks ok, not brilliant, but I don't build museum pieces. So here is a pic of it from the side.

That turned out just as I wanted it. Quite chuffed with the effect  ;D

I also found the canopy for the other MB.5 today. That will wait until after Telford to be completed, way too much work for me to finish it in time now.

Which is the main, no, only criteria you need to satisfy.
Good result and neat, quick work around. Particularly as they could well have had their own removeable panel for maintenance.

I have just glued the patch onto the lower fuselage. Tomorrow I will paint it and the day after I shall add colour into the recesses.

I am calling the construction done! There are a couple of parts that should go on, but when one of them flys off into the blue yonder, I did hear it land but have no idea where, so the build has no retraction jacks fitted. Other than that though, just a few touch ups, varnish decals etc.

The exhaust are aftermarket items and are 1000% better than what is supplied in the box, the wheels are from an AZ Tempest kit as I wanted the tread patern on them, I also thought they were a bit crisper than the kit ones.
